What I learned at NMC 2006.

So I attended the National Missionary Convention this weekend, and it was possibly the best time ever. I was able to get closer to G-d and some friends from church. Well there are a few things I want to share with you from there.

Islam
1) For every 1 million Muslims, there are only 2 christians working with them.
2) Missionaries to Muslims seek not to convert, but rather seek to build bridges. I find this interesting as most people think of missionaries as those that shove Jesus down the throat of people.
3) Many Christians are opening businesses that employ muslims, which helps rid poverty, and thus helping out the area because economic stability leads to political stability.

Africa
1) Evidently, Africa has a lot of "demonic activity". This comming from an African village leader turned Christian. The story he told was very interesting. His aunt was possesed at different times and talked with a deep voice, that of his dead grandfather. I think that those that don't believe in spirits need to talk to anyone that has worked with small animist tribes.

Creationist Mission
1) Evidently Creationists don't believe in logic. This coming from the mouth of one. I schooled them in their "knowledge"
2) They say that after the flood, all the animals lived in the middle east, and then a great glacial age happened, and they were able to seperate to where they live now.
3) Evidently they accept micro-evolution as they accept the fact that genetic variation leads to changes in breeds of animals.
4) Overall, they were very contradictory, and rather ignorant.

Other than that, i learned about post-modernist thought, which is wrong in the eyes of one christian man. i didn't agree with him at all. He seemed to be very brainwashed. But overall the convention was great, and most of the people there were honestly good people, and the opposite of the stereotyped fundies. I really enjoyed the time there, and as a result, I have made my started seeeking funds for starting my mission field in the near future. Plus, i met a really cute girl from my church, and we seemed to have hit it off.. Go Church! :D

islam

i was under the impression that officially islamic countries dont allow christian evangelism. wasnt there some guy in afghanistan who was going to be executed because he converted from islam to christianity? gotta go with alternate methods in situations like that unless your aim is martyrdom.

africa

yeah there are lots of other religions in africa. its a very complicated place. probably "demonic" isnt the best way to think of it. rather offputting eh?

creationists

how did they react to your more rational version?

That why you don't evangelize. However, since mohammad made a command to read the Injeel, you can, from a christian background, help explain it to them.
As far as demons, thats why i put the words in quotes. I couldn't think of anything bettr to say.
I told them my view, and they were very polite in telling me i was wrong. :) But we came to a solution as to not bother each other with it, meaning i was tired of hearing this guy trying to make up things, and he was tired of me providing scientific evidence ;)

The people in Afghanistan have shown how they perverted the religion of Islam by listening to Hadiths written by men. Really, if al Muslims read, and ONLY followed the Qur'an (like they're supposed to) you wouldn't have all this "kill the infidels" mess.

islam seems to me to be very influenced by local traditions and beliefs. its very hard to change islam in afghanistan since there is no central authority to tell them they are wrong.

(as opposed to the catholic church where the pope can tell local catholics that their beliefs and practices are in error)

(which is not to suggest that one is superior to the other, just different)

When women get stoned for being raped, I think you can safely say that one is better than the other.

i suppose its similar to debates here, you dont convince the person you are debating, you convince the audience. the listeners were probably very influenced by your words and may have been persuaded to look further into it. being a creationist doesnt have to mean being delusional.

so is this a local girl you are interested in?

Its a girl from school. She goes to my church up there. I got to know her over the trip. She is rather good looking and seemingly interested in me, and also mission minded. So I hope I can spark something.

yes bad thing happen in afghanistan but i was more referring to the lack of central authority in islam vs the very centralized authority of the catholic church.

Now, when you say "seemingly interested in," what do you mean?
