I agree, even the free verison of AVG works better for me. But, I really like McAfee

Norton is a bloated program. Zone Labs Security Suite is my personal favorite.

*shrug* I've been running Norton Anti-Virus Corporate Edition on my computers for, oh, six years or so now, and never had a problem with viruses while using it. So I can't complain, but I really can't say if it's better or worse than other products out there.

Computer: Your security software is out of date....

Dilmom: Uh-oh

Computer: Would you like to spend the rest of your natural life trying to figure out how to upgrade it? Or would you prefer to let hackers steal your identity, drain your bank accounts, and destroy your hard drive?

Dilmom: I NEED MORE CHOICES!

That pretty much sums up my view on all of them.

I just wish the annual renewals weren't so freakin' expensive. It's almost 2/3 the price of the original software (in most cases).

Norton is bloatware.

Nod32 (http://www.eset.com/) is where it's at.

When it works, it's fine.

The 2005 Internet Security Suite completely screwed up my desktop to the point where I had to format the disk and reinstall everything. I'll NEVER use it again.

AVG is super, and free. With that, a good firewall, spyware killers, and a healthy dose of common sense you should be good to go.

My dad bought something like that and it makes the comp start time VERY SLOW. And he just loaded it on another comp and it refused to be comp-mates with Spybot. MY dad is very hard-headed though :(

AVG or Avast! are damn good free alternatives. Zone Labs buggers up my p2p capabilities, I find.

Kaspersky is quite cool as well, if you’re willing to pay or be naughty. Not that I, or anyone on or affiliated to this site would ever do such a thing.

Norton Anti-Virus 2003 went HAL-9000 on me. It decided to isolate and quarintine my copy of SVCHOST.exe. Thats one of the most important files to Windows. Basically my installation of Windows was screwed permanantly.

Unfortunately, without that last part no AV will protect you.

We use the symantec corporate edition in my department (for our students) it is fairly solid and offers a lot of local server support and the corporate client is light

Norton itself though is a bit more of a hog dont care for it all that much

Personally if I were running windows Zone labs has been hitting it hard latley I have seen some good things out of their AV

Depends on your location, somewhere like a dorm network which is one big lan, it is imperative

So imperative that my department purchased an unlimited license to symantec to cover our students free of charge

Mcafee is only decent if you use the enterprise with ePO.

I would change it out if I had the chance.....

I have a no symantec rule. Did some advice board for them and the CEO really turned me off. Add in the bloat factor and the fact nortan corrupted a couple OSes during an uninstall.....

I have been playing with Nod32 on an external machine. Not bad.....

Well we have a little over 10000 copies of SAV Corporate edition (10.1 +) out there right now under our support umbrella (about 3000 of them directly under my department)

We have yet to actually kill an OS with a corporate release

Sure sometimes install issues or removal issues but a fairly standard average (maybe 1 percent) and it is supported with the ability for us to have a local DNS redirected Symantic system update server.

Before this we used to rely on AVG for thoes that could not afford to purchase a full paid AV and we had not BAD luck but certainly more issues then currently

Man... I remember when Norton was the best there was... back when I even dumped MS-DOS to run their OS, NDOS. It was light, fast, and killed the hell out of anything that even thought about screwing with you.

Pity they decided to sit on their laurels. Much like ZoneLabs is in the process of doing, actually.

I currently like what Grisoft is putting out, but it's only a matter of time before I have to find another program. Which is a pity, really. It'd be nice if a company wouldn't start pushing out bloatware once they're popular.

Was not aware that Norton built their own OS...interesting...will have to look that up!

avast is pretty easy - especially when it just updates itself every day :) (though it does get creepy when i start hearing other computers in the office say "virus database has been updated" all one after the other  )

yeah, i like avast :)

I knew someone once that used to unplug her machine from the power at night because she (genuinely) thought that a hacker might (while the machine was switched off anyway) come up through the power lines and put a virus on her machine.

She also broke her machine and couldnt use it for 4 days. She had click-dragged the start menu to the right hand side of the screen so it was now vertical and couldn't work out what had happened.

I swear I am not making this up. I love a tall tale, but this one stands on its own merit.

I am a support person for a major U.S. telecommunications company and you would be surprised at the crazy stuff I hear on a daily basis.
I had a trainee with me the other day and he asked if we really get calls from people that use the cd tray as a cupholder and other "urban myths" regarding inept computer users.

The very first call I took with him listening in was from a guy that could not get his printer working...turns out he had not turned on the power to the printer :p

As for the OP I spend a lot of time un-installing Symantec products that are screwing up peoples machines.

I use AVG (http://free.grisoft.com) and I have for years without any problems.

Symantec's products have the nasty habit of leaving a load of thrash when they are uninstalled, which I find quite irritating. AVG Free is enough for the home user, and it's verified that major brands (McAffee, Kaspersky, AVG, Symantec, Panda) have a detection rate almost identical.

Actually Symantec Anti-virus corporate edition is fine, you gotta worry about the home edition.

And what they don't tell you is you can get virus definition upgrade for free and after you have spent 50 hours trying to stop it from being a piece of crap, you probably already uninstalled it and don't care any more.

I've never had a single problem with Norton. I have a slimmed-down corporate edition of just the antivirus, and it works just fine. No memory problems, no extra crap, no eating the system files. I really don't see why they package all that extra shit with the personal editions -- it's just obnoxious Microsoft-infested fluff.

How is that? Any edition I have used past NAV 03 the updaters (even the stand alones) check subscription status

Not in my experience ... used it for years found it to lag behind ... be rather annoying and would not touch windows system restore files

It took me like one minute longer to start my computer while using NAV. And I only had it for three months until they required me to buy it so I installed AVG instead. I think it's better because the computer runs faster and it updates itself every day. I haven't got a virus since i started using it.

I think that I currently run Norton, and have very few, although some, problems. Same with every other program I have ever tried. However I find that if you run Norton and MacAfee you will be virtually problem free.

... odd. One would expect the exact opposite, since anti-virus programs bite eachother.

I hate anti-virus programs! They are so illogical. if you see someone breaking into your house, you do not check whether he is on the list of police for burglars, you shoot him! Seeing the existance of custom-written or government-made virusses and trojans, I want a behavior based (preferably OSS) solution.

And then it turns out to be your daughter.
Most virusses do not do things that are abnormal. They copy files. They change files. They delete files. All completely normal.
Good anti-virus solutions scan for suspect coimbinations of those actions as well as checking the names, but perfect action-based security is very hard if you wish to be able to use your pc normally.

It works beautifully. However, when it screws up (which doesn't take much: a bad shutdown can sometimes make it do stupid things), it is worse than diarrhoea. I had to uninstall Norton totally because LiveUpdate updated one of the files and it didn't do what it was meant to do (i.e. update properly), and it caused my computer to restart every 3 minutes (2 if on the Internet).

Other than that, it has a powerful virus database and searching engine. However, it is bloated and easily loses out to AVG. Or, as I say, Firefox an a brain.
