Ok, I know it isn't anything like you get up north, but you have to remember Oklahoma is considered the south. We just don't have the equipment to deal with this kind of stuff. I've been housebound for two days as it started out with freezing rain and sleet on Wednesday night. By Thursday morning, we had about an inch of ice and sleet on everything. Thursday afternoon the snow started and continued into the early hours of Friday morning.

All the roads are a mess with snow on them and cars and trucks stuck and abandoned on the roads. The turnpikes from Tulsa to Oklahoma City and from Tulsa to Missouri are shut down.

I'll stay home, sit by the fire, and enjoy my unplanned vacation.

I hope we have some snow here at Uni before we all head back home on the 15th.

There are some college rivalries that clearly need to be resolved with some massive snow battles.

Meanwhile here in New Jersey it's been unusually warm. I wore a jacket today and was sweating in the car. Had to roll down the windows. I'm sure my hangover contributed to the sweating, but still, it's December for fuck's sake!

Well look forward to the 60+ mile per hour winds later this afternoon. They should help cool you off. :p

It's been snowing all day here too, but we haven't gotten the plows out yet either. It's not enough to bother with at the moment, so we just drive through it.

The snow on the Miata is just what's fallen in the last hour or so since I got back from school.

I'm southeast of OKC. We drove over to the next little town over to have breakfast because our only cafe is closed. Next town over is only six miles but it took us 30 minutes to get there.
No pie though, their baker hasn't been in in two days.
We have about six inches of snow here. None of our local roads have been plowed or sanded. All these four-wheel drive trucks keep getting on my ass. Surely they can see I'm driving an old Oldsmobile with bad shocks. :(

You probably recommended against saying this, but damn. Oklahoma is wimpy. What's that, 3 inches? I miss my lake effect.

If you want, Michigan can send you a fleet of trucks or something.

Remember? If you have a 4 wheel drive you won't skid and you can stop just as well on ice and snow as you can on dry pavement.

Yeah, but they don't deal with that often. Their towns probably don't have the snow plows and salt trucks to handle the current weather. Plus they're just not used to driving around in it. The people in rear-wheel-drive vehicles over there are well and truly fucked. No snow experience and a car that wants to fishtail are a bad combination.

No, it's about 12 to 15 or so inches with an inch or two of sleet and an inch of ice underneah the snow. Remember we hardly ever get snow. We don't have the equipment to deal with it and people don't know how to drive on it.

JA! I got it! Thank you. I was totally unaware of the differences between Michigan and the south. I was completely certain that the entirety of america has 5 months of winter. I could have sworn they all had hundreds of plows and tons upon tons of salt, and had no inkling it could be any other way. All your persistent efforts have enlightened me, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Now shut up.

But to be honest as much as you think we are prepared for snow the plows never made it within a mile of my place in the first two days after a snow. Ever

No worries it will have melt half be driven off the road by the day after the snow

Salt and sand don't work when the temperature is below 24 degrees F and it is sleeting so hard it covers up the salt and sand. Besides, they only have enough equipment for the major roads, and we had blizzard conditions last night. :(

Nah, I'm going to France to work on my degree (which is a BA in French, of all things). I did spend about a week in Barcelona once. It was really nice, but I'm quite fond of France.

It's funny when I tell people that, and then tell them that I used to be in the military. That usually confuses them, but when I tell them I was in Iraq and I like France it almost kills them :p

Why does sand have a temperature barrier?

That being said they still put it down here even when it is below zero. Salt may not be able to lower the freezing point of water below 24 degrees F but that does not mean it is not effective in AIR temp's below 24 F

LOL. "The Great Snow Storm"... that's a below normal snowfall up here.

If the roads are frozen over, poor some gravel on em! Good ol' Northern ingenuity.

Also... abandoned vehicles? What? Up here, your vehicle isn't stuck until you can no longer see the sun in the snow.

HAHAHAHAHAHA! and a LOL! to boot.

Sorry, smunks, but when there is ice like that, you really need to put on the break.

Also, for future reference, I have found that in my many experiences when driving up a steep iced incline, in a car that has no place driving up an incline et al, the best way to do so is to get a "running start" of about 40 miles an hour. Just pray to god you'll have enough traction to stop. :p

That's pretty much how I got out of my driveway today. We don't have a ton of snow, but my Miata isn't very big, so that little bit of snow was still an obstacle.

Well, that's half the fun, Smunkee.

You haven't lived until you have stopped less than inch from the garage after flooring it a drive. It's great fun.

Of course, if you don't time it right, you'll start spinning out of control/crash through the garage/start moving backwards... but that's the other half of the fun.
