God damnit. I love that song to the bottom of my heart. I mean, I made a fucking thread for the sole purpose of discussing it. What do you think of it?

And am I the only one who begins to cry whenever I hear it? Hell, at the JSA convention I began to cry when someone started playing it on the piano in the hallway. Ask United Chicken Kleptos, he was there and saw it. Don't know why I cry when I hear it... Maybe it hits some deep cord in my soul?

It's a hell of a lot better than the original.

It's one of the few songs that makes me feel suicidal in a GOOD way (up there with Make Out Kids by Motion City Soundtrack and Hear You Me by Jimmy Eat World*)

*Yes, I said Jimmy Eat World. They don;t do many good songs bu that's one.

It's an incredibly beautiful song.

It doesn't make me cry, but it's... special.

:fluffle:

For the longest time I only knew the stupid cheap-ass one they had on MTV where you simply see his face on some kind of mobile thingy (are mobiles called mobiles in English? o.O).

The Donnie Darko one is good, but I like this one better.

You mean what Germans call a handy? Those are cellphones or cells in the States, but I think mobiles in the UK.

No, the things you hang off ceilings, not the mobile telephones.

The "Mad World" Cover by Gary Jules? From Donnie Darko?

*shrug* to be honest I never really liked the song all that much. Great movie, though.

Cracking me up, you are.
This is what I meant:
No, the things you hang off ceilings, not the mobile telephones.

Like the ones you hang over a baby's crib.

This (http://dict.leo.org/ende?lp=ende&p=/oHL..&search=Mobile)said it's indeed mobile, so I left it.

Beautiful song. I could listen to this over and over again and I'd still get the same feeling the first time I heard it.

Lousy annoying song from a lousy annoying movie.

Both for whiney little gothy kids.

I've never met anybody who likes it, and nobody has said it's better than the original. What a strange sample of people. :p

"The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had.." er, yeah *brandishes razor blade*. :S

Absolutely, which is so rare for a song.

I like the song timed with the gears of war trailer. I have it on my xbox and play it whenever im in a match of gears of war, and it works perfectly. Modest Mouse has the same effect.

I like this song - my wife learned to play it on the piano. yay her

One reason I like the song (besides the feeling it gives you when you listen to it) is because my favorite dream of all time is one in which I died.

It makes me feel like everything is hopeless, but that my only acceptable, moral option is to fight like hell, hold back to tide as long as I can. A world in which everything I hold dear has gone wrong, but I'm still here, and that's something fundamentally huge.

I have the original Tears for Fears version on CD - it's a well-written tune.

But that Gears of War advert really sets a great tone.

Yah, it is a fantastic song. I love the song on its own, it worked wonders at the end of Donnie Darko, and it was absolutly beautiful/brilliant in the gears of war trailer.

Speaking of the Gears of War trailer, here is an extended version someone put together from other in game footage. It's a fantastic edit and it fits the song perfectly.

Personally I really like the song. It's undeniably morose, but not in a despicably emo kind of way. It’s somehow a lot more genuine and it really does give a very "special" feeling every time you listen to it.

Definitely one of my extreme favorites. I have to be careful when I listen to it, especially if I'm depressed. I have a tendency to listen to it over and over with varied effects. It's a beautiful song and I always lose it at the part where it says, "Children waiting for the day they feel good" because it hits home.

I don't normally cry at songs, though there was one I heard on Degrassi. It's in the episode where a guy brings a gun to school and shoots himself and his friend. I love that song. :(

Noooooooooooo! Sacrilege, I tells ye!

The Tears for Fears original is far superior. Gary Jules makes dead-pan mulch out of a wonderful, punchy song. 80’s kick teh ass.

Gotta love that trumpet riff!

I like the Gary Jules version and the Tears for Fears version. Gary Jules version is cleary better. The Evergreen Terrace version is where it's at though.

Mad world is one of those songs I heard on the radio one time and fell instantly in love with. Another example would be "She's always a woman to me."
I got the Tears for Fears version, since at first I couldn't find anything by Gary, and while it was great, it just didn't live up to Gary's take on the song. I know what the tears for fears guys were going for (an inherantly sad song that you can dance to) but Gary really got to the heart of the song.

And to it's detractors, just because some goth kids are dorks doesn't make everything sad and depressing meaningless.

Geez, now there's a track I bought on vinyl in 1982. I've never bothered buying it on cassette or CD or downloading it as an .mp3, though - I got over it by 1984 and moved on. I've heard the re-hash as well; it is to laugh. To point and laugh.

Okay, seriously?

This has to be single most agreed upon song ever discussed on NSG.

The large majority love it - at a place where 100 people will usually have 100 violently different opinions on any given song.

Yay! :)

I enjoy the Gary Jules version, it's a great cover, but I also really like Tears For Fears' original. I think it's the fact that they're such different pieces that I can enjoy each on their own merits, instead of having to compare them all the time.
