it seems to be common knowledge around here that I am......what's it that my husband says? oh, right, "flighty". I tend to have wide and varied interests and the gall to pursue them all........briefly, and then move on.

I tell my friends who are always surprised at my wide variety of life experiences that I am an amature at life, sure I have done a lot of completely unrelated stuff, but I am not really really good at any of it.......:(

what's that other thing my husband says? Jack of all trades, master of none?

anyway, what have you guys never done that you plan to do at some point?

Smunkee's list of things I plan to do within the next 5 years

graduate from college
buy my dream house (read buy the land and build it)
rebuild my Jeep (working on that now)
go to Vegas!!!!!!! (also working on that now)

it's 15 years old. and runs better than my neighbors newer SUV, although I did tweak it.......a lot......so it gets better gas mileage than my mom's compact car.

Ride First Class

It's so very nice. I once rode first class from Adana, Turkey to Bangor, Maine and it was great. I'm 190 cm tall, so riding in coach makes me want to chop off my legs, especially on a ridiculously long flight like that.

Have you ever tried flying "economy plus" on United? I haven't myself, but it looks like substantially more leg room than the rest of the coach cabin. I don't think the price difference is too huge, either.

I agree, papillons are very cute. One of my neighbours in my apartment complex has one, and it's very sweet. I don't think I'd ever want one though, as this one seems very hyperactive and its owners say that's typical of the breed.

Mastiffs are great dogs! One of my friends when I was growing up had two Brazilian mastiffs, they were the sweetest (and hugest) dogs ever. My boyfriend seems taken with Corgis for some reason, I just think they look funny. Like their legs were chopped off at the knee. :p

I'm too cheap/poor to pay for more than coach. I only flew first class that time because it was taxpayer funded. The only other times I flew first class were when I got bumped up because I was going home on leave from Iraq and happened to be wearing my desert uniform and lugging my body armor and helmet around.

I'm flying coach on Iberia to Paris this spring, but I'm used to having very little legroom. I flew from Frankfurt, Germany to Detroit on coach more than a few times, so I've learned to handle the desire to gnaw my legs off to an extent. However, I'm not sure I could have handled for the flight from Turkey to Maine.

The economy plus thing is exactly the same as coach, just with more leg room. Iirc, when I flew from California to DC last week, when I checked in it was an extra $5 to be bumped from normal economy class to economy plus. I don't know if other airlines have similar services though. It's not something I'm ever going to have to worry about, as I'm substantially shorter than you are. :p

I always feel bad for the super tall people I see flying coach. I usually book aisle seats so that I can stretch my legs out into the aisle (and for ease of getting to the restroom), but if I'm sitting in the same row as someone really tall I always offer to switch so they can stretch out at least a little bit more.

absolutely! i don't have anyone to go with as of yet. it's a rally where you drive a car worth less than £100 from plymouth on the south coast of england to banjul in gambia and then you auction off the car for charity at the end. i've wanted to do it ever since i saw an article about it in top gear magazin a couple of years ago, everyone thinks i'm mad though and i'll probably have to wait til i have some money and some basic mechanical knowledge.

By 2012, I hope to have:

Graduated college
Come up with a descent answer for when someone asks me why I majored in English and minored in Philosophy
Become fluent in German
Finally gotten paid to have something published, as opposed to offering my wordage for free to these silly beatnik, campus publications
Been in a fight that I can tell people about proudly (ie, it was for a good reason, with socially acceptable odds, and I won)

And, for extra credit, by 2017 I hope to have:
Taken over Canada using only an electric tooth brush and a pack of dachshunds
Been the first (and last) American to burn the mummified corpse of Vladmir Lenin for warmth
Melted the statue of liberty down and used the copper to make small Statue of Liberty replicas, which shall be sold to Japanese Tourists

haha! yes indeed! the best fun driving i ever had was on dirt roads in new zealand in a car i bought for NZ$600 that had bald tires and broken shocks. had to call out the AA twice, once because i had a blow-out on the one bit of motorway they have over there and discovered that the wheel nuts were rusted on, the second when the radiator exploded after having got lost (i had to describe what i could see around me to the operator so they could get someone out to find me!). by the time i get to do this rally i intend to be significantly less useless though, don't worry :p

I only have three grand plans for the rest of my life so far, and only a 3rd within a 5 year horizon.

I want to find a cheap'ish flat in Berlin with my girl, 'cos my country's too racist to allow us to be together. I feel like I'm living in the III Reich sometimes.. Fucking nazis. It's like one of those nightmares you just can't wake up from. It's not even xenophobia. If it was, I wouldn't be living here. No, it's just plain old "She's a darkie!"

The other day I cursed myself for almost half a second for falling in love with a Muslim. Now I'm cursing both myself & this fucked up country for making me capable of thinking something that utterly twisted. I feel dirty on the inside, like I've been fucking raped or something. All the irrational fear, hatred & bloodyminded ignorance is really fucking getting to me... And I better stop ranting now, or I'll get banned.

graduate from college
buy my dream house (read buy the land and build it)
rebuild my Jeep (working on that now)
go to Vegas!!!!!!! (also working on that now)
film my movie (finishing up the screen play now)
[/LIST]

College is great, but you'll need to adapt to listening to new ideas and ways of looking at things.

I hope you're not thinking of 10 acres and a horse in some rural area. We have too many of those now.

Vegas??? By what I know of your beliefs, I would suggest Branson.

Anyway, it's always good to have goals.

At this stage of my life, I would just like to get enough put away for a decent retirement.

Take a deep breath, my friend. It sounds like you're pretty mad about this-And I cant say I blame you.
Dont have an embolism thinking about it right now.I can survive fleeing a racist regime, but when it gets right into my bones, making me regret falling in love, there's just not a fucking thing I can do. No amount of deep breaths will ever make me feel less filthy. I can't help you with the other stuff, I'm afraid, and it's not like my country is so much better, but this city is full of cheap flats, so you'll totally manage that goal.I know, the choice fell on Berlin for that very reason. And despite some 30-40% of the German voting public being closet-fascists (big survey a couple of months ago, don't have a link), your country isn't anywhere near as fucked up as mine. It's like claiming Sweden is as warlike as America. There's no comparison.

Hmm... not all that much. I accomplished a lot of what I wanted to do by now, but I'm sure I'll eventually think of new things to do. Until then :

Get an aquarium with sea horses
Exhibit my art in real life instead of only online
maybe even sell some of my paintings
Have a nice holiday next year, maybe in Italy or Corsica

If you do start a martial art you'll find that your general confidence about day-to-day situations improves greatly. I know it did for me. Oh and the training will get you there on touching the toes!;)

Top of the list at the moment, a friend of mine does Taekwondo, but It's a 36 minute drive minimum :( (no way my dad'll do that twice a week). The only other option is the train at 10.00 at night which doesn't seem too appealing, though it does tie in with the wanting to be more independant.

vegas is only fun if you get into the spirit of committing lots of sins

drinking, gambling, carousing, going to strip clubs, dressing up slutty and going to one of the cutting edge clubs, wandering around drunk in public, staying up all night playing blackjack, that kind of thing

so, to answer your question...

youd have to leave the kids home.

I used to be like that for most of my life. It just for some reason changed once I had settled in in Ireland. Besides, I still have to take regular trips home, the next one being scheduled for christmas. So I do get to travel, only the destination isn't what I would call exciting ;)

I have no idea what I'm doing in the future. My plans are very short term at the moment. And very inexpensive, seeing that I'm broke and likely to remain that way for the foreseeable future.
Plans include getting the cat fixed so she doesn't drop anymore kittens on me.
Getting a kitchen trashcan with a lid on it so other cat will quit emptying it.
Help my Mom get ready for the big family pre-Christmas get together.
Get tags on the car. Already expired.

when you are a fan like I am or you are married to a fan like my husband is, it's def. worth planning the trip around. We are getting to go for very cheap, free hotel, free shows, free food, all we have to do is get there which is half of the fun anyway........ROAD TRIP!

besides, I don't find the "adult fun" very interesting.

when you are away from the kids for the first time since the first one was born, i dont suppose you need that much entertainment anyway. just being adults together instead of mom and dad is probably enough

if youre willing to sit through a time share pitch, they will give you tickets for one of the big shows on the strip that cost around $100/ticket.

Next five years, eh? Well, I'd be pleased as punch if I could accomplish even a few of these things during that time:

- Recover from my current health problems
- Get (or at least start) my MFA
- Alternatively, get (or at least start) my MA
- Move back to New England
- Recover from past emotional trauma sufficiently such that I no longer feel I need to remain celibate
- Get my teaching certificate
- Get a job I don't hate, working for employers who aren't sleazeballs
- Travel abroad again
- Find another really, really good choir to join
(and the real pipe dream)
- Maybe, maybe, maybe try to put out a solo CD. Maybe. Possibly.

-- move in with my boyfriend (if he's up for it, of course... but it'd be nice...)
