okay, so I was thinking today about good vs evil and wrong and right and stuff and things and yeah.

anyway, how's about we play a game.

tell me 3 reasons you are evil (no fair telling why other people are evil, that's not nice) and 3 reasons you are good, I think maybe we can all even out.......you know if we get really good at rationalizing.

(I would use the terms naughty and nice per the season, but I know that would lead the thread into a really not nice direction)

Evil:

I have screwed people over for money
I have screwed people over just for fun
I have taken advantage of the ignorance of others, even if it didn't screw them over, just so I could get ahead

Good:
I'm really good to my family members (such a nice guy and a great dad)
I'm spending some time helping people at a rehab clinic (such a nice guy!)
I'm teaching people who are poor and uneducated how to read (such a nice guy!)

Are we talking hypothetical reasonings for evil behavior? If so most "evil" behavior is caused by a desire for power, or personal gratification regardless of expense to others. Some people only get gratification when someone else is suffering.

Being good is part of a social contract, we're social critters, more or less. By establishing a code of conduct individuals can get along much smoother. I treat others as I would like to be treated.

I am not evil, as this implies a religious basis to morality. I am, however good and bad.

I am good because I do what is in my interest. I am bad for the same reason.
I am good because I do what pleases me. Again I am bad for the same reason.
I am good because I do what pleases others. Once again this also makes me bad.

If you do anything at all you are going to be both good and bad, and if you do nothing that that too is both good and bad.

Guess what - the terms good and bad do not have clear referents and as such are meaningless.

I'm not evil. And neither am I good. I don't believe either exists.

But I do things I regret doing because I feel they are wrong, and I do things I'm proud of doing because I feel they are right.

Things I have done that were wrong :
Manipulated people by making them feel bad
Stolen from people
Lied to people and hurt their feelings

Things I have done that were right :
Working with youth groups
Being there for others, listening and advising, 24/7
Helping people out when I can

I am fast to judge. Generally, I am a very good judge of character, and almost always know what a person is about within 5 minutes of meeting them...but I never accept that I might be wrong about a person, and demand that they prove it, which is almost impossible (though, several people have done it)
I play with people sometimes. I'll create situations around people I dislike just to see how they react.

Good:
I care about people. I will do anything for those I love, be they family or friend.
I am generous. I give vast amounts of money and time (relative to what I have) both to charity and to friends
I am understanding. I do my best to help people through their problems in any way I can, even if it is just to listen.

Overall, if you are my friend, I am the best friend you will ever have. If you are my enemy, I am the worst enemy you will ever have.

In general, I do things that please me, and do not do things that do not please me. Therefore, while I may do things that help other people, it is because I get a pleasant sensation from it. I postulate that this reasoning can be used to explain any and all human behavior. Altruism is a myth.
