If a genie could grant you 3 wishes...

Congo--Kinshasa

...what would you wish for?

I would wish for:

1. The power to make the woman in my dreams fall in love with me (and only me) unconditionally and for all time

2. More wealth than the 50 richest people combined (I would give away at least 99.9% of it away, though)

3. Eternal youth for myself and my lady (so we would remain physically young until the day we died)

Talk about a philanthropist.

Me:

1. For everyone to be able to have food, shelter, water, all that good junk you need to survive, and to be able to develop an instant immunity to any disease.

2. For people to be unable to be violent towards one another apart from competition and sport, instead focusing all aggression and passion into figuring out new technology, create new works of art, things like that.

3. Set the djinni free. :D

I would wish for:

1. The power to make the woman in my dreams fall in love with me (and only me) unconditionally and for all time

Then how would you know when you meet her that she really does love you, and not just forced into it because of your wish?

2. More wealth than the 50 richest people combined (I would give away at least 99.9% of it away, though)
leaving aside the economic ramifications (inflation anyone?), why bother wishing for all that money if you're just going to give it away? Why not wish for better wealth distribution to begin with, or ppl to be more charitable/generous?

3. Eternal youth for myself and my lady (so we would remain physically young until the day we died)
But what if you contract a flesh-eating disease, or cancer, or are paralysed in an accident?

My three wishes (assuming we can't ask for more wishes:
1. To formulate and phrase my next two wishes in such a way that they cannot be interpreted in any other way except to explicitly - and implicitly - fulfill exactly what I wish for.

Next two wishes would be along these lines:
2. To always improve physically/mentally - any injury, disease or virus I recover from and develop immunity to. So bascially I become Wolverine, without the claws. Wait. I'd like the claws as well. What the hell, throw in the ability to fly while we're at it.
3. A spaceship capable of taking me anywhere in the galaxy (see, I'm not greedy - I said galaxy, not Universe), and to do so within a decent time limit than the average human would find suitable.

You do know that theese things always turn around and bite you in the A**
such as:

1. (The power to make the woman in my dreams fall in love with me (and only me) unconditionally and for all time)
She will get fat and ugly will be so clingy and jealous that you will not get any peace.

2. (More wealth than the 50 richest people combined (I would give away at least 99.9% of it away, though))
Now you will more clingy people than any one can stand that just want a little of that money (and they truthfully belive that you owe it to them)

3. (Eternal youth for myself and my lady (so we would remain physically young until the day we died))

See numbers 1 and 2

For me I want the usual cliché list
1 Peace in the world (without removing humans)

2 An end to hunger (without removing humans)

3 (the greedy one) To always have enough money in my pocket to pay for what I am getting.

I'm not sure what my wishes would be... except, possibly, that everyone in the world finds love enough to satisfy.

Then how would you know when you meet her that she really does love you, and not just forced into it because of your wish?

The lady I'm thinking of is my friend with benefits. She says she "likes" me but doesn't love me, and only wants to be friends (though I'm hoping I can change that...).

leaving aside the economic ramifications (inflation anyone?), why bother wishing for all that money if you're just going to give it away? Why not wish for better wealth distribution to begin with, or ppl to be more charitable/generous?

That would work. Consider that my second wish.

But what if you contract a flesh-eating disease, or cancer, or are paralysed in an accident?

Edit to "physically remaining my current age but with complete immunity to injury and disease, so that the only thing that can kill me is old age."

That's four wishes. The genie ignores the second half of your second wish (though even if it didn't, the infinite expansion of the earth would mean gravity would approach infinite and it'd collapse into a black hole.)

1. I would wish for instant cognition. That I could just touch a book and instantly have it in my memory as though I'd read it. This wish made with the direct ability to either store that memory in its entirety or to remove it in its entirety at a conscious decision.

2. I would wish for the ability to teleport. That I could go anywhere I had seen enough of to make the conscious decision to go exactly where I wanted to go. This process would be instantaneous. Or even locations by someone you knew, i.e. "Where my friend is".

3. I would wish for the ability to manipulate odds. That if I was in a position to affect the odds of a probability I was directly involved in, I could alter the chances of it happening. If you've heard of Domino from Marvel Comics, essentially, I'm asking for that.

Yep. Selfish, but not boring.

Soon run out of room if everyone became immortal. We'd be metres deep in people the globe over within just a few decades!

As for the choose to die wish - how would they go about wishing it? saying "I wish I were dead" would wipe out the human race within months, if not weeks!

Since no-one could challenge your rule, there'd be no incentive to do anything. So everyone would just stop listening to you after a while.

2)Regular rains of Mana From Heaven(TM), a food which not only tastes awesome, but requires no preparation(aside from shaking the dirt off it), a small amount contains all your nutritional needs, and acts as a cure to all ailments, known and unknown.

The one wish I would always pick would be 'exact change' ... the presence of exactly the monetary value of that which I wanted to spend the moment I reached in my purse to retrieve it. Could probably be easier on a card nowadays, but that one I figured out when I was really little and read my first genie-wish story. This is, unfortunately, rather selfish so I'd have to live with that, but this way I can keep myself and my family and my children adequately provided for.

I'll steal some of the other peoples here, cause they've been good.

I like the manna from heaven one, fully nutritional, curing diseases, free food for all. There comes problems with that, however... overcrowding of earth by the animals leads to killing for sport and waste, the loss of jobs from the food business - both making and selling - would be enormous, we'd have to find something for everyone to do. While us humans would be healthy and fit - the enjoyment that one gets from eating a juicy watermelon or a perfectly cooked rack of ribs is different and would be entirely gone from life, (while this manna would taste amazing, where's the variety in texture and flavor and moisture and etc?) and I don't like taking out the nice things... but on the other hand it would solve hunger and disease/illness so it may or may not be a fair tradeoff, even if it does take everyone in the medical service out of employment as well... hmmm, maybe this one isn't so great after all.

An end to willful ignorance and instant cognition can be combined to make everyone in the world instantly cognant (??) so that when they have the opportunity to be contacted by ideas or media they understand it completely. The ability to understand and the ability to form their own opinions would not be intertwined, however, so this would not be worldwide brainwashing or instant genius and solving of all the problems of the universe, just non-biased comprehension, which is good... yes, this is wish number two.

For wish number three... I like the teleporting one. I would wish for a way for people (and objects and animals) to be able to teleport. I'm not willing to wish away any aspect of free will, so I'll not keep people from being murderers or rapists which means we can't allow people the freedom to go anywhere all the time, there'd have to be public and private areas of transport, with the private ones (such as homes or schools) needing approval by a reciever on the other side (or a dna type code for your own house, type thing), while anyone could pop over to the main square in New York or London or Beijing if they felt like they wanted to travel to be a tourist.

Hopefully the higher level of understanding from wish two would allow people to communicate and live in a more peaceful and productive manner, as well as provide complete comprehension when it comes to exercise, food, economy, etc. If you were a jerk, it'd be out of choice and not ignorance, and I think the knowledge that one is acting like a complete ass and the understanding of how others feel because of it will keep many from doing so. Wish number three is basically so people can see the world, experience things outside of their home city and see their relatives... as well as help those in natural disasters or crisis situations. We can't get rid of all of these things without running into free will problems or massive amounts of overcrowding, but we can minimize the suffering.

Hmmmmm maybe a good wish could be the ability to colonize other planets, so we don't have overcrowding problems.

I thought it was a good idea too! Just too many bumps in it to make it officially onto a wish list. If there's perfect free food no one is going to pay to eat something different, and that just leads to loads of issues. When you've only got three you have to think about them pretty carefully. One thing I thought about... remember LotR III? The elven Lambas bread that was small, easy to carry, and 'filled the belly of a grown man' with a couple of bites? After just a couple of days Sam and Frodo got so sick of it they were wishing for chicken and potato soup, which isn't really the most exciting of dishes! That's the nature of mankind. (sorry for the massive dorkiness of the reference there, my hubby and I watched all three of the movies last week)

A Xtian Fundie suddenly gets visited by Allah (though would s/he even know Allah, since no-one knows what he looks like?) telling him Jesus ain't God. So s/he becomes a Islam Fundie, which immediately means a visit from Buddha informing Allah was a lie. So s/he becomes a Buddhist Fundie, which entails a visit from Vishnu and so on and so on...

i would trade all three for just one too: the kind of world i would rather be living in.

one the didn't put trying to impress each other ahead of the real gratifications of creating and exploring, and thus avoided just about everything that is wrong with the one most of us are surrounded by.

one that did not romantacize or reward aggressiveness.

one without building codes or border patrols.

one without chauvanism, fanatacism, beligerance, or prejudices of any kind, even economic or idiological.

one also that wasn't endangering its entire web of life by using combustion to generate energy and propell transportation.

one where governments, if the exist at all, do so to keep people from starving, freezing or beating each other over the head and to insure the environmental compatability of physical infrastructure, and to otherwise stay out of sight and out of mind.

one where villages are gardens with winding paths that fallow natural features and contours rather then rectangular grids of pavement.

one where there are always good things to eat and places where no one will bother you to sleep and plenty of diversity and oddness to inspire the immagination and stimulate the mind.

(2)oh yes i'd also like to have as much tools and materials and places to do things creative with them as i have the skills and immagination to do so.

(3)and to live long and healthy enough to enjoy doing so.

but a world where everyone has the same unlimited opportunities for real gratification, not the bankrupt pretentions of austentation and the pseudosophistries of excitement, that are causing so much suffering and harm in ours, that is the main number one thing, if i could have anything i want, more then anything else i could possibly immagine. (yes, even omnipotence)

1.) First off, since it was never specified that I couldn't I wish for a grand total of eleven wishes. If you change the rules so I can't, I'll wish for multiple other Djinn. Hurrah for loopholes.

2.) Second off, I'd wish for a lawyer to word the following wishes in lawyerspeak, so the Genie couldn't misinterpret them.

3.) An increase of all resources required by humanity, to the correct amount for one thousand years, including in the calculations the growth of man-kind.

4.) An even distribution of the above.

5.) Invulnerabilty, including to old age, sickness, phsyical harm, etc.

6.) The ability to die when and if I choose to, and to remain dead as long as I choose to.

7.) The gift of tongues. The aforementioned here being defined as a combination of the ability to speak any language I am around for more than five minutes, as well as exceptional wittiness.

8.) A nice pyramid in the middle of the Sahara, the inside being luxuriously decorated, and filled with state-of-the-art entertainment systems.

9.) A decent long term alternative to fossil fuels, which would allow humanity to keep their current lifestyles, without trashing the enviroment as such.

10.) A 'sister planet' to Earth, always on the opposite side of the sun, which would function as a huge nature reserve, displaying what Earth would be like if humans had never come out of the trees. (Or been created by God, or evolved from fish, or whatever).

First, a long talk with the Genie about the nature of things and what can be wished for, etc.

(1) That if someone were to go to another and say, "Teach me", then if the teacher agreed, the student would have the teachers full understanding and level of skill in the topic/skill/ability being taught after only 10 seconds of the teacher staring into the student's eyes.

(2) The ability to magically transport myself anywhere/anywhen I wanted, including into fictional books/movies/RPGs/etc, to interact with the people and creatures there.

I'd then spend some time chatting with the Djinn - depending on the reason it's in the bottle, I might use the third wish to free it.

If not, then I'm thinking something like "The ability to summon to my hand objects from fiction/books/movies/RPGs/etc"

(The last two wishes presume a "Number of the Beast"/"Compleat Enchanter"/"Amber" style universe, where those places actually do exist, but are only dimly glimpsed by our subconcious as inspiration. Depending on how the conversation with the Djinn went, the second wish might be "I wish the universe were like that" and the third the "travel" one)

People I'd be asking to teach me after that -

"Merlin, son of Corwin and Dara, could I bug you for a minute to teach me about Logrus, sorcery and conjuration?"

"Benedict, could I beg a moment of your time in exchange for my having pulled you out of the grass?"

(Wonder if anyone here will get that reference....)

"So, Professor Seldon, may I bother you for a quick run down on this math thing you're working on?"

"Mister Tesla, could you teach me about electricity for a moment?"

"Mister Carnegie, how _do_ you win friends and influence people?"

After that, things would be entertaining....

Everyone on earth to be sterile for a period of 25 years. Got to reduce that population.

The ability to talk anyone into anything in about five minutes or less. I could make a fortune in Real Estate and in my spare time work out world peace at the UN.

I would wish for:

1. My father's good health.

2. Enough time and money to travel around the world, both to visit friends that have scattered around the globe and to see all the places I haven't yet seen.

3. A time travel machine.

1. I wish that anyone who currently had "extreme" thoughts about any belief system (Islam, Communism, Christianity, you name it) that involved violently subduing other people would suddenly "pop" out of existence. And that any further thoughts about the violent extremes of any philosophy would be translated into the very real taste of raw carrot, herring, marmite, and peanut butter mixed together in their mouths.

2. I wish that Iraq, as a place, would be erased silently from the planet and from history and memory.

3. I wish to be extremely rich.

1) The ability to manipulate time at will, without aging as I do so.

2) Everyone becomes gay for 10 years, then they become bisexual.

3) For 10 random minutes each day (but in one 10-minute block), people feel the emotions of others around them - literal empathy. This won't usually kick in until after you've interacted with somebody.

1. A condo in center city Philly. Right across the street from city hall and love park, there's a condo building that has a bar, and a starbucks in the lobby, I want to live there.

2. Billions of dollars to spend on whatever the hell I want.

3. An extra day so I could finish all the stuff I need to do for my government class.

2. Eternal youth and eternal health (not out and out immoratility mind you. It's okay if death occurs via accident.)

3. Inifinate financial resources.

...what would you wish for?

I would wish for:

1. The power to make the woman in my dreams fall in love with me (and only me) unconditionally and for all time

2. More wealth than the 50 richest people combined (I would give away at least 99.9% of it away, though)

3. Eternal youth for myself and my lady (so we would remain physically young until the day we died)
I would only have ONE wish....

That all my wishes would be fulfilled :)

Papers describe your death as, "bizarre, disturbing and nauseating. Yet strangley hilarious"
From then on, you're always remembered as 'that guy who was killed by the crazy clown".

2. For everyone in the world to realize their full potential so that they'll strive to rise from poverty by themselves and not rely on Gov. Co.

1. The first wish I'd make is that there was no limit to wishes I had and that I'd have more (maybe infinite) wishes.

2. My second wish would be to have a ring or something else I could wear instead of having to lug around a lamp, bottle, or soda can if I didn't get a ring genie to start with.

considering that Babylonia (where Iraq is now) gave us the first code of laws, written language, mathematics and various other things (including a cool garden), you're condemning us right back to the Dark Ages (and further!) with that wish.

Wow... this is a toughie. I'm going to assume I only get 3 wishes, not being able to wish for me wishes or get another genie (or however you spell it) or whatever. Just 3 wishes.

1. Instant Cognition+Understanding (I know others have used it, but it's a good idea)

2. To be 24 years of age for as long as I don't not want it.. And to make it known that I don't want it, I will have to snap my fingers 3 times and say "I no longer wish to be 24 years of age forever", then repeat that whole process 3 more times in under 1 minute so it's not some random accidental thing.

3. Dr. Xavier's powers (like from x-men) with complete and total contrallability and without the nasty side-effects that come with it. Such as the wheelchair bound-baldness and the funny eyebrows.

Eh, I know they're selfish, but hey, can't make everyone happy :P.

1. Alyson Hannigan on my lap.

2. Eliza Dushku on my lap.

3. Keira Knightly on my lap.

Nice fuckin' trio!

As for myself...I worked this one out a long time ago.

1. My wishes will work out exactly as I intend them to...*insert lawyer-speak here*

2. I will wish for the power of Verbal Infallibility. Essentially, whatever I say...IS.

I can change myself in any way imaginable, and back again. I can give myself any superpower, change my age, race, gender, etc.

I can change others in the same fashion.

I can travel to anywhere at any time, I can alter the flow of time (slower or faster)....I can even travel to fictional places.

I can remove the lack of need for sleep or food.

I can do anything else...so long as I can form the concept into words.

3. I don't really need this wish anymore, so I will wish for someone else to recieve my last wish, with the sole restriction being that their wish will in no way interfere with the effects of wishes #1 and #2, now or at any other time...*insert more lawyer speak*

Good to go. :D
