Wrong answer! If something does not exist simply because you don't see it, then going blind would amount to the world ceasing to exist. Since the world exists and there are blind people, this isn't so and thus the premise is false.

So? You don't have to be. You are not seeing something, and by that reasoning assuming that thing does not exist. I have shown that this reasoning is false and thus your assumption is based more on faith. One could say you now have a religion whereby you have faith in the non-existence of the poll. :)

How do you know they are truly blind?

They seem to say so, and act so, and would have no reason to lie.

Yet, you used the same argument re: the blind man for whom the world does not exist. Ipso facto.

No, that's a different argument.

Posit One: The poll doesn't exist, because I don't see it. (Dinaverg's Theory of Self-Importance.)

Counter-argument: Sight alone doesn't guarantee existence, because a blind man knows the world exists even though he can't see it.

Your hypothesis that there might be a blind man who doesn't know the world exists is irrelevant since all it takes is one blind man who knows it does to show that visual confirmation is not required to know something exists.

To me, at least, it seems more relevant to ask you to prove anything else (including God . . . and how do you know I'm not?) exists.

Why would that be relevant?

Besides, I already won this argument, you just haven't admitted it yet

Oh, and I am not surprised you take offense, tho none was intended. Just another skirt around losing the argument, imo.

Seeing may be believing, but seeing is not the guaranteeor of universal existence. Your opinion that you won is not a valid disproof of this statement.

Maybe you're just a figment of his imagination.

Unlikely, as he's dead.

True enough, perhaps you have some fundamental difference that separates you from all blind people other than the fact that you have sight and they do not.

So if you smell smoke, but do not see it, do you believe there is no smoke?

Nah, it was one of those ultra-sonic things.

A computer-generated image. Easily faked. You can imagine the benefits of faking them, too - the doctors and government can charge you extra for having it done!

Your courter-argument is poorly stated. "Sight alone doesn't guarantee existance" is not what Dinaverg was claiming.

Dinaverg was saying that something does not exist on the basis that Dinaverg cannot see it. It follows from such reasoning that sight is the guaranteeor of existence.

That assumes that other people exist, and that the entire world (including us) isn't some product of his deranged imagination while he sits, strait-jacketed and drooling in a padded cell.
In which case, things in this world only exist so much as he imagines them to exist, and if he doesn't imagine any evidence of their existence, then they don't exist at all.

And I think the msot over-hyped threat was the threat that there would be a poll with this thread.

Dinaverg's exactly right on this one.

Greater Trostia incorrectly assumed that if the existence of a thing is contingent upon Dinaverg's being able to see it, then the existence of a thing is contingent on anyone's ability to see it, and that's a complete non sequiter.

Furthermore, later statement suggested the burden of proof lay with Dinaverg to disprove this entirely baseless assertion, but that is again untrue.

In fact, I would deem Dinaverg's statement unfalsifiable short of blinding Dinaverg.
