Haha! A battle of spinoffs!

Judge on any criteria you wish.

For those of you not familiar with the shows in question, Torchwood (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torchwood) is a spin-off of Doctor Who (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Who).

And Stargate Atlantis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stargate_Atlantis) is a spinoff of Stargate SG-1 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stargate_SG1).

But if you don't know that, you have no place in this thread anyways.

Poll coming soon.

Suggested categories for discussion include writing, villains, babe factor, and who has the best Jack.

Im going to say "Atlantis", Its simply very good and slightly loses a touch of the Amero-centrism that existed in SG1. I dont really like Dr. Who to tell the truth.

Well, Torchwood isn't Doctor Who. It's a spin off thereof. :p

I like SGA better as well, tell the truth, but then it's been out longer.

While SGA is good, I think Torchwood is better.

Of course, with such wildly dissimilar shows, it's just a matter of which one I find more enjoyable and, frankly, I've never been much good at tuning in to shows on a regular basis, but Doctor Who and Torchwood are exceptions to that, while SG-1 and SGA aren't.

I can't decide. Being a fan of Torchwood I have watched every episode so far. But I also love Stargate SG-1 and like what I have seen of Atlantis (unfortuneatly the timing of its relise over here was such that I couldn't requally watch it :( ) so I can't make my mind up.

Having not actually seen SGA, I'm going to say that it's better. Seriously, it can't be worse. The male lead in Torchwood is the best actor in the series, and he gave the best acting performance of his life in Shark Attack 3: Megalodon.

Atlantis is a spinoff and a parallel series often interacting with the main series and they have intertwining storylines. SG: Atlantis wins.

In a choice between Torchwood and SGA, I'd go with masturbation or drinking myself unconscious tbh.
I hate them equally
So Torchwood for the lesbian bit.
No really, I loved SG:SG1 back in the day but the spin-off's pants. Dr. Who without Dr. Who is just poor.

SGA is to SG1 as DS9 was to TNG.

Everybody follow along alright?

Stargate: Atlantis.

I can't say anything about Torchwood, as I've not seen it. But, SG:A has excellent writing, very good acting, great special effects, and interesting storylines. It's almost as if SG1 never left!

I blame Chris Cairns for me not watching Stargate Atlantis, as for Torchwood, first time i've heard of it as a series.

I dunno, I'm a bit split. SGA is one of the few shows I watch, as is Torchwood, but the excessive amount of needless same-sex action in Torchwood is becoming a bit of a turn off, and that's coming from a fag.

Even when it serves little purpose in the storyline?

That depends who's onscreen at the time. Captain Jack is just, well - he's fun to watch. As for the rest, well I prefer seeing people getting it on more than gunning each other down. Guess I'm just funny that way.

At least Deep Space 9 bothers with story arcs with consequences. The biggie for me was the whole Jazia Dax to Ezri Dax transition. Oh. of course and the Dominion War.

SGA is very much a worthy spinoff, and it's fourth season going into production soon looks to be good, I think we get the remainder of 3 in march.
Anyways since SG1 finally got the axe by scifi, SGA will become the standard bearer for the whole Stargate franchise, and scifi definetely seem to think that it go on for many years into the future, which may mean crossovers for the SG1/Earth storyline.

Torchwood. I've always hated SG-1 and anything related to it, it just seemed so pointless.
