I bought Medieval II yesterday. Great game, lots of fun.

I chose to play the Holy Roman Empire for my first game. And what do I notice? All the people talk funny!

And not just funny funny, but making me cringe funny.

"Leave no Auslanders alive!"
"Praise Gott! We have taken the city!"

The same thing happened with Company of Heroes. The things the Germans say in that game are utterly ridiculous. It's a total bastardisation.

If I pay $90 for a computer game...is it too much to ask to get someone who speaks German to do the voice-overs if you insist on having people speak German in the game? I mean, there are something like 130 million of us out there!

Does this bother anyone else?

I prefer the characters to talk in their own native languages rather than trying to speak in English for the mass gaming and game-consuming populus, who are predominantly English-speaking.

You know this reminds of a story my grandfather told me once about watching a POW movie from WWII, where one of the german guards when pointing to escaping prisoners, said something in German that he said translated as "Look at the red baloon." Or something like that, I just remember the quote what the movie was other then being a WWII war flick is not as clear.

Well there are mods for ROME Total War that worked on adding native languages (by pro linguists nonetheless) but I find in the end that I don't care. In the end, it's a good bit of humor.

They're so difficult to get here. But I do enjoy the Gothic- and Anno Series.

But that's not the point. The point is that if they want their guys to speak German (which is fine, it makes sense - even though the language spoken by the peoples of the Holy Roman Empire in 1100 wouldn't have much in common with modern German), then why not do it properly?

I haven't had a chance to check yet, but they probably bastardise other languages too. I just don't see the point.

According to wiki, anyways. Hell, if people have a bit of an accent, I wouldn't mind.

But the actual sentences they put into the games just annoy the living shit out of me.
And the accents they do give the Germans in Medieval II all have something of Arnie about them. Which is a little silly.

That being said, the English faction seems to have pretty good speakers. But that was to be expected.

I guess they just want to make sure. The law in Germany (and probably a few other countries) says "no glorification", and some games might be close to that line at times.

And in some cases you could even make a case that it really isn't necessary, since the swastika was a NSDAP symbol, and the Wehrmacht for example generally didn't have much to do with it.

Yes, the accents in that game are fucking terrible. Not just the Germans, all of them. Riddled with stereotypes, too. The French generals make me laugh (they're the only faction i've played extensively). "I HAVV SPILT MY WINE!! I VILL MAKE ZEM PAY!"*

And to be honest, i'm more than a little disappointed in it. You could basically do the same game in a mod for Rome: Total War. Not worth the extra $90 I paid for it.

*Not a direct quote - but there definitely is a remark about spilt wine.

This post confuses me :confused:

This is an international forum. Many spellings (even the correct ones, sometimes), and indeed languages, are used. Cope; we have to deal with your missing U's and overzealous-zedding.
The server is .co.uk; honour is spelled with a 'u' in British English.
This thread was (initially) about Medieval 2, which is mostly set before the discovery of the Americas, and all before the founding of the USA.
Neither of the world wars happen during the game.

Anyway, Medieval 2 is on my List Of Games To Get, but probably not this year. I've not finished a game of Rome or Barbarian Invasion so far, and have been distracted from my most recent campaign (to the tune of 30 hours last weekend) by Dwarf Fortress (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/), which is a truly brilliant game.

Its a bit annoying, and RTW was guilty of this as well. Ok, more crap voice acting than anything. The Greek factions all sound like they're from merseyside. :rolleyes:

You were all right to some degree;

German is the main language of about 96 million people in Europe;

-German is spoken primarily in Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, in two-thirds of Switzerland, in the South Tyrol province of Italy (in German, Südtirol), in the small East Cantons of Belgium, and in some border villages of the South Jutland County (in German, Nordschleswig, in Danish, Sønderjylland) of Denmark.

-German-speaking communities are to be found in the former German colony of Namibia, as well as in the other countries of German emigration such as Canada, Mexico, Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Venezuela (where Alemán Coloniero developed), South Africa, and Australia.

- Plautdietsch is a large minority language spoken in the north by the Mennonite communities, and is spoken by more than 200,000 people in Mexico, while standard German is spoken by the affluent German communities in Puebla, Mexico City & Quintana Roo.

German is an official language in the following regions/countries in Europe

* Austria (sole official language)
* Belgium
* Germany (sole official language)
* Liechtenstein (sole official language)
* Luxembourg
* Schleswig in Denmark
* Siebenbürgen in Romania
* Switzerland (majority language)
* South Tyrol in Italy (majority language)

German has a presence in the following regions/countries in Europe

* Alsace in France
* Galicia in Ukraine
* Lorraine in France
* Upper Silesia in Poland

German has a presence in following countries in Africa

* Namibia
* South Africa

German has a presence in following countries in The Americas

* USA & Canada
Amish (USA and Canada)
* German speaking South America
in Brazil
in Argentina
in Chile
in Paraguay

The language is used by 30% of white Namibians. German is a very vital language in Namibia and it has its own German-language newspaper the "Allgemeine-Zeitung".

All this adds together to 120 million people speaking it since birth with another ten million not being natural speakers. Making it somewhere in the range of 130 million speakers.

True for Units or to represent the army the Black Cross could be used, but the Swastika was the German at the time.
What i also find annoying is the insistence of the History Channel to say 'The Nazi's' attacked Point 'A' or Object 'That', it was Germany dammit!
