Plan my Holidays!

Okay, I can't stand another summer in this godforsaken place boring or drinking myself stupid.

I need to get away. I've got holidays from now until early March, and I've got a few dollars stashed away somewhere safe.

I want to see the world. Europe is an ideal destination, just because I've got a German passport and visa won't be an issue.

But that's not a given, I'm open for other suggestions. Especially ones where I save on accomodation by living with someone from NSG. ;)

Where should I go? Only realistic options please, I'm actually serious.

I'm not gonna spend two months in one city.

I also always wanted to see Japan. Or indeed almost every place you see when you stand at an airport and look at where all the flights go. :(

The east coast would interest me. Especially NYC.

And maybe a study trip into the Bible Belt. Easier to get there than Northern Pakistan, but you get much the same people. :D

Meh, hang out on a beach in the sun. I guess living in Wellington I don't get very much of that.

Never been to NYC. I personally like the West Coast. Especially Seattle and San Francisco. If you're on the East Coast, gotta check out Boston. Very fun city.

As for the bible belt, just mingling with the locals in the small towns in fun. I do it frequently when I storm chase. They're often very friendly and open.

Seems like the most likely option, doesn't it. There's been a distinct lack of planning on my behalf for these holidays, so trips to the US or Japan are gonna suffer from that.

I like travelling by train. Maybe flying to Germany to meet my family, and then see all the places...London, Paris, Rome, Stockholm etc

I always like the Lonely Planet: Six Degrees (http://www.lonelyplanet.com/lptv/) shows. Is there any way to actually do something like that without being from TV? I mean, I've got contacts in many cities thanks to NSG - but could one thing lead to another like in the shows?

Google 'interrail' or something. Interrail card is like a train ticket for europe for a month. Lets you jump on a train in Paris, and end up in Prague, for example. Lots of young travellers use it, and it comes highly reccomended.

Sicily's very nice. Lots of greek temples and stuff. I understand people (at least the people of australia and america etc.) get off on seeing things more than a couple of hundred years old that aren't made of soil.

What kind of things do you like? This is going to affect the sort of places you're going to want to visit.

Just checked the website...it's only for people who live in Europe.

Big cities, and meeting the people who live in them.

Like I said, my ideal holiday would be taken straight out of Lonely Planet: Six Degrees.

Okay, right now I'm thinking:

Hamburg (family and stuff)
Berlin (cuz I haven't been in ages and it changed a lot)
Stuttgart (because I need to visit the car companies and try to find out how to land a job there...and I wanna look at their museums)
Modena & St. Agata (Ferrari and Lamborghini live there)
Rome (because I've never been)
Paris (same)
London (same)

Any more? (like Dublin? I'd like to see Ireland)

Would it make much sense to go to the Nürburgring in Winter? Methinks probably not.

Now I need people who live there or near there who can show me around. I don't just wanna sit there by myself. And none of my mates here have the money or time to spare to go with me.

I've always wanted to know, which months constitute a full academic year down there in Australia?

It changes by a few weeks for different unis and from year to year, but my first semester goes from late february to probably around late june. Then in late july the second semester starts and goes to mid-november.

Pretty much the same as here in Brazil, except we start a couple of weeks later (mid March) and finish a couple of weeks later(early December) - this allows us to get carnival in during the holidays.

I've got to say New York City, but without me there it's going to lose a lot of it's coolness.

*is pointing to my location*

:)

Actually, I would say somewhere in Europe; to me it sounds way more exciting than New York. Being a tourist in New York is looked down at.

But... but... but... you can't spend your summer in Europe or the US because it's winter.

I'd say Chile or Brazil (south of the equator, of course). Or maybe Macchu Pichu.

If you are going to come to Brazil, go somewhere other than Rio.

Rio is very pretty to look at for a couple of days, but it is expensive, dangerous and full of tourists. Try going to the coast of Bahia, or to Florianopolis. Do something more original than Rio.

True Carnival is not the Rio or São Paulo carnival that you see in the news, it is held in places like Olinda and Salvador.

If i were you, i would fly to London England and then take the train though the channel to Paris, head move north to Amsterdam and see the canals before going to Hamburg Germany, experience the culture then head off to the city where your family lives. Go down south to the swiss Alps spend a day of two sking in the alps at Genovia, head down to Pisa,Italy and see the famous leaning tower. Go to Rome and view where the capital of an ancient empire. While you are there, head to the Vatican and scream at the Pope! Take a train upwards to venice and go to the City of Canals. End your trip at Salzburg, Austria and fly back home

So its London > Paris > Amsterdam > Hamburg > Berlin(?) > Genovia > Pisa > Rome > Vatican > Venice > Salzburg

I will defer to the expert on Brazil, I'll just point out that as long as he stays south of Macapá, it's good.

(Yeah, I agree Rio is overdone, but it is interesting if you have never been there and is a good starting point for the rest of the amazing hugeness that is Brazil)
