So an empire is a country with separate nations contained within it and now that Quebec is a separate nation within Canada, does that make us an empire?

I mean, wouldn't that be freaking sweet?

Empires must be formed by force, IIRC.

em‧pire

1. a group of nations or peoples ruled over by an emperor, empress, or other powerful sovereign or government: usually a territory of greater extent than a kingdom, as the former British Empire, French Empire, Russian Empire, Byzantine Empire, or Roman Empire.
2. a government under an emperor or empress.
3. (often initial capital letter) the historical period during which a nation is under such a government: a history of the second French empire.
4. supreme power in governing; imperial power; sovereignty: Austria's failure of empire in central Europe.
5. supreme control; absolute sway: passion's empire over the mind.
6. a powerful and important enterprise or holding of large scope that is controlled by a single person, family, or group of associates: The family's shipping empire was founded 50 years ago.

So techincally Canada falls into the first definition, if only just barely.

Hush up! I have the almighty Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empire) on my side...

"Generally, they [scholars] may define an empire as a state that extends dominion over areas and populations distinct culturally and ethnically from the culture/ethnicity at the center of power. Like other states, an empire maintains its political structure at least partly by coercion."

So Canada has the multiple ethnic component part, but not the coercion part.

Actually, they just need a ruling Monarch/Emperor. The Habsburgs of Austria-Hungary at one point pretty much ruled Europe my marriage. By the same token, the Kingdom of Spain formed via marriage.

Yep, which is why we should start referring to our country as the Canadian Empire.

I mean, doesn't that sound sweet?

They don't even need to be headed by an Emperor/Empress. All that needs to be in place for an empire to exist by definition is one country ruling largely over the other.

As for Canada, some would say Quebec is the one ruling over the rest of Canada.

One of the original proposed names for Canda was the Kingdom of Canada. It was shot down though, they thought it would have provoked the United States. But the Canadian Empire does have a certain flare to it.

It does, maybe people will take us more seriously if we start calling ourselves that.

Many countries in America are multinational and geographically large, but I wouldn't say they are Empires because they lack a strong leader for the role of an emperor and at least aspire to some degree of democracy.

You don't get ellected Emperor of the U.S. you move to California and start wearing an old nineteenth century style military uniform and handing out your own money. It also helps to pose with the tourists and to catch the interest of the Sandman;)
