Damn freezing rain, sleet, and snow.

Woke up this morning at 5AM abd there was 1/2 inch of ice and sleet on the car, truck, and road. I did the wise thing. I called my boss, left a message I was taking a vacation day, and went back to bed.

I got up again about 7AM and it has been sleeting all day. This afternoon and into the evening we are supposed to get about a foot of snow on top of the ice and sleet.

Oklahoma does not have a lot of equipment to clear the roads. People don't know how to drive on ice and snow here. It is common knowledge in Oklahoma that if you have a four wheel drive you can not skid on ice or snow and can stop on ice or snow just like on dry pavement so it is OK to drive 60 or 65 MPH.

Damn rain, sleet, and snow. Should I take another vacation day tomorrow or tough it out and drive to work?

my back door is frozen shut and I can't get it opened to let the dog back in from pooping, I am about to have to bundle up and go around the long way to the yard.

I don't know where you work, but unless they plan to add some serious hazardous duty pay I'd just call in. A job is generally not worth your life.

I'm sitting around cuddling the cats. My roomie went in to work this morning, but I tried to talk him out of it. It's a 35 mile drive mostly on the little two lane country highways. Not that I-40 will be much better.

Good luck. Oklahoma roads suck at the best of times.

when I let him out the door was fine, when he was ready to come back in, it won't open, it won't budge at all.

Looking at it though, I think maybe it's just got snow and debris in the track and maybe not actually frozen shut....

I think when meteorologists use warning it means that something has been spotted. Where a watch just means the conditions are right for something to happen, but hasn't been actually seen yet... but be on the look out.

There's no sense in putting yourself in harm's way. If the roads are really that bad, your boss should understand. That said, you could wait until the weather clears a little, later in the day and see if the roads are navigable.

Of course, I see Smunkee using the word "blizzard" and that tells me you wouldn't be out of line taking another day. A couple three, four years ago we had a storm that dumped three feet of heavy, wet snow on Denver and I stayed home there days.

oh, we have like snow, and ice blowing around, high winds, I can't see across the street very well because of the snow in my way, it's like heavy.......

the snow in the back yard was grazing my dog's tummy and he is 3 feet tall. I think it's just accumulated back there though, because weather man says we got 8 inches of snow

EDIT: I just got my dog warm enough to let me pick the ice out of his little toes, should I let him back out to poop and pee or let him go in the garage and clean it up? I don't want him to be colder than he has to be, but he won't let me put his shoes on.........

Call him, tell him that the roads are already getting bad and that you are worried, and tell him that you are out of rock salt so it might be best it he stops to buy soome more, and that it'd be wise to get the food now, so you're not trapped in your house with no food.

And that you are worried that he could be driving in horrible conditions if he leaves when he usually does.

He'll be fine. My roommate in Minnesota had a black lab who went out in heavy snow and -30 temps to do his business without "shoes" or a sweater. Most people in cold climates let their dogs out in winter with no ill effects. Just don't leave him out all night. ;)

I thought I said something very similar to that, he is stressed out though, his department has 17 people out (out of 20) and so in addition to trying to manage he has to do work to make up for all of those and he is off tomorrow so he was trying to get stuff done for that.....and I shouldn't have called right?

Well, it's beautiful here today. It's in the mid-70s mostly sunny. Plenty of Blue Sky. A heck of a lot better than last week. It was only having highs of mid-50s to lower 60s and the lows were in the lower 40s brrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I had to turn my heat on at the house and my truck. Today, though, much better. I actually had to turn the AC back on at the house and I used AC in my truck today. Last week I was forced to wear jeans this week back to normal wearing shorts and short sleeves. :D

Yesterday, we got an ice storm. The roads weren't too bad when I was on them, but by the time the news started, it was bad enough to cause accidents. This morning, my street was way too bad to risk it, so I called in. Now, it's snowing like crazy! The odds of me getting to work tomorrow are almost zero! And while I don't mind an occasional "snow day", I hate being trapped in my house two days in a row!!

n.

1.
1. A violent snowstorm with winds blowing at a minimum speed of 35 miles (56 kilometers) per hour and visibility of less than one-quarter mile (400 meters) for three hours.

Happy anniversary. :fluffle: How many years? My wife and I made the big 38 in July. :p
only 6 years, but most people said we wouldn't make it 6 months so it's nice to rub their noses in it every year, besides we won a bet that we would make it past 5 years and are getting a free vacation out of it.

Good looking dog. He/she can probably take it for a pee/poop break. Some dogs actually like the cold and play in the snow. If you go out with him he will probably finish quicker, then you can both go in and sit in front of the fire.
yeah, I have been taking him out the front all day so I didn't have to deal with the back door, now I just pop up the garage door and go out with him, freaking dog........he did let me put his boots on this last time though.

Not to be a spoiler but, my wife called me at work the day before the storm (yesterday) early in the morning (about 9AM) and asked if there was anything I wanted at the store. She told me she heard about the storm comming and wanted to get some groceries. So, I presume you only have one car, or you and hubby didn't know about the storm before it hit?

Here, have some cookies and hot chocolate. :fluffle:

we knew, I was supposed to take him to work Wednesday and go to the store, but the kids were sick, so I didn't, and he forgot to go today, so we are without food.......I hear it's going to be better in the morning though so I am heading out hopefully after the snow trucks and before the traffic.
