Horatio Nelson, Viscount Lord (and 'something of the Nile' i believe) is arguably one of the greatest NAval Commanders of all time, some would say that Marine Chap Bull Hasey(SP) or Chester Nimitz...
I say Nay.
Lord Nelson all the way.
What was Nelsons greatest Victory?

I am really not on game.
I was 1000 posts premature.
I'd put Nimitz over Nelson any day.
Nimitz had to take a fleet of 3 carriers and defeat an enemy with 11 carriers.

But Nelson beat the Spanish and French fleets almost single handedly

Um.. No, i dont think so. Its the bit in the middle. you got the two higher bits at the bow and stern, then ladders goin down to a slightly lower bit.

Hardly. At the outset of hostilities When Napoleon resumed the war between England and France, The English had something like four times the number of ships of the line as the French, and the Spanish didn't have the economy to pose a serious threat off the bat.

Hmm... so would that mean that perhaps General Marshall would have been a better comparison than Nimitz? He did, after all, demonstratet he extreme effectiveness of fighters in naval warfare... a lesson the Japanese learned very well...

31 ships of the line vs. 27 ships of the line isn't as impressive as 3 carriers vs. 11.
Nelson wasn't in the bind Nimitz was in.
Nimitz was heavily outnumbered.

I would put Andrew Browne Cunningham above Nimitz
