Santa Banned from Christmas Party

And you know of course that the Christmas party became some sort of Holiday event, right?

Turns out that Santa isn't as secular as he should be. Okay, Santa is based on St Nicholas, but that was a pretty long time ago and I don't think too many of us make that association anyway.

Not true for an easily offended mom, who wished to remain anonymous, of Sanfordville, NJ, I think. She managed to get Santa banned from the school. It amazes me how fast a school administration will rush to placate a single unhappy parent. Must be the lawyers.

Isn't it about time we quit pandering to each and every "victim" that claims to be offended by one thing or another?

"That parent, who did not wish her name to be used, said she and others in the community were offended by the PTA sponsoring an event geared toward one religion."

Doesn't want her name used...hmm...
Geared toward one religion...what religion is that? Santanism? Wasn't Santa (as we know him today) introduced by Coca-Cola?

This deserves one enormous

Whenever I see stories like this, I always look for some indication that the story's been taken out of context or exaggerated. I have to say, I don't see that here.

Weird, she wanted him banned because she thinks he's a religious icon.

My girls' last babysitter was very religious, and didn't teach her kids (ok ok, fool them) about Santa because he WASN'T religious...she wanted Christmas to be about Christ, and the gifts came from her and her family, not from Santa. But she never went around ruining it for others.

So who's the biggest douchebag? The secular lady, hands-down. And I'm a freakin' atheist.

No, I think Santa as we know him in the US was introduced by Thomas Nast during the 19th century. I agree on the enormous  this deserves. Land of the Free and Home of the Lawsuit. As an atheist, this makes me want to go to New Jersey and slap the unnamed parent for making both atheists and the Garden State look silly.

Santa Claus is religious???????

Most religious people I know don't like him.

Sometimes I wonder if the Americans are bound and determined to become as generic and uninteresting as possible.

As one of the posters said in the article.

It's time to ban ALL public schools altogether. Give everyone a school voucher and let them choose and attend their own non public schools so everyone doesn't have to be dictated to by everyone else’s pet peeves.

That lady can take her kids to some non-Santa school, someone else can have their Jesus nativity scene school, someone else can have their happy Hanukah school and someone else can have their winter equinox school and so on and so forth. OBVIOUSLY we can't even get along with each other anymore without fighting and bickering and whining like little brats, and when my kids can't get along or agree on anything and keep fighting about it and nobody is happy anymore, I separate them and it makes things better for one and all.

Horrid idea, some private "school" could teach Greek mythology as absolute truth.

Educational standards in this country, lax as they are, would go to hell in a generation.

The problem is not the public school system, it's thoughtless people who have no qualms about imposing their ideas on others with the threat of a lawsuit. It's funny, really, the complaining parent says she wants to be inclusive and she ends up excluding. She should be made to sit in the corner until she has thought about what a Scrooge she's become (assuming it was a she, I forget, actually).

so what would happen if other parents got together and said that the lack of a Santa was offensive to them?

Still, he represents Christmas and that is a religious holiday. Greenhall said he would take the blame for this ever coming to pass.

Gee... what's next.
No more Easter Bunny because Easter is a Religous Holiday?
No more Turkey on Thanksgiving which is another Religious baised Holiday?
No more MLK day because it focuses only one one race of humans?
and let's not forget the other symbols of Christmas... no more Trees, no more Presents, all those are also symbols of a Religious Holiday, like the Nativity scene...

yep, PC running rampant in the 21st Century.

I think accreditation would take care of that, but that's another idea for another day.

I still shake my head (no) when I think about Santa being a religious figure.

I like this part:

“Santa is not a religious figure,” said Roca. “He is a mythical character. Many churches try to take Santa out of Christmas because he is secular, not religious. Their Christmas plays have nothing to do with Santa.”

Still, he represents Christmas and that is a religious holiday. Greenhall said he would take the blame for this ever coming to pass.

“When I reviewed the calendar in July, I should have caught the ‘Breakfast with Santa,’” said Greenhall, who volunteered at the meeting to dress up as Frosty himself in an effort to resolve the situation.

Last Friday morning, Greenhall consulted with the lawyers yet again, proposing the compromise that Frosty the Snowman would appear at the event as well as Santa. The lawyers agreed that having Frosty and Santa would make the event more inclusive.

Um, people, Frosty is just as associated with Christmas as Santa is. How would he make it less Christmassy?

Oh poppycock, they are already in hell.

Besides, just pass a law that says a common standard of understanding for the kids must be met in the basics for each child, so the schools need to maintain a testable and verifiable education requirement (like the No Child Left Behind idea, but make it more precise and less interpretable and dictate it on all schools that can receive funds for services).

If you're worried about the union teachers and what not, pass another law that says all schools must pay at least union minimum wages and hold at least union minimum standards for teacher credentials etc., etc., etc.

Its ALL about the public schools, if they weren't public this wouldn't be a problem because a private school could simply tell the parent that didn't like some tit for tat thing to go sod off and pick a different school then.

When they put his hat on, he says, "Happy Birthday!," actually. But, in the cartoon anyways, Santa comes and gets Frosty (after he melts in the greenhouse) and promises to bring him back every Christmas.

Technically Santa is based on Father Christmas, who is most likely based on several norse gods. Saint Nicholas only gave the American version a name to please the dutch settlers - but there is very little that reminds us of a tall and scrawny bishop from Turkey in Santa.

I believe it started with the turkish saint giving presents to the poor, then it became associated with the various norse themes in scandinavia where it got the raindeer and beard and hair and trees etc., and then Coca~Cola got ahold of him and turned him into the guy we all know today! :D Thank you Coca~Cola!

Santa Claus From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As an example, Don Feder, president of Jews Against Anti-Christian Defamation, complains about a "politically correct purging of Christmas from our culture."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Claus

Christian opposition to Santa Claus .... Despite Santa Claus's mixed Christian roots, he has become a secular representation of Christmas. As such, a number of Christian churches dislike the secular focus on Santa Claus and the materialist focus that present-receiving gives to the holiday.

She sounds like that interferring meddlesome cow that complained about that play which showed US-Italians in a 'bad light'. Mainly because they were old Mafia dons who were giving food to orphans.
There was a thread about a couple of weeks back.

I really hope some random Mayan stands up in the middle of Apocalypto and starts screaming "I hate Jews, they caused the world's problems!" and then the movie continues about its merry way. That would be the most hysterical thing ever.

I've said it before, and I'll say it lots of times again: political correctness is the downfall of civilization. On the other hand, school christmas parties can be plenty fun without santa; it's the easter bunny that's important.
