I am curious. What's the least amount of sleep anyone has gotten in a 24-hour period?
Last night I got about 5, and that was too little for me. I'm usually good around 7-8 hours, but I have a few times gone a day on only 4 hours. I understand that some people can go on very little sleep; from what I've read, somewhere, the human body can function on only 15 minutes of sleep.
Of course, I write this as I prepare for bed...and try to get 9 hours of sleep to make up for my lackage last night.
Yes, I do realize that 5 hours of sleep is a lot for some. But I happen to like my beauty sleep, though ROTC thinks somewhat less of my rest...

The least in a 24 hour period? 0.
Zero.
The least I've gotten while being pretty functional (after some coffee) was 2. I finished an assignment at 5:30, showered, went to bed at 6, then woke up at 8 to go to class and hand it in.
0 as well, though right at the end I was getting more than a little punchy and making some extreamly odd comments.

I've managed many 24 hour periods with no sleep. Last time was when I stayed up for the results of the American midterms. I did it at uni a fair bit, mainly to get essays finished for a deadline. I generally crash straight after and sleep for about 12 hours, then spend the next couple of days getting my sleep pattern back to normal.

when i was younger,i would stay up/awake for 2-3 days in a row(with help)
would start to see stuff, then the body would shut off.
nowadays,i need my 8 hours..but have been battling insomnia for the last few weeks.
sucks
been averaging about 4 hours of broken sleep, and it is taking it's toll.
zero. I find it easiest to stay up a long time if I've had a little bit of exercise and my day isnt too stressful.

Realistically, if you haven't stayed up for 24 hours straight then you're just not at the partying age :p I've been up longer, but my most memorable time was about 36 hours at a festival, followed by falling asleep driving home. Not smart, especially with two friends in the car.
At the opposite end of the scale, I slept for 25 hours out of a possible 48 from saturday to monday. Good times.
I regularly go fine on 4 or 5

See, I've never done that from partying, would typically get at least one hour of sleep in such cases after the party died down. School on the other hand has been responsible for pretty much every case I've had of not sleeping for a day.

As a matter of fact, everyone who has stayed up for an entire 24 hour period...man, that's crazy. I don't think I can ever complain about only four hours anymore. And those who have gone longer...I don't know how or why, but that is amazing. I would think that the body would shut off after a certain amount of time.

see, what sucks is, once you've lost sleep, you can't "make it up" you've lost it forever, like your virginity. The next night, sleeping in longer won't help. at least it feels better tho.

Maybe its something that you get used to. When I was younger I'd be tired early and need about 8 hours of sleep but now I can go several days with 4-5 hours of sleep each day without feeling to bad. Just a quick shower in the morning and I'm fine.

zero. I stayed up for more than 36 hours a few times, it's not healthy and not fun and I don't recommend it
I rarely get sufficient sleep. =/ I have been running on two or three hours a night for so long that I have forgotten how many it takes for me to be able to function properly. Twelve, maybe. That would be niiiiice.
Alas, at least it is useful to be accustomed to pulling all-nighters. Not really bothersome anymore. =)

I've done 24 without sleep at all, and I've done five days on a TOTAL of 6 hours of sleep, averaging an hour a night. By the fifth day, I was honestly seeing and hearing things. It wasn't good at all. I left in the middle of my last exam, without even looking at the last two pages, because I thought somebody told me that I didn't actually have to finish it, and I could go now.
... I still managed 80%, so I must have kicked that exam's ass on the pages I did complete.

i regularly have to stay awake for upwards of 24 hours to write essays because i'm very disorganised and i lack motivation.

I try to get 2/4/10 hours sleep anything else and I either can’t get up or feel terrible (though if you can get 4 hours of sleep every night you can just about live apparently so I might try that)
Note: people who get little sleep tend to live longer and/or be female prime ministers!

Ha! I would try that, but I have a tendency to become a wonderful ball of illness when I get little sleep. My immune system needs a certain amount of recharge time, I guess.
But no food? Man, my life is pretty run by my stomach. When I stay up late, I tend to binge eat, mainly junk food, if only because I'm usually asleep when I'm hungriest.

I don't get 0 many times, as I usually fall asleep on the subway on the way to school if I pull an allnighter, but probably two or three times I studied on the train instead of sleeping. I probably get 3-4 hours of sleep a weekday, due to anxiety and homework, which may change pending a possible move out of the city and subsequent transfer.

A few years ago, I had a long period of severe insomonia. During that time, there were a number of times when I got 0 sleep one day, and less than 4 for several days in a row. Needless to say, I wasn't functioning very well during that period. Normally, I get 6-8 hours.

And that's a minimum. I've heard of people who go nearly a month straight, though I don't see how. I usually managed three days before passing out no matter what the situation was. Thank goodness that's in the past, but it's definitely caused a habitual sleep pattern that I can't rid myself of.
Generally speaking, I don't fall asleep until 5 or 6am and I average 4 to 6 hours sleep on a daily basis, although I frequently get much less than that.
I've been up for about 3 days...maybe with slight 10 minute long lapses of consciousness before the end of it. I don't recommend it.
Routinely I get about 6 hours sleep a night.
