The video game market's gone to hell in a handbasket

Ok, so I was doing some channel surfing the other day, and saw this commercial for a new video game (it's called Viva Pinata). The concept of the game is that you play the role of a pinata in Pinata Island. After watching that commercial, I came to the realization that the video game companies must be tapped out on game ideas, because my 5 year old niece could have come up with that idea.
Between this game and the Burger King video games, the video game market's gone to hell. What do you think?

Nah, it's just glutted right now. Anyone can make 'em.
I disagree. The last few years have seen some fun and innovative games (Katamari Damacy, Psychonauts, etc.), and there are many more coming out soon (Spore, Portal, etc.). Sure, there's a lot of derivative crap out there, but the few gems more than make up for the rest.

No, I'm just using Viva Pinata as an example. There are plenty of stupid games out there that make no sense to me (like the Picmin series). Add to the fact that there are some games that just won't die. Is there a need for ANOTHER Final Fantasy game? Finally, the video game industry needs to stop "remaking" classic games.

The fact that the concept is unoriginal IS one of my gripes. The fact that they picked pinatas as the focus was just the icing on the WTF cake.
Pal, we have shitty, pointless games created with every new generation, the Barbie Horse Adventures and the like. But the quality of good games outweighs the bad. I personally think that this is one of the best generations of gaming.
You want bad? Buddy, you should read up on the Video Game Depression of 1983, after the fallout of the E.T. Atari fiasco.

I dunno dude, Sim City 4 was looking like the best thing ever, until they finally released it. The game still had all of the transit problems of Sim City 3000 and more... Not only did it have absolutely horrid algorithms for home-to-office-to-home commutes, it also had horrendous calculations for going from city to city (when a car would pass to the next city, its distance would carry over as it should've, but for some unknown reason, the entire round-trip distance of the next city would be added in the car's total trip distance, making the entire trip about four or more times longer than it should be). Along with this, we still had buildings that wouldn't appear correctly on diagonal roads, and a wonky RCI demand algorithm.
Maxis does some truly great stuff, but they never really deliver on their promises (SC4 and The Sims 2 were great, but you get my point).

Well you're right about Sim City 4..it kinda sucked in my opinion. But Maxis REALLY pulled it off with Sims and Sims 2 (which I really enjoyed and I thought was better than Sims)...so I have faith. They really did pull of a hit with The Sims 2, but I felt that it was lacking in a few departments, namely the products you could buy from the get-go (damn EA and their expansion-milking escapades). I also thought it was odd that you couldn't put pieces of furniture or decorations in/on diagonal tiles (diagonal tiles seem to be a problem for Maxis), plus the lifespan of individual sims was really short. And, there was no standard basement building option; instead, you had to do it all by yourself, and that was a very long, tedious, and error-prone process.
I think that Spore will be great, but I have reservations as to whether it'll be fantastic.

i dont think the video game market is going to pot. Nintendo sure isnt. The Wii and DS have/will revolutionise the gaming industry. Nintendo always comes up with new ideas, rather than only going for better graphics. yes, Sony has got a great handheld out, but N has monopolised that for nearly 20 years already. (is that right? i dunno when it first came out) and it has better prices than sony. i mean PS3: £500?? I dont think so :p

I think the emphasis on graphics of recent video games has meant that the gameplay and storylines (if any) tend to lose out a little, and many games are much shorter than their predecessors as well. Still, graphics are good.

Im hard pressed to remember a game in the last 5 years except for Baldurs Gate 1 and 2, which Ive found genuinely fun. FPSs have become so tame, back in the day games like doom and quake scared me shitless, there was a real element of terror/menace (probably all the demonic imagery) which I find lacking in games today. Games just seem so homogenized, for example sega rally was so cheesy that it stood out, you wouldnt get that level of cheese anymore, or at least I havent come across it. And what really annoys me is games which is too story driven to the extent that half of its content is taken up with explanatory sequences. Overly long tutorials are crap as well. The object of any game should be fun, not how many cool features you can put into it.

I concur with the honorable Zealiria. I would much prefer a game be delayed and have it be the one of the most satisfying gaming experiences I've had...than have it rushed and be so disapointed that I would need to beat up the publisher.
Look at the new Zelda for example, it was delayed for over a year to fully integrate the Wii controler into the game...but it's so...perfect now...*drools, then cries, realizing that he still doesn't have a Wii yet*
You can over-delay things however. Look at Blizzard...they say, "OH! Out in summer of 2003!" then WHOOPS...it's still not out.

That's never gonna happen. If a publisher thinks it can make more money by rush-shipping a game, they'll do it. We call this system "capitalism", and it works great a lot of the time, and not so great the rest of the time.

a. You haven't played it. How do you know it's perfect?
b. It's not perfect. Perfection is, as far has humankind knows, impossible.
c. It's yet another 3D Zelda. The 2Ds were much better.
d. The ol' Zelda formula is getting old. The franchise needs a new storyline, and hard.
You can over-delay things however. Look at Blizzard...they say, "OH! Out in summer of 2003!" then WHOOPS...it's still not out.
Meh. That game was gonna suck anyway.
Their tactic for Starcraft 2 seems to be similar to that of the PS3: their going to let demand reach critical mass so they can shift as many units as possible.

I'm not saying that they won't I'm just saying that they shouldn't, and I have seen the trend that when a game is delayed for design purposes the end product tends to be better

I'm in my nerd mode. STOP TRYING TO RUIN MY MOMENT!
I will say that Zelda needs to get some voice actors though...mmm...yes...indeed...

And then there comes the resulting tramplings! :D
hm, the nintendo Wii has just come out with unbelievable technology with the wireless motion controllers, and the xbox 360 keeps releasing awesome titles such as Call of Duty 3, GOW, and soon to be titles such as Halo 3 and the new Brothers in Arms.
I mean, the video game market is just gonna keep increasing. Not all games have such poor concepts such as this Pinata game and Burger King racer or w/e.

All I know is that EA needs to stop making games or to just stick with sports games. I just beat Superman Returns (which I rented, thank God) in about 8 hours and I don't have any reasonable explanation why I stuck it out that long. They fuck up Lord of the Rings games... they fuck up a lot of games they get the licenses for.

*nods knowingly*
EA has what I call the "reverse Midas touch*, whereas everything they touch (outside of sports games which even I will agree are quite lovely), turns to shit.

also applies here.

Nein. All they do for sports games is change the rosters yearly.

i do. i just think it's over-rated.
The developers are stilling churning out crappy ideas like the first year or so with the DS. But Galaxy looks really really fun. That controller shouldn't be underestimated, but it shouldn't be overestimated either.

Your own master race, huh? This sounds like the perfect game for Ny Nordland...
Or me... <.<

Peter Molyneaux was in charge of Fable. Not exactly a second rate developer.
And Black & White 1 and 2. Both awesome. ^^
Right now I am busy with Heroes V and its expansion. Most enjoyable strategy game since Age of Wonders 2 (and Majesty...). :)

Ach. That's really why I never got into it. Good for parties though.

Bleh. I haven't liked any of the Heroes since III...

Yeah... playing sports games alone sucks.

Oh come on. There is a certain draw to creating your own master species and ruling the planet, then the galaxy with them.

A wee bit. But that is besides the point. If I can create my own Master-race I will annihilate all that stands in my way. <.< I am wavering between dark elves and undead.

V is awesome though. Especially the way they reworked the game from the ground up, and introduced an improved skill system. The Necropolis and Dungeon are the best now (well, the former more so in my personal opinion). :D I love how they got rid of most of the Dungeon's uglies and replaced them with the ferocious dark elves. Plus they did it in a cool way. :)

I don't really like the battle system. I think the new sprites (models? What the hell do we call them nowadays?) are pretty awesome, though... I miss the older system.
What really disappointed me was when I saw the ads for V, it made it seem like the new battle system would be like the Total War battles. Which would truly pwn.

No. Well, not sure. But that is the Lich and the Shadow Witch (Dungeon's unupgraded 6th-tier elite) from Heroes V. I want to create something like either, or perhaps a mix of both of them. <.< I doubt I'll be able to though. :(

The battle system is still much the same, but I like it. It's the reason I play Heroes. I'm not a fan of RTS games, other than Majesty (which was more of a sim anyway, and should get a sequel...). I'd rather play a turn-based game like Age of Wonders II or Disciples II.
