"The police want powers to proscribe protest chants and slogans on placards, banners and headbands." Doesn't that strike anyone as being just a little authoritarian? Is the UK really moving that way?

Scary.

Btw, I noticed your location. What part of Thailand are you in?

Chiang Mai.

The police here would like me to inform you that everything is fine and nobody is unhappy.

I have several friends in Thailand. None in CM, though.

Just curious, but are you Thai or an expat?

PC gone wild to be sure.

Police are to demand new powers to arrest protesters for causing offence through the words they chant and the slogans on their placards and even headbands.

I wonder what would happen if people with air horns "bleeped" out offensive words as they were being chanted...

Sad part is the police can probably do this in England under the 2004 Prevention of Crime, Counter Terrorism and the Police Can Do What They Bloody Well Like Act.

Whoa.... looks the the world really is moving toward 1984....
Well, of course the police shoul dhave the right to be authoritarian! These are times of anarchy and if anarchy moves in we'll all die!

Remember folks, if you want to protest, you must tell the UK police what you want your slogans to say. Pretty basic right there. That sucks for you guys, eh? It's a common belief that protestors are always in the wrong. Good thing this is not happening in the US. :p

Then the government will have people smart enough to figure it out. It sucks so very badly when the government does that. Arggh, it's evil. :(

The latter, though I detest the term. I am on the run from the British Police, who want to question me in connection with grammatical errors on a headband I once wore in a 1978 CND rally.

Isn't the USA the place where protesters are required to stay within "designated freedom of speech zones" during presidential appearances?

"...designated freedom of speech zones..."

One assumes that the Presidential podium is situated outside the perimeters of such a zone...

Maybe.... >.> <.< But at least our police aren't trying to control what protestors use as slogans on picket signs.

Hmmm You know, nothing good can come from wallowing in this form of amusement. Those agencies who revile such weasly, tactless and really troublesome devices would probably start investigating us.

Everyone knows all those who use subliminal messages are satanic, evil, Muslim suicide bomber types terrorists who want to destroy our beautiful nation. Subliminal messages are everything the USA stands for, and we aren't going to let those cut-and-run liberals change that for as long as we are here! That's why the government created the Patriot Act, it is so nobody could transmit hateful anti-American messages to the world.

now now, everyone really pushes all their neutrality and good old common sense so far into the ground even worms are incredulous as to how deep and far people will go as they nonchalantly opinionate on how everything is due the Patriot Act's well thought out construction, even if that country isn't part of the USA.
