How did you do at school or uni?

I just checked my final results for uni this past semester.

The courses seemed rather easy, so I was aiming for something ridiculously good. In Australia, your grades go from 7 being the highest (85%+) to a 1 being a complete fail and a 4 being a pass (don't ask me why).

I was hoping for all 7s this semester, which might have been a bit extreme. I revised that down to 3 7s and a 6...until the group assignment came along.

Group Assingments are a bit like socialism: the good ones get punished for the bad ones' incompetence. :p
We only scraped through with about 51% on that assignment, which ruined my chances in that course*.

Then I had a bunch of essay-type final exams, which aren't my speciality (I much prefer math-type stuff for an exam).

Long story short: 7s for Business Law and Cost-Benefit Analysis, a 6 for Advanced Macroeconomics (thanks to the essay format of the final) and a 5 for Managing International Business Operations (the group assignment, another essay format and just generally a rather badly organised course).

It's pretty good, and most people would be happy with those marks, but I can't help but feel disappointed nonetheless.

How did you go? Do you put too much pressure on yourselves?

*Case in Point: My average for individual assignments is somewhere around 87%, it's 76% for group assignments.

Actually, all uni's here seem to use a totally different system. The Monash one is: Fail, Near Pass, Pass, Credit, Distinction, High Distinction. And Melbourne University has wacky things like H1s and H2s and the like, whatever they mean.

I should find out my results in 5 minutes or so. I was aiming for a distinction average (70%+) but throughout my course i've been 1 or 2 percent below that level. Eh.

(edit - and on a side note, i'm expecting one of my highest marks this semester to be a groupwork assignment. ;))

In one of my final year group projects we had a guy who did NO work at all.
We told him to work or we would kick him out of the group.
He thought we were bluffing.
We went to the lecturer, told him this person had done no work which meant we had to do more and that we did not think he deserved the grade.
The lecturer agreed and gave him Zero.

Nice. Two distinctions, a high distinction, and a credit (1% off a distinction). Not a bad way to finish my degree.

Yay!

So you're done now? What's your degree and final GPA? And are you gonna do postgrad stuff?

Because really, it seems like postgrad is the only thing that the GPA really matters for. As long as you pass everything, you get the piece of paper anyways.

About as good as my natural talents alone can get me, so something around 3.4-3.5 (On the basis of the US 4.0 scale, that is).

I slack horribly.

Just a BA, majoring in Politics/International Studies. Haven't figured out my average marks yet. Probably just below a distinction.

I've thought about postgrad stuff, but postgrad arts stuff is generally only for people who want to teach or become academics. I'm not sure if that's what I really want. I think i'll take next year off and try and find work...if I can't, well, i'll go back and see what I can do - I might be able to convince them to let me into honours with these marks. :) On the other hand, i'm only 20, and I can probably afford to relax for a year somewhere along the line and travel...

Fairly well. Most of my first and second years passed the listening portion of the exam, which is good because we had really been concentrating on building up their ability to understand spoken English and pick out information.

My third years are in trouble though, many were having a very rough time with the mock entrance exam we gave and a lot just out right panicked at the listening test. We're going to have to go back and pound that puppy again.

What? Doing well at school takes on a different meaning when you're the teacher. ;)

You all use silly grading systems.

Unfortunately employers tend to stop reading my CV at the 3rd part and never see the masters.

Here in the US we generally have a 4.0 scale. M undergrad GPA was a 3.41 and my Grad GPA was a 3.93. Figure out what the relative percentage would be if you based that on a 100 percentage point scale. I was very proud of myself considering I double majored and had a concentrated Master's program. I also went to a wonderful school in NJ that begins with a P. Donald Rumsfeld is a fellow Alumni, although I'm not so sure if that's something to take pride in.

I'm still in high school, but first semester exams are in two weeks. I was really disappointed at myself on the progress report, but as long as I bring my grade in AP Chem up to an A by the end of the quarter in two weeks, I'll be fine.

AP Psychology- 97% A
AP English- 99% A
AP Latin- 98% A
Dual-Enrollment Pre-Calculus- 98% A
AP American History- 97% A
AP Chemistry- 89% B:( (Just one point away from being an A, but at least it's only a progress report and so doesn't count for anything. I'm ashamed of myself, nonetheless.)
Physics I Honors- 100% A

I did very well in high school and very well in university. When I was in high school, I put a ton of pressure on myself to get good grades and do a ton of extracurricular stuff because of the colleges I wanted to apply to. My parents also pressured me to do well. By the time I got to university, I was pretty burned out, and didn't do so well at first. But that turned around by the time I graduated. :)

I don't remember learning anything really though, it's just like I already knew it, I found out later that I was at least 4 grade levels ahead of my peers which explains why I got into so much trouble........I was hopelessly bored.

I found out a few weeks back that they wanted to skip me to highschool when I was in the 5th grade but my mom wouldn't let them......one more reason to loathe her. .

Well, that's mostly because up north you have to deal with school and winter!

I went to what is now USF's Sarasota campus (New College). Started back in 1969, threw away my bras and stopped shaving my legs, it was the best six years I ever spent (though I admit, not all of it was at school). We didn't exactly have grades, either, everything as pass/fail. Transcript time for people who transferred or went on to grad school was fun for the professors. I don't know if they offer what you might want academically, Chandelier, but how many places could you go where the library was built by one Ringling Brother and one of the other ones lived next door in a huge, over-the-top mansion that's now a museum? Oh, and the John & Mabel Ringling Museum of Art is just down the road, with a pretty good collection of baroque painting.

Oddly enough, I'm getting high A's (in the nineties) for two of my classes and pretty much failing the other two this semester. Oh well - redemption will come with final exams. It's my policy to bomb midterms and ace finals - I find I have better self-respect that way, and marks end up a bit more satisfactory. My fifth curse - english - I'm not sure, but I'll probably end up with an A- since I can't be bothered woith doing the fuckloads of busy-work we get asigned.

And congrats to Kanabia for wrapping up his degree respectably!

When you discover that the school you've been attending via correspondence since 1998 isn't even a real school, and it's just a business that only cares about the status quo, you suddenly realise that none of it mattered, and finally decide to drop out of school altogether.

Because if you're stuck in a rut because of something that people told you had to be done, what does that do for you? Absolutely nothing. And so what if you made exceptional grades? It didn't matter. Not one bit.

And it never will.

There is somethng to be said for putting distance between yourself and the old homestead, making that break. I've never seen the Tampa campus, it's likely to have changed completely from what it was in the 70's anyway, just as Sarasota itself has changed tremendously ever since they finished I-75 down to Venice. In my day it was still a fairly sleepy retirement town.

Well, in elementary school, I was at the top of my class every year, and thus, I have a ton of cheap plastic trophies. I went to middle school for one year, and then got into the most competitive public high school in The USA, where I've been getting incredibly odd grades for the last five years. I don't work hard at all, but I can get A's in certain classes, but I also get D's in certain classes (Latin). However, starting next week, I will go to a normal suburban high school for the end of my senior year and hopefully I will do better then before.

I've never seen the Tampa campus, it's likely to have changed completely from what it was in the 70's anyway, just as Sarasota itself has changed tremendously ever since they finished I-75 down to Venice. In my day it was still a fairly sleepy retirement town.

I'm sure you'll do fine (and don't believe that crap about Northerners being so much smarter ... that's all it is, crap).

All right. Thank you. I wasn't sure whether to believe it or not. Thanks.:)

I have a 4.0 average (the highest possible) so far, but only on 15 credits, out of 120, and at an easy school.

Pitt?

hmmm...the arch-nemesis of that wonderful school in Pennsylvania that (almost) begins with a P? :D

Indeed, but the loathing is not coming from me. I don't get into that whole rivalry thing too often. I find that personal pride is more important than pride in a place you pay a price tag of a Lexus for every year to go. Thank God I got a scholarship or I would've be home at community. Playing football and baseball for the Tigers was a hell of a lot of fun as well. Sports tend to take the dullness away from the terribly demanding course work.

show-off :p

Go Tigers! When you earn something it's always good to be proud. This explains why those who have things handed to them will never be fulfilled in life. They always know they are not worthy of what they have. Anyone fit that description you know? Maybe sitting in the oval office going "WTF was I thinking!?"

My in major/masters grades were all perfect scores. I graduated with a 4.0 in the major and 4.0 for the masters

Though I only got a 3.8 as a total gpa in under-grad work

Some of the more useless classes I did not try as hard as I should have

;)Yep. Pitt's one of the better schools here, though obviously not as difficult as CMU.

Yeah, Carnegie-Mellon's definitely up there. But if not Pitt or CMU...where are you? I'm having a hard time coming up with other schools in Pittsburgh. :(
