WWI Naval Combat Discussion Thread

The First World War had what is perhaps some of the most intriguing naval combat the world has ever seen.

It saw the death of the Armored Cruiser, the birth of and death of the Battlecruiser, the early beginnings of Naval Aviation, the discovery of the sub as a viable weapon, and the glory years for the Dreadnoughts.

From the U-boat war, to Jutland, WWI featured some amazing historical events that are still fun to analyze today.

There is so much to discuss, U-boats, Beatty vs. Jellicoe (Jutland Contraversy), Fischer's arguments with Churchill, the flaws of Fischer's Battlecruiser designs, the Dardanelles Campaign, etc.

Let's have some nice fun here.

Barring "The Emden", World War One's naval theatre was rather dull.

What about SMS Breslau and SMS Goeben? You could make a movie about those!

For what? Running away a lot, shelling Bone, sinking two monitors and being turned over the the Turks?

Sorry, but hardly movie worthy compared to The Emden!

It would have to be a psychothriller, not a war movie.

They could but the Emden would probably be better when you consider it's destruction and part of the crew basically walked back to Germany while battling pirates, Bedouin and dodging the Royal navy...

What a cock-up Churchill engineered at Gallipoli...

And our actions after Juttland were pretty disgraceful as well, sadly.

What are you getting with on this one? The removal of Jellicoe as CO of the Grand Fleet after Jutland?

The blockade is what won the war. If the Brits didn't do that, the war would've ended up going on for many more years.

The Kiel uprising deserves mention, considering it ended the war.

and it occurred because of the blockade.

It should be noted that Robert K. Massie, one of the foremost experts on WWI, stated that the Blockade likely saved millions more lives than it cost.

If that blockade never occurred, the stalemate in Europe would've lasted much longer.
