Bureaucracy - Bad, or Worse?

Well, I just wasted the last hour of my life.

I'm going through that wonderful time of life known as "College Admission Time". While, for the most part, it hasn't been too bad (besides having to go without sleep one long weekend trying to visit all my East Coast schools), I am about to lose my mind.

I spent the last hour deciding which forms to print out for my school's administration to fill out for each individual college. However, having finished it, I discovered I have the wrong forms. This means that I didn't just waste an hour, it means I get to waste another hour going over everything with the Counseling Office at school, trying to figure this crap out.

Its just another case of stupid Bureaucracy making everyone's lives harder. This whole college application process could be streamlined and made into a simple, intuitive process, if the schools and colleges would just work together to make a simple, unified process.

So what do you think? Feel free to share your own stories about annoying bureaucracies, or your stories about wonderful experiences you've had with them, I suppose.

Never had any trouble filling in forms mostly because I can dribble on about myself all day long :P

I suspect that those forms are just meant to test your resolve by asking you multiple, pointless questions. Only those who are extremely determined can pass.

Worse. What the heck is the point of the bureau of "Homeland Security"? Oh wait, so that we'd have to pay more taxes...

That would explain why the most prestigious colleges also have the most paperwork to fill out.

Bureaucracy is annoying, yeah, but its also essential. Without it, no-one would have any idea what's going on.

The invention of bureaucracy was a milestone in the development of civilisation, it allowed large Empires to become feasible, and as it improved it allowed the actual workers and entrepeneurs of society to do more, as the existance of bureaucracy is self-sustaining and self-improving. As an example, point to any of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, taking aside properties of age and scale I could find you more sophisticated buildings in any town in the Western World.

I'm using the common app.

However, the paperwork for the office still remains, and that's what just cost me an hour of my life. :p

In as much as bureaucracy can keep governments from doing things, it is good ;)

Good or bad, it is necessary, and there is not much we can do about it.

NO it isn't, and yes we can. How much bureaucracy does it take to live in a cave?

Point taken.

It is only necessary within the context of a modern society.

Paper forms? My university application process was all online...with the ability to save one's work and return later to finish...while paying all the application fees online too. It was actually incredibly simple. I could even accept or reject offers of admission online too.

And yes, I've been in several caves out in the wilderness, and I'd rather not associate with the sorts of wildlife that tend to live in them...

Homer: The pig?
Otto: The cow?
Krusty: You're way off. Think smaller...think more legs.

Exactly. I'll take bureaucracy over a cave any day :D

I have heard that Douglas Adams (after creating The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy adventure game (a PC text game)), created a game called "Bureaucracy." It is apparently the only text-based adventure game in which a typo will actually cause your character to have a heart attack and die. It's the true spirit of bureaucracy...
