So I am being offered a game console for Christmas.

Which one should I go for?
What would you suggest and why?
I haven't had a console in years. The old Nintendo in fact.
I tend to play all sorts of stuff but tend to prefer the stategy and war type games. Don't mind a shooter. Doesn't matter the genra.
Sport games are meh to me.
I am not going to have them spend the money on the manufactured shortage of the P3.
So what have people to say about the main contenders?
Don't buy any of them. Upgrade your computer or something.

If you like strategy and FPSs the best, the PC is the thing for you
Or maybe the Wii if they can get the FPS controls nailed sometime soon.

Dreamcast.
Why? It's amazing and affordible and made by Sega. Sega kicks ass.

Given your layout, the 360 is the system you probably want.
The PS2 and XBox would both be fine.
PS3 would probably be game optimal for you, but the system is a waste of perfectly good money.
Go for the Wii. Its the best thing to happen to gaming since gaming itself was invented. Those new controls, their so awesome. I mean, actually swinging a virtual tennis racquet! Actually swinging your arm as though you were holding a sword. This is going to be totally awesome! Oh, and make sure you get the Legend of Zelda, Twilight Princess. Rumors report that a ride on Epona from one side of Hyrule to the other, takes 45 minutes, the land is THAT huge.
Now I just wait for the inevitable fall of sony. Xbox can't be that far behind.
Get a better computer. I can't imagine any console will ever run Heroes V or Civilization IV.

im tempted to say ps2
if you havent owned a console in years, it will take you a long time to go through the back catalog of ps1 and ps2 games. it will save you a ton of money over time to play the old games that your friends have and can recommend to you. or if you have to pay for them, they can be picked up second hand.
big money saver
you cant get a ps3 for christmas anyway. i dont think they are going to be selling any more of them until after the first of the year.
if you must have a new gen console, get the wii (since you cant get the ps3). its backwards compatible with game cube disks and will be offering all the great games of the past for online download. that can keep you busy until the ps3 is offered at a reasonable price.

I wouldn't be so confident about Xbox. Microsoft can prop it up without ever feeling any pain because of it. Essentially, right now, the wii competes in it's own market, because it has a different game potential. In terms of real RPGs and RTSs... It really isn't as competitive.
In FPS's, it may, or may not be a good choice.
With sports and novelties games, it wins hands down.
Sony is in trouble, because Playstation is it's only moneymaker.
Microsoft, however, is just fine.

Why on earth would anyone want a PS3? It's just an expensive 360 with a doomed disk-technology.
