So recently, a friend of mine found out where I live. Of course, I'm in the phonebook under a very rare (Only one in the phonebook for my City) last name. However that's not how she got it.

She knows my cat.

Or rather, she works at the Cat Shelter where I got my beautiful kitty, and recognised the name of my cat, a brief glance found all my details, Name, Age, Address, Basically everything there is to know about me. And it got me thinking, where else are my details, and how easy is it for someone to find out about me via obscure means.

Now I'm expecting this thread to die, fast, But people on NSG seem to love Big Brother consipiracy theories, so yeah.

Has anyone found out anything about you via such interesting methods? What did they find out and how? (Forgive me, I try not to make pointless threads, but it's been so long :) )

That was you?! I thought that was me!

Damn Google - it's lies I tell you!

As for my details... *shrug* I try to avoid people who'd use them for unsavoury purposes, so I'm not toop fussed :) Can't say anyone's ever found them in strange ways though. Probably a good thing I suppose.

Under the name my school and government know me as, There are two (2) pages. One is school saying I got an award a few years back. The other is my own, saying what I like to do.

Under the name people know me as, there is nothing (I have very rare names as you probably know from a different thread)

2 years ago, i searched my name and found some really obscure school newspaper article that i was quoted in, but that disappeared.

Just as a random thought that pertained to the theatre class I'm taking right now in college, there's a fascinating "modern play" by the name of Super_Vision.

It's a look at the lives of a family through surveillance companies and protection agencies. It's really quite amazing how much information an airport can gain about you based on your passport and fingerprint. A play meant to make you wonder where the line between protection and privacy has to be drawn.

As for a search on my name:
Apparently, I am a wrestler in college.
After some wrestling, I then went on to create "mind bending, brooding music"
After which, I started playing on Cash 4 Life to fritter my makings away on gambling.

Story of my life, and yet, not :P

Does the play have some of it projected onto sheets or board in the background (Or not really background if you know what I mean) If so, I've heard good things about it.

My name's reasonably generic, so googling it gets quite a few different responses.

I'm myself, and a bluegrass singer in his 50s from kentucky. there's also an elderly british gentleman, too.

on government websites you can look up voter registration information fairly easily, and from there you can get all sorts of goodies. my friend once showed me exactly how far you can go from just facebook information, it was a bit scary.

*confession* heh, last year when I was first coming to college, they gave me my future room-mate's name and phone number. from there I got his address, most of his academic interests, a blog I think, and several other interesting tidbits. it was tempting to show up on his doorstep and say hello, but I thought that might have been creepy.

Simply googling my name, one would find my age, occupation and phone number. More detailed search (surfing through all search results) gets my home address, and some relatives.

Not too much, but yeah, it is not too hard to find something about anybody.

It's just soooooo easy to find out that sorta stuff.

I can find your IP, then go to a website that will tell me which company hosts that range, and where aboutis in which country you are. I can silently follow you on the net whereevr you go for as long as it takes to render your name, adress, and any amount of personal details, by both the trail and clues you drop. Be scared, noooo be carfull yeah!

Sometimes for fun/boredom I've seen exactly how much I can extrapolate from what NSers mention. Among other things, I've found that a very simple search through pretty much anything (except the most secure of services, i.e. VPN run) requiring an email address can be convinced to give up said address, which can then be plugged into a reverse email search to return the name and IP it is registered to. From that, even if it isn't the real name, one can get the telephone number, address, and hence criminal record, voter registration details, yearly income, marital status, social security number, PIN, and the like. I didn't go that far because a) I'm frankly not that interested and b) it would take too much time and probably be illegal, but I could have. (If I lived in the general vicinity of some NSers I could conceivably show up at their houses, but that would probably be a bit too creepy.)

If I gave people on the internet my e-mail or real name, they could find all of this information and more; I'm even doubtful about giving out my age, pictures of myself, or similar information because if someone has succeeded in dragging out my email and performing the resulting name search it could narrow down the results a fair bit. I also use an email address with a false name specifically created for online services such as this, MSN Messenger, purchases and the like.

Do you feel paranoid now? You should. Unless you think you don't have that much of an identity to steal, in which case, good luck. :p

I find people for a living.

You will generally give the library, local pizza/chinese/video rental stores your correct phone # because you need something from them.
You dont know I'll be using that to find you.

Car dealers,Jiffy Lube type places. Any store they ask your # at the register. And then an equally disinterested 22 yr old answers the phone when I call. They'll tell me your address of record, your work # and the last thing you bought there.

You fill out a credit app and list a personal reference-they arent calling that guy to see if you're a good person. I'm calling him years later. He'll tell me what I need to know about you one way or another.
If he claims he doesnt know how to reach you, but then calls you to tell you I called and gives you my number-you'll be curious and call me. Then I'll have your #. If its a land line,I find the address-if its a cel #,I get the billing address. We dont even have to speak-all you do is dial my # out of curiosity and listen to my info-less outgoing message.
Your mother will put me in touch with you even quicker, because after I speak to her, its like her mission to get my message to you. Then she;ll hound you til you tell her what I wanted.

Its endless. Everywhere you go, you leave some type of finger print.

Wow, first time I've made a thread, gone to bed, and it's been there in the morning.

If you got my Ip Address (Which is simple enough, I look up basic information about people for security purposes) you'd be able to find out what country I'm in, and who I get my internet from. That would be all.

I'm still proud it lasted this long :)

Uhh, constructive... I've probably given up enough information on the net to find where I live, but under enough names that are (seemingly) completely unrelated, it should provide a difficult enough task for anyone.

The only people I tink who could manage to track me down for something I've done online, are police, and they wouldn't bother, I haven't done anything bad enough.

A search for my name would be pretty useless, as I share my name with this überchristian self-help guy (We've also got a few athletes and painters to our name, but they're pretty irrelevant) who writes all these stupid articles about depression. Pisses me off to no end, but, too make matter worse, he got to Gmail before I did and reserved OUR name as HIS address.
Of all the fucking cheek.

Some days, I think about hunting down and killing everyone who comes up on a Google search for my name. THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE!

A PhD proffessor of Mathematics in Texas

MD of a company which does Construction, contemporary design and traditional craftsmanship methodology in all home improvement projects.
