The body of a missing US woman has been found by her family, wedged upside down behind a bookcase in her room.
Mariesa Weber, 38, is believed to have fallen over and become trapped as she tried to reach behind the bookcase to adjust the plug for a TV set.

Her family spent nearly two weeks searching for her, fearing she had been kidnapped from the house she shared with them in Florida.

There are several questions to be asked at this juncture. Namely

HOW COULD THEY HAVE BEEN SO STUPID!!!!!!

Didn't they look in the house at ALL? Didnt they notice the bookshelf was out of place?

Seriously this is posibly the stupidest way to die and a very silly family when looking for her.

no... the title shouldn't be "Only in America."

it should be "Only in Geriatric Country (AKA Florida)"

What about the stench of death? You would think, after 2 weeks, the ol' gal would be gettin' pretty ripe!!!

Maybe they had a Smell-o-Vision TV set and watched a lot of Law & Order Special Victims Unit.

Her body was eventually discovered when her sister noticed a foot protruding behind the bookcase in her bedroom.

The family told the newspaper they had noticed a strange smell from her room but had blamed it on rats.

strange. Well I must say thats the stupidest thing I've seen this week

They noticed a smell, but attributed it to "rats" according to the story.

Someone actually continued living in the same house for over a week without noticing it was the victim.

Maybe in other countries, families check behind and under all furnishings before going to bed each night.

Us goofy Yanks just assume there is no one rotting behind the credenza.

We would have the technology to make them so small that you would never know that they were there. If you don't do anything wrong, you have nothing to fear. On the other hand, if you are kidnapped, or are otherwise lost, the government can find you.

I don't have faith in the government to be responsible with that sort of technology. There is little to lead me to such a faith.

Of course because all our elderly never leave the post office….

And because we all have a great fear of the 3rd dimension!!!

I agree with this you have no idea how hard it is to find people especially the feckers who leave there mobile phones at home (seriously how fucking stupid do you have to be to leave your mobile phone at home!)

and there should be a zap button as well it would be interesting to see how that plays out

Edit: well I’m looking at it as everyone has one and a little screen on there computer to find people (and one big screen in Tesco as well)

Wow-so we arent mistaken to believe you are an ignoramus stereotyping Americans this way.

This is it-your big shot at getting a seat on the US-Bashing Express ?

Yes-you've found out we are all "paranoid" about kidnappings. That was supposed to stay our secret-we even agreed on it at the last meeting.

I don't think its anyone's gut reaction to check behind the book case or down the back of the sofa when some one goes missing. If you've shouted and looked around you'd think they were outside of the house.

foolish American have you seen the rail system of the world I can assure you nobody is expecting to get on anytime soon, instead everyone sits around the station looking at there watches muttering things…

And am I the only one who thought this thread said ‘only in Antarctica’ that would be a very strange find indeed not only an old lady but a thriving community with a bookshelf!

If someone disappears, wouldn’t you check their room for clues?

I can understand not moving the furniture around every time someone wanders off, but the body couldn’t have been that well concealed. Perhaps you would not have found them until they died, but surely you would find them the next day (maybe two if they are prone to wandering off without telling anyone).
