depends. I have two Seagate (http://www.seagate.com/products/retail/portable/index.html)40 Gig flash drives. and I am so far happy with em.

tho am thinking of picking up the larger (160 gig... it think) one soon. I paid 130 for them.

it does take up 2 usb ports but no complaints from me yet.

Well I do take a lot of photos.. so I already have thousands of them, and that number will keep growing. Each picture is around 2mb, let's say. Then there's all the random things I make with PhotoShop, witch I'd also think about putting on the external hd.

My advice is to get a good large Western digital drive and buy an external caddy to put it in. I myself own a Western digital Mybook 320Gb drive and it is an amazing buy, great performance for an external drive and looks neat too! But yeah i just hooked a mate up with 250Gb storage in an external drive by buying the caddy seperate, cost around about £60 so i dunno maybe $140.

I just got a 250. I think at about 250 or 320 is the best value for money, before the price skyrockets. I never thought I'd fill the 570 gigs I already had.

But a few porn films, a few regular films, a few games and some video editing software plus dv captures to edit and CD images and DVD images and god only knows what else...... it fills pretty fast.

Blasphemy! The average HD for a dedicated storage is 250 minimum at best.

My mobile setup carries 600GB of storage with a pair of 250s on caddies and it still doesn't have a patch on the good 2+ TB storage rigs that my peers have.

That being said, Maxtor makes good drives.

Western Digital makes a great external hard drive.
Seagate makes a great product also.

If I were buying a new hard drive I would compare these brands and see which one you prefer based on price, warranty, capacity etc.

Western Digital makes a 500 gig HD that is pretty much the best out there. Right now, around the US, and other nations, Office Depot has them on sale. They may need to be ordered, but you'll get it within 1-3 business days, and pow, you've got the best HD on the market. Auto-power on/off with your computer, USB 2.0 connectivity, endless space, and the best quality money can buy. Go out, young padawan Ruffy, and buy.

I think its cheaper to purchase the external hard-drive and the hard-drive shell separately. I'm using an ULTRA Mini Portable Disk Shell, and a nice 190G hard-drive (forgot which brand it was). It costed me about CDN $150 (tigerdirect.ca). :)

Ruffy, I would suggest browsing on www.newegg.com I know jack shit about external harddrives, but I guarentee you'll find what you're looking for if you look there. It's where I got all the goodies I put into the computer I built meself.

The USB cables are much slower than the disk, while the SATA cable is faster than the disk. Internal disks are much faster.

I must admit, I have no need to transfer files to another computer. Had I, I'd use our wireless network, which while slower, is free.

That's what the magic of SATA direct connect cables are for my dear Posi. Once the ports are installed on the computer, I can still keep my externals (SATA compatible) and get SATA speeds.

You know my work when I am doing jobsite data backup, and recovery they are extreemly usefull but I would never use them as a primary storage medium because of the problems that you listed

I bought a caddy for an 80 Gb I had lying around since I sometimes need to move lots of information to and from the office, more than I can carry in a SD card.

Go for Seagate or Western Digital. Maxtors ball bearings have had a tendency to wear out pretty fast. Also, since it's for porn storage, you won't need extreme acess speeds, so go for a 5600rpm and more gigs instead of a faster drive with less storage. You could probably get a nice 500 gig for around 200 bucks.

It's simple really. Most SATA compatible caddys are also USB capable. So either way, it's a win win situation. With a computer that has a working firewire port, you're gold. If it's only got USBs, no problem. If it doesn't have either, it's a slowass 90s computer that probably isn't worth plugging a caddy into. :p

You have to format the drive yes, you also need to set it up to have a MBR off your windows install. The Os then will recognize it fine, same as any other external drive. :)

@Ruffie: The mybook is a very good drive, great quality with good read/write speeds.

Given my limited knowledge of computarz I say get the one with the biggest number in front of the GB.
