Not tha band, sorry.

Just wondering about your feelings on the Sabbath day as directed in the Ten Commandments.

Exodus 20:8,9a
"Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all you work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God...."

I somehow made this a public poll. Can I change that?

Awesome band.

Provided we're talking the original lineup, I'll concede the point.

An OK band, if you ask me. War Pigs and Iron Man make me want to kill something, but they did basically invent Metal, so I'll give them some slack.

Keeps Jews inside the house.

Your kidding? There are more Jews outside on the sabbath, then there are during the actual week.

It's a weekend no matter what...just with alot less electronics and money. =\

Like...none.

Great band. Invented heavy metal.

Oh... never mind.

It's a great day to have sex all on, because usually both people will have it off, so they can set it aside as their... time.

Saturday would be more accurate. But I really have no use for a "sabbath" anyway. I wouldn't mind if everyone had a day of rest however. Perhaps people wouldn't be so uptight all the time.

If you are very traditional, then whether it is Saturday or Sunday, you are supposed to do no work at all unless it is of necessity or an errand of mercy. Appropriate "entertainment" would be reading your holy text, light reading, something of that nature.

For those who semi-traditional, it means relaxing and playing after a hard days work, punctuated by visiting one's house of worship and perhaps a family bruncheon afterward.

The non-religious have no problem partying both days of the weekend.

i find it annoying that certain businesses use it as an excuse not to open when i am able to use their services. banks and post offices, i'm looking at you o_0

Awesome weekend newspaper, and radio programming on CBC is especially enjoyable. Having the option to stay in PJs all day is bonus.

Surely they deserve a day off too?

I know... instead of inconveniencing people by removing their time off, go to the bank/post office on your lunch break. Or before or after work/school. You know... like the rest of us mere mortals. ;)

well, the reason i have a problem with it is: the industry i work in (catering/entertainment) expects it's employees to work any day of the week and at unsociable hours for unreliable compensation (tips don't always happen in the UK). why should bank and post office employees get off light? their services are required at all hours too, more so imho, and yet banks (generally) shut to the public at 4pm and 12pm on saturdays with no face-to-face service on sundays at all. i can see no reasonable excuse for this.

In the words of a bad credit card commercial, "ATM fix [nearly] everything!"

That, or come to the States. Tips happen very nearly all the time, and we have a bank (Commerce Bank) that is open 7 days a week.

I thought the entire reason government employees always have Sunday off is a throwback to when religion played a larger part in governments. It simply continues to today, even if fewer use their day off for religious purposes, you simply can not trim back perks that beauracrats have. That would be quite impossible to do unfortunately.

The Sabbath is bad for the economy, *nods*.

Anyway, I voted ignorance, out of the wish that people (notably bank tellers and sex shop owners) would forget about the silly concept and let me go about my business over the weekend.

Romans 14:5

One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.

If the preacher's job is to preach, and the preacher isn't allowed to work on the Sabbath, how exactly does the average Sabbath service work?

well bank employees aren't government employees. it seems to me it is in the banks' interest to have more amenable opening hours. i mean people already have a love/hate relationship with them. banks are always advertising using numbers few people understand. if they used decent opening times to attract customers i reckon they'd be onto a winner.

Well for banks I'd say laziness would be a large part of it. However with the wonders of internet banking, them closing early isn't as big of a pain in the ass as it used to be.

How is preaching necessary? It's nice, don't get me wrong, but it's hardly of the same necessity as preparing food or administering medical care, like I believe is mentioned in the book of Matthew.

Both the Old and New Testaments require a preaching of the Gospel on the Sabbath (the Old Testament has a preaching of the Law, because that's all there was at the time). It's the pastor's job usually to be the preacher also. So, he is doing the necessary work on the necessary day.

His job isn't the least bit necessary. If I was a Christian, I could read the bible myself.
