Bill O'reily thinks we shouldn't train to kill with videogame, but with real people.

I don’t own an iPod. I would never wear an iPod… If this is your primary focus in life - the machines… it’s going to have a staggeringly negative effect, all of this, for America… did you ever talk to these computer geeks? I mean, can you carry on a conversation with them? …I really fear for the United States because, believe me, the jihadists? They’re not playing the video games. They’re killing real people over there.

First that frightening "Kids on fire" business (about wanting Christian kids to be as "willing to give their lives" as the Palestinian suicide bombers), and now this? Are the Right Wing preparing a bloody coup using armies of children?
(No, this is a joke, I don't honestly think they are.)

Stupid fuck

Computer geeks make his probably over priced car run more efficiently
Computer geeks are managing and handling the entire video broadcast he is on

Computer geeks are developing the next generation of computer security.

Like I said stupid fuck

Damn, I knew I should have chosen iron working as a career. Everybody likes talking about tungsten carbide drills after all.

I wonder if he pronounces it "ip-od" like John Larroquette...no seriously, that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Let'ssend our youngsters over to Iraq and wherever to blow themselves up rather than doing something logical...like dropping ip-ods on them.

Hmm, I'm sure that oh Billyboy's going to comment on that in his 'blog. I just got back from Ft. Still (I'm a reservist), and I was in a computer range...where a computer projects an image and you fire mock M4s and M16s at it...all that fancy stuff...computers have brought Military training far, we're in debt to Geeks (not just Computer Geeks), for the fact that they make training smarter, more realistic, and of course, we don't have to 'kill real people' to get our sick little tricks...but I have to say...

Computer Geeks are like Truckers...without them, America Stops.

Read more of the article it seems he is suggesting we should go back to escaping reality by the use of alchohol or drugs:confused: This was the way we used to escape reality according to Bill.

I personally thought I escaped reality by the use of a book or film. I suspect if this is part of the American right that the only acceptable fantasy is that which people have been burnt for.

Brings to mind the phrase "Religion is the Opium of the People"

The most fun no doubt is getting drunk and feeling up subordinates then pressuring them into silence.

I don't think we should train to kill with a videogame either. Videogames are really hard to kill someone with.

Seriously. I mean, you could maybe garrote someone with one of the cords, but the plastic is too soft. maybe the controllers/mouse could be an impromptu flail, but that wouldn't work too well either. And trying to use CDs as Ninja Stars will only lead to disaster, and not the good kind.

If you're basing your opinion on that excerpt you quoted, I think you completely misread it. He is NOT talking about training our kids to kill people in real life rather than playing video games. He is saying we're busy fucking around with the coolest new gadgets, while other people are busy figuring out better ways to kill us. In a sense, he's right. Look at the media frenzy over the PS3. It's a machine, and a gloriously fun time-waster, but it's not making us any smarter, more well educated, or more likely to understand (and therefore combat) people who hate us for being so materialistic. He's just saying we should get our priorities straight.

Hating on technology and the people who bring it to us -- eh, not the brightest thing.

(Btw, I have an iPod. Love it. Also a pocket PC, laptop, desktop, cellphone, bluetooth receiver in my car.... oh yeah, I'm a gadget gal too. ;))

Sir Lancelot: Fair Concord! You shall not have died in vain!
Concord: I'm not quite dead yet, sir.
Sir Lancelot: (surprised) Oh... well, then, you shall not have been mortally wounded in vain -
Concord: Actually, I could pull through, sir.
Sir Lancelot: Oh I see...
Concord: In fact, sir, I think I'm alright to come with you.
Sir Lancelot: No no, sweet Concord. You must stay here! I'll go and get help.
Concord: I feel fine, sir-
Lancelot: (interupting) Farewell, sweet Concord! (runs off)
Concord: I'll just stay here then, shall I sir? Right.

Who the hell is Bill O'Reilly to tell the free market how to allocate resources? I usually agree with what he says, but sometimes he's a bit too arrogant for my liking. If you have moral qualms with a particular product, don't buy it or protest against it, but don't interfere with the democratic right of other people to buy it.

That being said, our addiction to technology is having a detrimental effect upon society; however the most ominous danger posed is not by Islamic terrorists. We are consuming our civilization from the inside when we cast away real human connections in favour of digital ones, when we value our score for online games over our school grades, etc. It's a worrying trend, but there is no way to avert catastrophe without running into the even graver error of restricting freedom.

Well I can say I do agree with the first part ... let the market decide.

Don't worry; there's bound to be some issues on which you and I share similar views. Just because I have some outlandish, morally extremist views doesn't mean that I can't be a more mainstream individual in other areas.

A post from MTAE that I actually agree with!

Damn you MTAE for making sense!

Just kidding ;)

My kid is a little computer junky and I sometimes have to literally pull him away from his computer and make him go outside to play with other kids.

I don't really see where O'Reilly is interfering with the free market. As far as I could tell from the transcript, he isn't trying to get a law passed that would prohibit the use of PS3s and other machines.
