I think it's disgraceful really, her ideas are clearly intolerant and totally unacceptable in modern society, but what I think it worst is that the people of Queensland elected her. Hopefully this will blow over and shell fade into the shadows.

As long as there are stupid people, stupid people will be elected. Which would be okay, if it wasn't for all the damage they do. :(

But seriously, since she went on "Dancing with the Stars" no one can take her seriously. Surely?

Sadly, I think that'll HELP her more than hinder her :(

I can't believe people agree with her... Actually, I don't understand how she can hold those views in the first place.

I'd vote for her. She's the only politician in Australia who has something resembling common sense.

Firstly I'd like to comment on what a load of crap her speech is about.

For crying out loud! How Racist can you get?
The Problem with people like her, is that first, its "lets just stop the stream of them into our nation," but shortly after it becomes:
*fierce music*
"People of Australia!
These Africans are polluting our world!
They are not equal to us! And must die!"

I feel sorry for those who vote for her and hope that someday they end up in jail, or the mental Asylum that they belong in.
What on earth is wrong with immigrants anyway?
Australia needs them and the skills they supply for us.

I will most certainly not vote for her, but I'm OK with racist policies being championed by a clown.
I disagree that any viewpoint, any policy, is so offensive that it cannot be advocated.

And this, above all: the racist constituency exists in the Australian electorate, so it should be represented by a racist, not by one of the major parties using coded campaigning. I'd rather have Pauline as one Independant than another Tampa Incident.

Oh, and even if she gets the seat (on a flying pig), and even if she gets the balance of power (it'll be ALP by five to ten seats) ... what use is the balance of power when both the major parties hate your guts and fear being associated with you? You get to choose, but not to bargain.

I definatelly agree with you there. Imagine what would happen if Howard turned that racist.

Note the "that," because I still believe he is racist. Though not quite as much as she is.

Remember a few years ago when Pauline filmed that "If you're watching this video, then I am dead." thing? What an idiot. I wish she'd just piss off.

Grrrrr... I thought she's up and died last year, someone said something about it. My reaction was "Sweet, world's a better place. What's for dinner?"

And now she's coming back into politics? Oh well, best of luck to her, but chances are she'll get murdered in the vote, especially since the riots. Oh, and neither party will give her their preferences.

So while it sucks, I'm not worried.

That's the glory of free speech. If those are her viewpoints, fine. If people perceive there is an immigration problem, fine. And if this means that a population of a nation decides that it wants to be more stringent on who is let into their nation and for what reasons, that is their decision. Also, there are extenuating situations in Australia that sort of help people like her along... like the Sydney imam Hilali comparing white Australian women to dead meat that attracts cats and memories of the Cronulla riots (Middle Eastern on white violence). To be fair, point out both sides of the situations and realize that not every country likes to be "progressive" and "forward" in their immigration policy and that is their right as a nation. The only reason any outsiders have the right to be involved is when there is actual physical violence against a group; so far the majority of the violence is not against the native population...

You have to give her, at least, some credit for this:
Asked why she wanted to return to politics, the former federal MP for the Queensland seat of Oxley said "Why not".
If only more politicians were willing to just come right out and admit that much. It reminds me of that guy the Daily Show interviewed, who was running for Senator on the platform that primarily consisted of "I am legally able to run for the office, I have $1,000 to spend, and there's some time on my hands."

Otherwise, her political views don't really bother me because she's an Australian anyway, and everyone knows that foriegners were invented by JFK for the exclusive purpose of amusing Americans.

... ugh. Most horrible politician in the country. Good old Latham or even Howard are better. Oh well, I suppose we're going the American way of getting back our loud and angry minority who says 'ph3ar teh brown peoplez!!' incessantly.
I love it when people talk about 'Australian values'. To me, typical Australian values represent having frequent BBQs, drinking large amounts of alcohol and driving utes. :p

Ah good old White Australia. Maybe my memory is playing tricks, but IIRC, Australia's Ku Klux Klan branches (definately not my imagination) are the only ones outside the US. What exactly that says about Australia I am not sure. (And please don't take that the wrong way, my antipodian friends - I am still a fair dinkum Aussiphile, warts and all.)

That's because it's made up.

It's not made up in the sense that it's nonsensical, but rather in the sense that it's a non-natural conlang.

She's making Horward look good by comparison, and that can't be a good thing.

I think maybe an answer can be found in the similar history of both the USA and Australia. Both were founded and treated as "white man's colonies" for ever so long. Parts of it have stuck in both societies.

At least, that's my theory. Europe has shown itself to possess an unhealthy amount of xenophobia too, of course.
