Allright back in August I got a real nice new dell laptop, it is pretty sweet. I don't really know that much about computers, but I would guess that this thing should be pretty powerfull.

Anyway the problem is that all of the sudden it is running really slow and laggy. I suspect a virus or something. I ran spybot and didn't find anything too bad, and I'm running a quick scan of Symantec Virus dectection software now, but so far hasn't found anything, and I think it is about done.

any ideas?

Get a better virus scanner.

I recommend either Avast! or AVG. Both work nicely.

If not, take a sledge hammer to it and send it back, saying God tried to smite you, but missed.

I have Avast! on my laptop, it's pretty sweet.

you might want to do housecall (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/) right now though.......just to see if you find anything scary.

Has it been a long time since your last defrag or system cleanup? It may also be possible that your applications are straining your RAM, what kind do you run? Also, you could be using up too much of your hard drive, clear up programs you dont need.

That would depend on whether or not the insurance covers Acts of God.

I am fans of them when using windows but how are they "Better" ? I mean AVG's inability to scan system restore data seemed rather important to me.

Other than word documents and internet, I pretty much just run games (usually Rome: Total War). I got a decent amount of disc space (a little less than a fourth of the hard drive), but I'm running a defrag now anyway.

I'm also trying that housecall thing, but it is taking a long time.

I do use widgets on my desktop even though its not a mac...that couldn't be the problem though, it has worked fine for months.

I bet it will just fix itself eventually, it ran kinda slow last night too, but earlier today it was doing fine, now its slow again...it might get better again...

That's what online scanners every so often are for.
Pandasoft (http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm)
Kaspersky (http://usa.kaspersky.com/services/free-virus-scanner.php)
Housecall (http://housecall65.trendmicro.com/)
Bit-defender (http://www.bitdefender.com/)

Norton has one but something has screwed up with it and I can't run it.

Easy for you to say ... try supporting such nonsense we did ... for years

Thank god we purchased symantec corporate

On my own computer ... well I don't bother with any ... but I would not be adverse to running most of them (except for panda) ... but I would hardly call them in the same category for support at least with multi users.

I'm sorry but what the fuck are you talking about? This thread is about one person asking about computer help for themselves and I suggested he could run one of those occasionally. And Panda is the least useful on the list because if I recall, it won't remove anything. I really need to get it off the list of stuff I might run.

Also, Panda has a separate spyware scanner, which I am running now for shits and giggles.

I keep my computer stockpiled with scanners and protectors and utilities.
Lavasoft Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, Spyware Blaster, AVG Antivirus 7.5, AVG Antispyware 7.5, Windows Defender, TweakNow Reg Cleaner, CCleaner, and Hijack This!

Actually, you can rarely go wrong by going to majorgeeks.com and checking out the sections you are interested in an arranging them by popularity.
