Poor Ethiopia and Somalia

I just read in the newspaper that Ethiopia finished preparing themselves for war with Islamic militias from Somalia. Ethiopia supports the weak interim government of Somalia which has almost no control over most of the country.

Islamic militias have been fighting the government and secular militias for some time now and enforced Islamic law in some places. They claim Ethiopia placed tens of thousands of soldiers in Somalia, Ethiopia said it only placed a few hundred advisors in the country.

And I always associate Ethiopia with peace, harmony, a spliff and this one Ethiopian girl I know.

Oh, they've been doing this to each other for hundreds of years. Not many neighbours like Ethiopia anyway - historically them being the only Christian Kingdom in the region.

Bearing in mind aswell that the whole region used to be the Ethiopian Empire untill the British and Italians arrived and chopped off the fringes of the empire and made them colonies of their own. Ethiopians probably still feel a little bit of resentment at Greater Ethiopia being irrecoverably partitioned.

Of course, Somali nationalists also view Eastern Ethiopia as part of Greater Somalia (harking back to a centuries old declaration by the Sultan of Yemen). All in all, not a lot of good neighbours on the Horn of Africa.

Now, being the insensitive bitch I am, methinks we should forget about Africa, let them sort their shit out and when they're ready, invite them into the 21st century.

It is just sad. Those nations have so many urgent issues instead of killing each other. The Muslim versus Christianity struggle annoys me. What's the significance of someone's religion when you don't have anything to eat?
