It's ironic that the same pro-life crowd would oppose increased foreign aid to save infant human lives.
Oh I know, it's purely because they are nig...*people of African ethnicitiy*.

I think it's less about that and more about that "well, that's over there and doesn't effect me."

Yep, it's always the idiots who promote this crap. No condoms in Africa, because everyone knows latex has little holes in it so HIV can slip thorugh and the more condoms, the more AIDS patients. No condoms in the USA either, because teens should have learned proper body-shame in seventh grade.
First off, I know more about sex than the pro-abstinence ed fundies, and I'm fourteen years old... and still a virgin who has had few boyfriends.
Second, Christians do not own the moral definition of every damn concept on the damn planet. They do not own the concept of sex, they do not own the concept of marriage, they do not own the concept of maturity. The definition on human nature is not exclusively decided by Christians (or Jews or Muslims or Buddhists or Hindus or Scientologists or atheists or agnostics or believers of teh Bogeyman).
Third, I really, really do wish that third-world countries liek the USA would actually help rather than leave Baptist churches to educate ANYONE about sex. My four-year-old nephew could do a better job.
EDIT: I was reading a different article, sorry. :( But I'm keeping this up here.

Oh they'll care when thier so called 1st world nation collapses into poverty and war (and it will, it happens to all nations at some point). And then they'll beg for aid and all the shit they never did for anyone else. They will receive nothing and deserve nothing.

Proof that sex education cannot stop at abstinence.

good to see that abstinence only sex education works so well.

Yeah, old news, distressing, and one really compelling reason for me to denounce the Catholic religion as espoused by the Vatican as truly evil. The only positive thing about it is that eventually all the Catholics will die from AIDS and we won't be bothered with their tripe any longer. It's become another Jim Jones/Hale-Bopp-like cult.
If you're a practicing Catholic, this should be very clear evidence that your papacy cares nothing for you or those you care about. I'm not suggesting conversion, but you should really take a good, hard look at anything the Vatican says and attempt to understand the political motivations behind it and how they might be counter to your own interests, like living.

I was never Catholic, but I was Protestant for a while. Then I figured if the Christian God really approves of this bull crap, I don't want any part of him.
It's one of the many reasons that I am now maltheist.

Of course, I should get back to the OP.
I agree, it is very sad. I can't even imagine the anguish of a nation that loses babies at such an alarming rate, and one of the things I am truly thankful for is that I don't live in such a place. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about the process of making available the medicines necessary to stop the tragedy to be much help. My heart goes out to the victims of this tragedy, and if someone has a real suggestion that is more productive than simply throwing large amounts of money at the problem with no planning or accountability, then I would do what I could to support it.

Admittedly, US government foreign aid is among the lowest per capita. But I think that the raw dollars speak for themselves.

Well, considering all the foreign aid we've poured into the continent, and the dismal results, that's understandable. Sadly, most African governments are rampantly corrupt. Most of the money winds up in Swiss bank accounts.
