I've been thinking about buying some type of video game like Playstation 2 or something. I'm actually looking for something reasonably priced both the system and games. Any recommedations?

Consoles will suck your time and turn you into a games addict...

Games addicts suffer much more than most other addicts.

Smokers lose 5 mins off the END of their life everytime they have a smoke.

Gamers lose 1/2 an hour at best off the BEST bits of their life every time they have a game.

Say NO to games, say YES to life

Katamari Damacy & We Love Katamari (http://katamari.namco.com/) are both excellent games for the PS2.

Actually, I don't have my own PC.

I suggest you get a PC before you get a console. They have a lot more variety and backwards compatability. They are more useful than consoles in general anyway.

Wiii!

Or, like, a Gamecube for about 80 bucks. Actually, even a DS. Cool games there as well.

If you get a PC, try Knights of the Old Republic.

Computers are so expensive though. Then you have to buy tons of software and spyware and anti-viruses and firewalls and lots more stuff. It all adds up awfully fast.

Get an Xbox, then buy Halo: Combat Evolved, and play it 'till you win. Then do it again.

If you still question the wisdom, play it again. Then buy Halo 2.

I only paid for my hardware and copy of Windows XP.

Everything else is either because I'm particpating in a beta test or I have freeware.

On my computer... (a small cross-section just to give you an idea of how easy it is to have a ood computer without spending a lot on software & applications)

PAID FOR SOFTWARE/GAMES
- Windows XP Pro, with SP2
- Sims 2 (and all the expansions)
- Guild Wars (plus Factions and Nightfall)

FREEWARE
- Avast! Anti-virus
- Sygate Firewall
- Spybot Search & Destroy
- HijackThis!
- Silk Road
- Azerus (BitTorrent client)

BETA
- Microsoft Office 2007 Suite Beta

It's very easy to have a computer with software and applications you don't have to pay out the nose for.

By Wii. It has complete backwards compatibility with Gamecube.

It has a very large library old school games ready for download. (Connection required.)

It has the neatest control system ever devised by man.

It doesn't contain Spyware, adware, Viruses, Trojans, Worms, Alienware, or any other of the illions and illions of things that can go horribly horribly wrong with pc's.

Its 200 bucks compared to xbox, ps3, and the thousands of dollars it takes for a PC of quality performance. (And if you doubt quality takes money, visit www.alienware.com.)

It has the best commercials out of all the commercials on television.

And besides, Nintendo totaly PWNS anything and everything else.

Agreed,

Get a good enough PC and you can emulate any of the consoles out there. Plus there are many many more programs available. Not to mention games.

Software for pc's is often free as well. There aren't too many consoles out there that can boast that.

Great Free programs which I use:
Linux Mandrake
Spybot S&D
AVG Antivirus

Or use OpenOffice (http://www.openoffice.org/)instead of MS Office. I actually like it more, and it it free.

You don't even need to buy an operating system if you don't want to. Linux is great. I use PCLinuxOS (http://www.pclinuxos.com/news.php), bad name, but great program. And I run lots of Opensource and freeware games. The only thing I have payed for one one of my computers, is the machine itself. And with Linux, you don't need to be as unrelenting about viruses and adware, thought it is still a minor concern.

If you're looking for a cheap console you should probably take the advice of one of the people suggesting the 6th gen consoles, you could go 5th gen too if you want to.

Sega Dreamcast!!!! Cheapcheapcheap!!!

Dreamcast was highly underrated *nods*

Do PCs actually count as backwards compatible?

why bother when you have a PC?

A lot of games aren't published for PC anymore... and PCs are freakin' expensive.

Also, you don't need to know anything to use a console. PCs need some basic knowledge... although, they used to need more *reminisces back to the glory days of DOS*

You can get a Gamecube or a playstation for about 120$ I think.
There is also the Nintendo DS that you can take with you when you expect to be standing around doing nothing for a long time also ~120$

Screw the new consoles right now; the lack of any decent gaming library and the simple fact that they are currently overpriced for the average person's budget should dissuade you from purchasing even a Wii, letalone 360 or PS3. If you want to go for a gaming console, I suggest getting a PS2--which should sell for ~$99 U.S. now, I believe, or it will soon anyway--and start purchasing up a library of games for both PS1 and PS2. Keep in mind that you'll need a PS1 memory card--which can be somewhat difficult to acquire, oddly--in order to save games for a PS1, as the games cannot recognize a PS2 memory card.

A list of personal recommendations for games follows:

Ratchet and Clank
Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando
Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal
Ratchet: Deadlocked
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX
Kingdom Hearts
Kingdom Hearts II
Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid II
Metal Gear Solid III
Chrono Cross
Final Fantasy Chronicles(Final Fantasy IV & Chrono Trigger bundled; both originally SNES games, so graphics are thus accordingly. Be forwarned if you hate non-shiny graphics.)

That's just a list off the top of my head. By the way: If you do get Kingdom Hearts and its sequel, I recommend--if you have a GBA or aren't afraid of emulating--obtaining Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories as well. It's not that important, all things considered--especially seeing as how RE: CoM and Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix+ MAY be released stateside next year at some point(RE: CoM being a PS2 graphics wise remake of CoM with a couple extra scenes and stuff, and KH II FM+...well, you'll just have to read up on that one, as I still know diddly squat) in which case you might want to hold off purchasing a copy of KH II till it comes out. That, of course, presumes you like KH in the first place. As with all of these games, I recommend--if possible, you rent before you buy, if only to save you money.

Yes, yes, yes, and YES!!! :D
Such a fun series.

Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX
Whaa?! Where's FFVII? It's the best game in the series...
And I would know. I've played and beaten almost all of the main titles, with the exception of IV and III.

Kingdom Hearts
Kingdom Hearts II
Fun games. Although, I got tired of those fucking Gummi ships...

Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid II
Metal Gear Solid III
Classic.

Chrono Cross
Final Fantasy Chronicles(Final Fantasy IV & Chrono Trigger bundled; both originally SNES games, so graphics are thus accordingly. Be forwarned if you hate non-shiny graphics.)
I'd add Final Fantasy Origins and Final Fantasy Anthology. The second game is a bit lackluster, but the first game is third only to VI and VII. V is pretty fun as well...

I'd also recommend God of War and Devil May Cry.

I don't recommend Final Fantasy VII because it's a boring, extremely overrated game with a badly translated, badly written story featuring cardboard characters that I wish hadn't appeared in the abundance they did in the Kingdom Hearts series. (Or at least don't have Sephiroth be an option boss two games in a row, nevermind any bloody AC scenes. )

As for the PC Game market, it's as strong as ever. Mind you, much of it goes unheard of due to the sheer number of console games out there.

a) It's far better than VIII. At least 90% of the protagonist's lines aren't "...".
b) Badly translated? The console version, maybe, but the PC version was translated about as well as most anime has been for the past few years... Yeah, thinking about it, I've played both versions, and the lines for the console version are a bit worse.
c) It's the same story that they've been using since the first game, and have used in every game since.
d) Meh. I preffered the FFVII characters over the Disney ones.
e) FFVII was better than its successors. If nothing else, it didn't have the crappy character designs of IX, it didn't have the crappy Junction system of VIII, and it didn't have the major, devastating flaws of X (e.g. Sphere Grid, no World Map, the awful voice acting, the trying-too-hard-to-be-cool character designs, the underwhelming plot... the list goes on...)

As for the PC Game market, it's as strong as ever. Mind you, much of it goes unheard of due to the sheer number of console games out there.

Outside of Medieval II: Total War, nothing really great is coming out... *shrug*
And I was mostly referencing the fact the Call of Duty 3 will not be released for PC, even though Call of Duty 2 was a great game, and, IIRC, a great success on the PC...

The last-gen consoles are pretty cheap now (I bought my Gamecube for around $60). Both the PS2 and the GameCube have some good games.

Great PS2 games (IMO):
- Silent Hill series
- Fahrenheit (or Indigo Prophecy in the US)
- Sly Raccoon series
- Guitar Hero I and II

Great GameCube games:
- Resident Evil 4
- Killer7
- Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
- Super Smash Bros. Melee
- Metroid Prime I and II
- Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
- Paper Mario

All in all, I personally have had a lot more fun with the Gamecube than the PS2, but that all depends on taste. Try to figure out what kinds of games would interest you most.
