Repealing women's suffrage - how many votes?

Vernasia
04-12-2006, 17:51
Someone was saying today that he could get 10,000 people in our local area alone to sign a petition calling for women's suffrage to be revoked.
What proportion of people would genuinely want this, and what proportion could be tricked into signing such a petition (thinking suffrage is the same as suffring)?

By the way, my personal opinion is that, if anyone ever made enough of a case for this for it to become an election issue, then virtually every woman in the country (even those who don't normally bother) would vote against any party proposing it.

Actually, now that you mention it, I remember a bit Leno did where he polled people on the streets of NYC, asking if they would support ending women's suffrage. A lot said things like, "Yeah, we need to stop the suffering of women."

Years ago The Man Show did a bit on that, where they had a table set up and asked people to sign a petition opposing women's suffrage. Sadly, it got a surprising amount of support, precisely because of ignorance.

And children, with signs saying, "Please don't make my Mommy suffer!"

That's the point I tried to make when he suggested that, if he did get the required number of signatures, our MP would be obliged to support it.

I've heard comments from some that indicate they would vote in favor of such a thing. But they are rare, and considering that A) there are typically more women than men, B) women have a higher voter turnout than men, and C) a lot more men would be against this than women for it, we can safely say that such a plebiscite would most likely be failed, if it isn't ruled unconstitutional.

I don’t think anyone seriously was arguing for revoking suffrage – the only people signing it would be those too ignorant to understand and too stupid to ask, or those who know exactly what its all about and want in on the joke.

Things like this simply highlight why democracy doesn’t work.

I don't get a whole lot of Chattanooga Choo-Choo sung at me, but my home district isn't Chattanooga, I'm just attending our high-quality state university here.

Anyways, my home district is in the more rural part of west Tennessee. It was funny, no one thought he'd make it and then he did. He was running as a republican and the moment it made the news they were like "OH SHIT HE'S NOT ONE OF US!"

(Yeah! Hurray!)
Now you have heard of Women's Rights,
And how we've tried to reach new heights.
If we're "all created equal"...
That's us too!

(Yeah!)

But you will proba ... bly not recall
That it's not been too ... too long at all,
Since we even had the right to
Cast a vote.

(Well!)

Well, sure, some men bowed down and called us "Mrs." (Yeah!)
Let us hang the wash out and wash the dishes, (Huh!)
But when the time rolled around to elect a president...

What did they say, Sister, (What did they say?)

They said, uh, "See ya later, alligator,
And don't forget my ... my mashed potatoes,
'Cause I'm going downtown to cast my vote for president."

Oh, we were suffering until suffrage,
Not a woman here could vote, no matter what age,
Then the 19th Amendment struck down that restrictive rule. (Oh yeah!)

And now we pull down on the lever,
Cast our ballots and we endeavor
To improve our country, state, county, town, and school.

(Tell 'em 'bout it!)

Those pilgrim women who ...
Who braved the boat
Could cook the turkey, but they ...
They could not vote.
Even Betsy Ross who sewed the flag was left behind that first election day.

(What a shame, Sisters!)

Then Susan B. Anthony (Yeah!) and Julia Howe,
(Lucretia!) Lucretia Mott, (and others!) they showed us how;
They carried signs and marched in lines
Until at long last the law was passed.

Oh, we were suffering until suffrage,
Not a woman here could vote, no matter what age,
Then the 19th Amendment struck down that restrictive rule. (Oh yeah!)

And now we pull down on the lever,
Cast our ballots and we endeavor
To improve our country, state, county, town, and school. (Right On! Right On!)

Yes the 19th Amendment
Struck down that restrictive rule. (Right On! Right On!)

Yes the 19th Amendment
Struck down that restrictive rule.
(Yeah, yeah!
Yeah, yeah!
Right on!
We got it now!

Since 1920...
Sisters, unite!
Vote on!

Yeah, because taking away the rights of the female population would be so funny! (sarcasm).

On another note, i am appalled by the number of people who don't know what suffrage is. People of such ignorance should really go read a book or do some research on random things. Look at it this way, if they don't know what suffrage is, imagine all the other things they don't know about. I'm 14 years old and studied what it was when i was 11; it's not exactly complicated stuff. I think we can all agree that people like this should educate themselves to help both themselves and society. And then there are those who are "too lazy" and don't do anything. They should shoot themselves.

A friend and I did this at our school once. We made a poster that said "End Women's Suffrage" and an empty sheet for signatures and put them on the main bulletin board. We got about 15 signatures before the principal took it down later that day.

I'd say about 1/3 of the students who saw it actually knew what the word meant.
