Nintendo Wii

It it so surprising there is no thread about this yet, so I am starting one. Since this thing will be out soon (in fact, in america it's already out), so I wanted to ask you all what your opinion on this new console is, are you getting it, etc.

personally i am not very fond of the concept, but I really hate all consoles, so it's not just the Wii that's bad. and they could have picked a better name for it.

They could have chosen a better name, although I guess at least it sticks in your head.

I'm dedicated to PC games, so I won't be buying a console anytime soon. Especially not a pile of overpriced plastic that is a "next-gen" console.

Mythotic Kelkia
21-11-2006, 17:34
I'm more of a PC gamer, but out of all the "next gen" consoles I definately prefer the Wii. It's actually trying to do something different, wheras the 360 and the PS3 are just more of the same.

Revolution was one of the options that Nintendo came up with to call their new console

It was supposed to be the Nintendo Revolution, but it came out as the Nintendo Wii. Plus, Wii is just so much more fun to say! WII!!

The verdict still isn't in, but I'm hoping the Wii will recover some market share for Nintendo from the PS3. I mean, if anything is overpriced, the PS3 definately is, and the WIIs controller is a pretty cool concept.

I feel the exact same way. The prices on all of the consoles are out of control. My only problem is the only games I ever really like to play are the Zelda games, which means if I want to play the newest one I need to get a Wii. I'm sure that sometime after Christmas, some Wii's will show up at a pawn shop for cheap. Yea for resale!

The graphics on the games just seem like a very high-end Gamecube game, but hey, I'm not complaining. I'm getting one as soon as I can (read: a couple of months).

The launch titles seem just more fun with the addition of the new controller. I can't wait to get my paws on Twilight Princess.

21-11-2006, 17:56
The major thing I applaud Nintendo for is having the sense to come out with a million units of the thing, rather than the what, six times less that sony did with the PS3?

Idiots at Sony didn't *think* there would practically be riots over it if they released barely enough to sell in an hour much less a day?

The Wii should be top dog just for that....

Edit: Oh, and since it can download games from the original NES on, thats yet another reason why the WII will rock :P

I don't understand why anyone would buy one as soon as it comes out. According to Wiki, There are 37 launch titles, and none of them will be released in all three of Japan, Europe and the US (at launch). Why not wait a few months until there are ten times that many games, and the console is significantly cheaper?

A friend of mine bought a Wii the other day, and I got to play it. Wii Sports is a lot of fun. It's all very intuitive, and everyone who tried it was able to play right away without an instruction manual. Tennis is my personal favorite, and I'm terrible at baseball.

It's a lot of fun, but I don't know if it's 250 USD worth of fun. I suppose I'll have to check out whatever other games get made for it. I may end up getting one eventually, but I'm really not a fan of consoles, so it'll probably be after the price goes downa bit.

I'd love to get one too, but here in Sweden the number of released machines are quite few... January, february is more realistic concidering more games will be out, it will probably be cheaper and some of the possible problems with starting up a production line will hopefully be dealt with :) But I'm really just jealous because I can't afford one before christmas ;)

I'm in Sweden, too, ya know *pokes sidebar.* Of course, I ordered one pretty early from spelbutiken.se. I don't know how many units the toy stores are getting in stock, but I don't think it would be impossible to get one (like a PS3 in the US).

The main thing that makes me love it (As opposed to the controller (You dont have to use extragant movements by the way, you can easily sit down and use it)) is backwards compatibility. XBOX360 has nasty semi-backwards compatibility, PS3 has some decent backwards compatibility. The Wii? Whats that? Backwards compatibility basically extending over more than 20 years.

~Hoping that I left it long enough to not double post~
To quote:

Nintendo's Wii will be backward compatible with most games from previous Nintendo systems, as well as the Sega Genesis and Turbografx 16 consoles. The GameCube discs can go in the Wii, but older systems' games (NES, SNES and Nintendo 64) and the non-Nintendo ones will be available through download. (While DS connectivity is confirmed, connectivity is not the same as backward compatibility)

http://thewiikly.zogdog.com/article.php?article=34&ed=3&p=5

The name Nintendo means ‘luck from Heaven’. The name Revolution means ‘overthrow of a ruler’. People still ask, “Why didn’t they just keep ‘Revolution’ as the name of the console?” Aside from the obvious reasons (already trademarked, internet searching for ‘wii’ is much easier to find the console than ‘revolution’, etc.), Nintendo did keep the ‘Revolution’ name. They simply combined Nintendo and Revolution which comes out as ‘Wii’. In Kanji of the old Japanese (19th century and earlier), the name ‘wii’ can literally mean the ‘overthrow of the gods’. Anyone well educated in 19th century Japanese literature or earlier will pick up on the word. With the focus of the Wii to be entirely on disruption and with the collected comments of Nintendo’s top executives listed in this article, it should be proof enough that Wii is a weapon to not only dethrone Sony as market leader. The Wii is to render Sony (and Microsoft) as completely irrelevant as the industry landscape remolds itself due to the disruption.

From everything I've read (and my own experience), Wii Sports - Golf isn't very good at translating slow hits, putting is a nightmare. Also Boxing is apparently unresponsive but Bowling makes up for both of them.

Ok, but why did Nintendo then have to come up with other reasons for the name? Such as this:

Wii sounds like 'we', which emphasizes that the console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

Or this:

Revolution as a name is not ideal; it's long, and in some cultures, it's hard to pronounce. So we wanted something that was short, to the point, easy to pronounce, and distinctive. That's how 'Wii,' as a console name, was created.

Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will release for gamecube at the end of the month.

It was originally made to be a gamecube game, but it took too long to make and when they finished, sales were already starting to die, and gamers were starting to save their money for the next gen systems that were to be released soon.

so they took all the work they had done, and rewrote a bit of it for the new controller, and now it's a Wii launch title.

but it's still going to be released for Gamecube (it has pretty much the same engine as Wind Waker)

I'll let you folks have my opinion sometime next week, probably on a Wednesday, after I play it at one of my friend's places.

This is why I am sick of people using this as an example of the Wii's capabilities. Yes it was initially a gamecube title, but now they're only releasing it for the 'cube because they don't want to piss a lot of people off.
