Government Study Determines That There's Porn Online
from the thanks-for-clearing-that-up dept

Remember how the government basically subpoenaed everyone they could possibly think of to get data to support their argument defending the constitutionality of the COPA (Child Online Protection Act)? Apparently, they used all of that data to crunch some numbers and tell the court that (would you believe it?) there's actually some pornography online. Aren't you glad that plenty of taxpayer money went into figuring that out? Despite what both sides in the case are trying to say about the results, it's not clear that it really says much at all. They found that 6% of queries lead to results that have adult material (and only 1% if filters are turned on) -- but it's not clear what that really means. A query returns tons of results. Is it counted if only one leads to sexually explicit material? If all of them? A certain threshold? The first link? Also, how do they define adult material? While it may be obvious in some cases, in plenty of others it's very much a subjective decision. Finally, the 6% number is still misleading, because most of those searches are probably by adults who are looking for completely legal adult material. If the case is about protecting children, shouldn't the real question be how often adult content is returned when kids do searches? So, in the end, we have the government demanding (and getting) a bunch of data from all sorts of internet and search companies, and then conducting a survey with taxpayer money, to tell us that there's a fair amount of porn online (though not overwhelmingly so) -- but little else of practical use to the actual question at hand, about whether or not the law is constitutional.

There's also an ongoing study trying to determine whether or not the Pope wears a large hat, but the study is on hold until they can secure more Federal grants.

Clearly, they are trying to demonstrate that it is easy for children to accidentally access pornography on the Internet, thus necessitating more stringent protections.

Nothing ridiculous about this at all, except the notion that children can and should somehow be kept in a bubble with regard to evil, dirty sex.

Good question... I propose an independant study to find out how much porn in out there and the seperate degrees of porn (Softcore, Hardcore) and the varying catagories (fetishes) of porn.

of course this will be funded by the Government, so who here wants to lobby for us here to do this... er... research... :D

That won't work, for people will get duplicate hits as they use different search engines as well as key words. we gotta list and catagorize each web site and their links.

also we have to examine each video and live chat/video site for authenticity... :D

Approximately 169.3 million sites, of which include the following:

Softcore: Approximately 38 million sites.
(Straight)Hardcore: Approximately 51.4 million
(Homosexual)Hardcore: 20 million.
Hentai(including all "artwork" pornography): A surprisingly high 27 million.
S&M: 17.3 million
Various Fetishes: 15.6 million.

How I know these numbers is up to interpretation.

Hentai(including all "artwork" pornography): A surprisingly high 27 million.

That's not that surprising. Japanese animated pornography--which is what most people refer to as hentai, though it is not the entirety of animated pornography--is extremely popular amongst a great variety of internet users these days, and will probably continue to grow in popularity. And you have to admire it, because every piece is practically a work of art all on its own. The sheer skill of Japanese animators is amazing.

Well, you must remember that I am very thorough, using every possible word for each category, searching site by site so as not to find duplicates.

Actually, I made those number up on the spot, just for a poor attempt at humor.

In truth, google puts the hits out at 58 million, which would actually be much lower due to double-hits and the such. Still, quite a high number.

And I'm not knocking the Japanese artstyle in the least.

porn =/= sex

If the sexual content were removed from pornography, do you think anyone would care about people viewing it? (Indeed, of what would it consist?)

Supposedly it gives unrealistic impressions of life or something, but so does all kinds of stuff on the Internet that Congress isn't passing laws to protect minors from; so do computer and video games of all kinds, even non-violent and non-sexual ones.

What it amounts to is sexual puritanism.
