The title says it all.
IMO, the most frightening film ever is Pink Flamingos. I only saw the final scene, and I was deeply, deepy perturbed and disturbed.

Tod Browning's Freaks is pretty dang disturbing. I watched The Exorcist through the spaces between my fingers.

What's the scariest film ever made?
I would have to say Blair Witch Project.
after all these years, I still tremble as to how much I paid to rent that film.
Its not the scariest, but it still gives me the chills today, which is pretty good if you ask me, and that movie would be signs.. I refuse to go out at night and look up at the roof :p

The Exorcist didn't scare me, though it was a powerful experience, and is an excellent movie.
I have yet to see Freaks. If only someone would release an uncut version...

changling... rent it and watch it with the lights off... and the sound up.
the seance scene still sends chills up my spine as you hear three voices talking, one asking questions, the medium answering those questions...

No blood and gore?!?!? Dang.. hah. I think brutality in horror films ruin them really. I mean it can add some fright in certain cases, but now a days its just excessive and not needed. I might rent this film :)

No fricking kidding. The first one I kind of liked. But that second one was purely retarded. Not even worth the film is was put on.

classic ghost story... there was another one. an old black and white film. can't remember the title but it was a newlywed couple moving into the wife's old house. and strange things start occuring. poltergiest things as well as possessions...
it ends up that the house is haunted not by one ghost, but two... and each one has their own agenda.

Are you thinking of C.H.U.D. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087015/) ? Not quite rats, but the 'cheesy' & NYC part fit.
I've never been as freaked out by a movie as I was after 'Nightmare on Elm Street'. I didn't sleep for days. Granted, I was maybe 10 at the time.
Now that I think of it, I'm going to sue those filmakers for my chronic insomnia...:)

the EVIL (http://imdb.com/title/tt0077524/).
a professor offers his students extra credit in exchange in helping him and his wife move into their new home. only to descover that the mystrious sealed door in their basement is none other than a doorway to Hell.
it was great, each student is offed in some cheep 70's fashion, (like the guy so obsessed in escaping the house that he cuts his own hand off with the rotary saw or the one guy who actually made it out, only to be swallowed up by the beautiful garden...)
but...
they decend through the doorway and end up with a joke cracking, jolly beared devil that is defeated by being stabbed with an iron rod... :headbang:
but for a real scare...
I suggest
Phantasmagoria and Fatal Frame.
the first is a game for the PC. it's old, but still will tighten your spincter.
and Fatal Frame series for the PS 2... even after finishing it years ago... I still won't play that game after sundown.
and neither would anyone I've met who played that game.

*goes back to youtube to find new episode of lost halostyle and of the other one i watch*
The scariest movie I've seen in recent memory would be the new War of the Worlds. The first time I saw it in theatres I was white-knuckled from the scene at the bridge when they lose their vehicle to the end. The bridge scene was particularly terrifying because that is exactly what would happen in a crisis situation. I was shaking so badly, I couldn't sleep that night. The scene in the farmhouse was very fear-inducing as well.
I think I have a phobia of peoples behaviour in desperate situations.

The ring scared the hell out of me. Only horror movie to do that in quite sometime.
That movie had some scary parts. I think the scariest is when the teenage girl dies and the mom says something like, "It was the look on her face." And then you see the girl's dead body in the closet. The other is when you see the murderous little girl staring at the clock in her little solitary confinment place because she never slept. That was a few years ago, I probably wouldn't find the movie so scary any more.
I'd say the only movie that's made me genuinly scared is Aliens, but I was 11 or something when I saw it.
I think horror movies get less scary as you get older.

I have never been afraid of a horror film. It pisses me off when people say films are scary and I see them and think they're funny.
e.g.
"The Exorcist is the scariest film ever!" ... I literally pissed myself laughing at the possession scenes.
"Saw is the most horrible, scariest film ever!" ... I laughed so hard at how fucking retarded the people were in it. I felt no pity, nevermind fear.
"The Ring is the scariest film ever!" ... Quite simply, no, it's not. Neither is the Japanese version. Stop saying this. If you do, you're an idiot.
"Audition is the scariest film ever!" ... No, it's not. I laughed until my appendix burst when she was sticking the needles in him.

I laughed until my appendix burst when she was sticking the needles in him.
ohhh....aren't ye a tough wee scotsman. I bet ye stick thistles in ye oats for breakfast.

Not finding them scary is fine, I think they're more gross than anything else; but to think they're funny just makes you look sick, unless you're trying to be funny, in which case you just look stupid.

no. But trust me, if you want genuinely frightening stuff-nightmares-are-made-of movies, go Japanese.
Don't believe me? watch Audition. Go on. I dare you.
Audition gave me the oogies. I don't know if it is true, but on imdb trivia (http://imdb.com/title/tt0235198/trivia) it says the guy in the bag was really eating vomit.

I would have to say Blair Witch Project.
after all these years, I still tremble as to how much I paid to rent that film.
HA! Thats what I was gonna say.
"SHUT UP MAN!!! Theres no BABY out there!!!"
:D
My wife was terrified-I asked her why she was scared of other people being scared? Dont you need an actual reason?
I often leave a small bundle of twigs outside the door when I'm starting a fire.
You know how horrifying twigs can be.

I'm quite sick. Anyone who cannot see the humour in "The Exorcist", for example, appears to be a moron to me. If you watched it with a Benny Hill soundtrack it'd be slapstick.
The title says it all.
IMO, the most frightening film ever is Pink Flamingos. I only saw the final scene, and I was deeply, deepy perturbed and disturbed.
I've seen all of it except for the final scene (it finally occured to me to stop watching that horrible movie), and I'm right there with you.

Ironically, it's just the opposite for me. I saw only the final scene. :p

Going hiking into the mountains and not carrying extra food?
not knowing your way around a map and compass and not taking a guide?
ditching the map and compass because her royal bitchiness was lost and taking it out on you?
not taking a 2 way radio?
they were just asking to die.
the only good thing to come from that drek is all the adult parodies.
"Nude Witch Project"
"Erotic Witch Project"
etc...

Agreed! One should also rent The Entity (http://imdb.com/title/tt0082334/)!
I cant believe Hollywood hasnt re-made this one yet.
It seems with the still-popular remade horror classics trend that has become as tiresome as a Chuck Norris joke, that this one would have been re-done already.
Still, My personal choices for scariest ever would be "The Exorcist" or maybe "In the Mouth of Madness."
However, I will go on record as saying "The Devil's Rejects" is the best horror film since 2000.

I spent the entire time sitting in the cinema thinking, "Ok, I wouldn't do that...Nor would I do that...wouldn't do that"
I think the movie should be used as a training vid for search and rescue on what not to do in the bush.
First and foremost of course would be, "Don't tell any inbred Deliverance folk that you're going in there unarmed."

There's only a few movies that I've really found scary:
- The Others (though I guessed the ending like halfway through)
- The Ring (I don't care what anyone says, that movie freaked me out)
- The Shining (Kubrick was a genius)
- Most Hitchcock movies
Totally not-scary movies:
- The Haunting (The new one. Sucked hugely, especially the ending. The original from 1963 was so much better.)
- Anything by M. Night Shyamalan after Sixth Sense (Both Signs and The Village crapped out totally in the ending.)
- Anything with excessive blood/gore (Only gets silly)
- Any other movie based on a Stephen King book

I need a very real reason,up close and personal, to feel fear. I'm funny like that.
That girl's snout dripping snot as she blubbered was funny as was the last scene where the guy was standing in the corner-I said "whats he taking a piss?"
My wife and her friend were terrified, they referred to when someone was killed- I was like wait !?! Who got killed and by what? The camera dropped and went off-did they walk into a beam?
Thats not scary.
And I get endless laughs out of the "SHUT UP MAN!!!! THERES NO BABY OUT THERE!!" line- like some man eating were-baby was stalking their camp, looking for cowardly meat.
I just videotaped Ruffy stripping in the Office Party thread.

The Thing and Aliens. Recently, I liked Dog Soldiers, and I've heard nothing but good things for The Descent.
