Do you have headphones? If so, do this:

1. Fit the headphones snugly over (or into) your ears. Try to isolate external noise as much as possible.

2. Adjust your computer's volume to a fairly high level. (This is NOT a shock site, I promise you.)

3. Go to this website (http://gprime.net/flash.php/soundimmersion).

4. Once the Flash file loads completely, click "Go" and TIGHTLY shut your eyes. Seriously, no matter what happens, do not look around -- it will shatter the illusion.

5. Spend the next two minutes in increasing aural astonishment. Try not to think about bats.

6. Return to this thread raving about how awesome the experience was, and about how you are now a better person for it.

You're welcome. :D

This is probably because I have cheap headphones, but I wasn't particularly impressed.

It's actually a headset, but that was seriously cool. I could have sworn they were RIGHT THERE next to me. When it moved down...I kept thinking they were going to start touching me with their box of matches. Seriously, it really felt as if they were about to touch me with a box of matches.

I think that would have worked better if I wasn't half deaf, but it was neat.

Anyways, this didn't work too well with me when I had the iPod headphones on. I actually had to listen to it headphone-free and it sounded better.

Eeek, that was weird.

I kept shrinking away from the sound - what does that guy think he's doing, shaking those matches next to my head?

Intrusive bastard.

At first I was thinking "Wait, isn't this just Surround Sound? Nice, but not so special"

Then I was thinking "AAH! Get away from me, you nutter!"

I was more worried when he was lighting them by my ear at the start. Scared the crap out of me.

how does it work, is it just like normal surround, is it a trick, is it magic?

The intarwebs extend their tubes up through your headphones and eventually surround your head.

Really? It worked fine with my year old pair...

And that was pretty awesome. Although, I'm wondering...given that all that was probably happening was varying the noise levels in each ear, should we not be more awestruck by the power of our brains to tell us where it's "coming from"?

That's what gets me. I remember seeing something like this a few years ago at a science exhibit, but it required complicated, custom-built headphones with multiple speakers in them. I'm at a loss at how they make the sound come from "above" or "below" you by merely varying the sound in two standard earbuds, though...

I didn't have my headphones, so I held my speakers up to my ears (and probably looked crazy in the process. >.>)

I thought it was alright, until I remembered to close my eyes. At that point, I was simply amazed by the, you know, awesomeness of this whole thing.

Dot dot dot.

You realize, of course, that things sound different from behind and from in front, so all they have to do is play different sounds to make your brain interpret the matchbox being in some spot or another. Multiple speakers is probably just a much more efficient way to get surrond sound.
