Rumsfeld successor: 'We're not winning war'

Well knock me down with a banjo, call me Susan and put a frog in my pants: we're NOT winning the war!

There's still plenty of gullible people out there who believed Rummy and his mates. This is part of ridding the US leadership from them and their baggage.

It would interesting to know how Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld and Bolton feel today about what they have done in Iraq and, as a consequence, throughout the entire Middle East. Are they upset about their own actions and omissions?

Are they consumed by what-ifs? What would have happened if we had done things differently? Do they find themselves reaching for the bottle when they spend too much time thinking about what has actually happened there? Does the discrepancy between theory and practice drive them to insanity?

Yes but he goes on to say:

Mr Gates implicitly criticised Mr Rumsfeld, saying the US had used too few troops in the 2003 Iraq invasion and that more effort should be invested in the hunt for Osama bin Laden, possibly including one senator's suggestion that the reward for the al-Qaida leader's capture should be constantly increased like a state lottery.

"A sort of terrorist 'Powerball'?" Mr Gates said. "I'm certainly open to that."

Just like Bush to appoint yet another person able to be totally terrifying and utterly comic within one quote.

So Iraq is a mess because not enough troops went in to begin with - terrifying thought.

Hey, you gotta be open to all options, I guess...:D

Seriously though, this thread is great because it gives me an opportunity to post all these neat news articles without having to start extra threads.

Wouldn't it be ironic if Al Queda operatives are the ones that turned in the Saddam's for the rewards and gave the cash to Binny?

On topic.........by Gates' acknowledgements, they actually make Bush look bad because Bush always backed Rummy and said that he was doing a good job. To suggest now that Rummy was a failure reflects on Bushs' poor decision making.

:D

This is a fantastic quote from that interview:

I'd assume that the president wasn't aware of the decision. You can't nominate public enemy number one and then scrap the resources that were chasing him.

Somes the whole business up really: Bush couldn't find his arse with his elbow. Or something.

I just like the idea of some TV show with the announcement at the beginning of every week being something like: "With no terrorists caught this week, it makes next week's draw a rollover! Don't forget to check out the website for terms and conditions on how to play!"

On topic.........by Gates' acknowledgements, they actually make Bush look bad because Bush always backed Rummy and said that he was doing a good job. To suggest now that Rummy was a failure reflects on Bushs' poor decision making.

Absolutely. Although the way that they'll spin it is that Rumsfeld was not competent and failed the President who had faith in him rather than that the whole administration was full of crap (technical term).

Sarcasm/saying that the war would be a success if the coalition had had more troops?
