So, in your humble opinions (oh' wise peoples of NSG) do you think that, in the national decision making processes of a majority of the worlds nations, that nationalist or economic interests are the primary motivating factor.

I think ultimately most national decisions boil down to the state giving what some group of people want at the expense of others. So, most likely, economic.

Mercantilism, I think. Which is sorta both, but I go with economic.

I tend to think that economic factors are more important, in the long run. As, domestic populations far prefer to be well off and comfortable rather than super-powerful in the military element. Look to the US-USSR Cold War contest for an example.

Economic, but the two are interrelated; the leadership pursues the national economic interest in part due to nationalism.

They can decide who gets how much money and what they get to do with it, effectively putting other governmental organizations at their mercy.

Remember the golden rule: "He who has the gold makes the rules." ;)

In the end, politics is about moving bits of colored paper around.

I dunno. I'm all for free trade, yet keeping my countrymen employed is important, so I wouldn't object to tariffs on certain things (industry is the only thing I'd support).

It it were purely economic we would have system of free trade. I voted nationalistic, which is certainly unfortunate.
