I always preferred ACoS, though to be fair, only the title song is original (although that song is why I like it.)
Let's see, Train of Thought is heavy metal. Through and through. Octavarium has a lot of variety. I haven't opened Metropolis Part II yet, but I hear it's good.

No, you gotta go with Acrobatic Tenement. :)
Otherwise, I'd suggest Hot Water Music - Never Ender and Small Brown Bike - Dead Reckoning.
And then, add some songs by Pig Destroyer, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Orchid, Converge, Ed Gein, Daughters and all of Calculating Infinity by Dillinger Escape Plan.

Best single album? Well, my favorite is Legacy of Brutality. Or Collection I
But it's better to just get their best songs:
Halloween
Die, Die, My Darling
Hybrid Moments
Some Kinda Hate
Angelfuck
She
Helena
Dig Up Her Bones
Night of the Living Dead

For some tasty, SF - outer space rock, try the band, Hawkwind.
If you'd like to try something really different, Vernon Reid, the guitarist from Living Colour, did a solo album called Mistaken Identity. It's got rock, fusion jazz, rap, hip-hop, even a hilarious cameo by Laurence Fishburn. An interesting tribute to Cobain, too ;)

I like all of them a lot.
If you like hardcore, The Shape of Punk to Come by Refused is a definite must to check out and Blood, Guts, and Pussy by the Dwarves is pretty cool, even though the full album only clocks in at 15 minutes.
For something similar to Mastodon, i'm not sure what to recommend. They have a bit in common with sludge and stoner metal (particularly their earlier stuff), but it's pretty superficial a resemblance - you might like bands like Crowbar or Eyehategod (although neither of them are nearly as technical as Mastodon, they have a similar feel at times) or maybe for something a bit easier to digest and slightly more mainstream, Corrosion of Conformity. Mastodon toured with Clutch for a while, you might like them too, except they're far more blues-rocky than metal.
And for something inbetween hardcore and metal, try Facedowninshit (http://www.myspace.com/facedowninshit) (Eyehategod whom I mentioned earlier would probably qualify too).

Godspeed You! Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion, Mogwai, Mad Capsule Markets, 65daysofstatic, Boredoms, Sigur Rós....
Not rock bands per se, but damn good guitar music.
I would recommend most of the stuff on my Windows Media Player (sorted roughly, very roughly i.e. badly, by genre):
-'Nu-metal/Metalcore': 36 Crazyfists, Atreyu, Avenged Sevenfold, Blindside, Lostprophets (early stuff)
-'Metal': Arch Enemy, Cathedral, Cradle of Filth, Dragonforce, Filter, God Forbid, In Flames, Katatonia, Killswitch Engage, Mastodon, Metallica, Thrice, Trivium,
-'Goth': Lacuna Coil, Nightwish
-'Emo': Alkaline Trio, Brand New, Funeral for a Friend, Hiding With Girls, Jimmy Eat World, Nightmare of You
-'Prog': At the Drive-In, Coheed and Cambria, The Mars Volta, Muse
-'Punk/Hardcore': AFI, Billy Talent, Boysetsfire, Boys Night Out, Dem Brooklyn Bums, Distillers, Engerica, Fall of Troy, Finch, Horrorpops, The Living End, Millencolin, Reuben, Protest the Hero, Rise Against, Say Anything, Sahara Hotnights, Ska-P, Span, Symposium
-Other (covers a wide range I suppose): Biffy Clyro, Circa Survive, Dissociatives, Hundred Reasons, Idlewild, King Adora, Open Hand, Our Lady Peace, Serafin, Test Icicles, Therapy?
But of the lot? Go for Arch Enemy, Dragonforce, In Flames, Therapy?, Coheed and Cambria, Rise Against, Reuben and Hundred Reasons first

That's actually their third LP. ;) And apart from "The Murder Mystery", I don't think it's so great. I prefer 1968's White Light/White Heat myself. It's an incredibly disturbing and dissonant album that shouldn't be fun to listen to, but somehow it is. And who can forget the line "She's been sucking on my Dingdong!!!"? :p

And who can forget the line "She's been sucking on my Dingdong!!!"? :p:( I forgot about White Light/White Heat. But I find it unfun (and rock should be fun even when depressing is my mantra) even if it does use dingdong as a lyric. :D

 Oh please. If you're going to attempt to be an elitist, you'd fit the mold a lot better if you cited 9 albums nobody has ever heard of plus the Velvet Underground and Nico.
I'm not trying to be an elitist. I'm just saying that many of the bands people are suggesting aren't even rock at all.

Here is a useful site for music lovers. Pandora is a sort of internet radio, only you get to choose what you want to hear. Just make a channel by putting in the name of a band or song you like, and it will bring up music that is similar.

:p I figured people are bored of me telling them they should listen to 65...
Am actually listening to them for the first time now, after ages of hearing you mention them and me being curious.... and I do really like them :) Not as much as you do ;) but still :p
Muse's style is excellent so all their albums.

The eponymous 1969 album, of course. The '67 album (aka the banana album) was more significant, but the second LP was better. ;)
Velvet Underground and Nico I think probably just beats WhiteLight/White Heat....although I do like Loaded and The Velvet Underground :D .......have they ever done a bad album? (not included the post Lou Reed album Squeeze)
The Fratellis
Hard Fi

What if I took them of the list and replaced them with Kasabian and Lost Prophets?

It would experience a slight rise, because I quite liked Kasabian's first album, but would instantly drop again because of Lost Prophets :p
How about My Chemical Romance?

Well, I think the following are rather good...
Oceansize,
Cave In,
Yourcodenameis:milo,
and I would add Genghis Tron to my list, but as everyone I know who I've forced to listen to them thinks they're crap its probably not worthwhile in a recommendation thread :p

So could we say 80%?
Oceansize,
Yourcodenameis:milo,
Good call on the both of them (although I really only like the All Roads to Fault 7 track by ycni:m). Oceansize are one of my favourite bands, definitely.

I'm trying to think of what albums to burn. So recommend some albums you listen to to me.
Derek and the Dominoes - Layla and other assorted love songs.
Eric Clapton and Duane Allman at their best.

How is that elitist? They're all classic, well-known albums.

Because, rather like the band themselves, it's rather bland and repetitive ;)

Try Rammstein. I know they're german, but try to listen with an open mind and you'll like it.
:( I forgot about White Light/White Heat. But I find it unfun (and rock should be fun even when depressing is my mantra) even if it does use dingdong as a lyric. :D
Really? I think it's their most fun record by far. Meh, each to their own. :P
I'm not trying to be an elitist. I'm just saying that many of the bands people are suggesting aren't even rock at all.
Says he who cited Black Sabbath - a lot of people would argue that they're metal, not rock, no? We could get into an extensive argument over any one of the bands listed in this thread as to whether or not they qualify as "rock", but you were the one who came in and labelled it all metalcore, and had the "you people have absolutely no idea what rock is" and "kids these days" comments. Therefore, you came across like an elitist, which irritated me. :p
(and; in relation to your comments, I own all except one of the albums you listed, so bite me ;) :p)
How is that elitist? They're all classic, well-known albums.
That was my point. It was the comments he made that gave that impression, but were followed up by a list of albums that nearly everyone has heard - if you're going to be a jaded elitist, you have to do it correctly. ;)

Wow, persistence really does pay off. :)
Go see them next time they tour - you really won't regret it.
One day, everyone on this forum will be a 65 fan...

Depends which Lostprophets album(s). Their first was really good, and if they'd continued developing their style of metal they'd be one of my favourite bands now. But they went shit instead. Their second album was almost passable, but since then...

Ahhh the wonderfull world of internet forums!
