You'll all hate me for this, but I hope so. We haven't had a major disaster in a while, and I'm getting bored. :p

(as long as nobody picks on Minnesota....)

Needs more cities to choose from, IMO.

Your well-being comes at a stiff price. I'd sooner see you unwell and the world intact, if it's all the same.

I voted '"No", however, I'm assuming that if this were to occur, the chosen method of delivery would be an automobile! My question is, what size bomb would a terrorist most likely use? Measure in kilotons (KT) or megatons (MT).

It would probably be between 3-20 kilotons, as much bigger than that, and the bomb gets really big.

We in Wisconsin and Minnesota have it good don't we?

It's way too cold up here for anyone to want to bother with us. :p

Well, Plut, I don't exactly hate you. I do wonder about you, and I'm gonna assume that you're joking.

I really don't think that this'll happen too soon. I mean, in the sixty+ years that nukes have been around, no non-governmental organization or entity has every gotten their hands on one outside of James Bond movies, and I don't expect that to change radically.

I can't get the application to run, so could someone do the affect on Denver and the surrounding region and let me in on the specifics?

Strange, they have Grand Rapids but not Detroit. Either way, I'm not in the blast zone if either one were bombed.

No. No one is so crazy to explode a nuke in a US city. Not even Bin Laden. Even he knows perfectly that this would lead to a major pogrom against muslim people everywhere.

Anyway, the strategical defense initiative (the Star-Wars Reagan project and its spinoffs) sucks. If I wanted to blast a nuke in the US, I wouldn't deliver it in such an unsubtle way as a ballistic missile. I would use those enormous unwatched areas like the pacific coast (Oregon, for example) to smuggle the nuke in, as if it was a "normal" smuggling operation.

Controlling the borders should be priority for the US government. Those borders are almost totally open. And it is well-known by everyone. The only thing that keeps potential nuclear terrorists from performing the act is that they know that they will trigger an out-of-scale retaliation against every hypotetical perpetrator, and it wouldn't matter who'd done it. If a nuke exploded - let's say - in Los Angeles, I don't think that the US government would wait a secret service inquest to know exactly who'd done it. They would just shoot at every possible source of the attack - Iran, North Korea, Syria, Sudan, Indonesia, Venezuela. And I don't think that the EU or Russia would be opposing that... well, maybe as long as the retaliation isn't nuclear.

A 20KT nuke detonated in the heart of downtown Chicago would destroy almost all of the skyscrapers in the city. Billions in damage, tens of thousands killed.

If you're really interested, find yourself a copy of this very good (but somewhat dated) book:

http://i.biblio.com/b/835m/32943835-0-m.jpg

Should be a couple of bucks on Amazon or at a used bookstore. It's somewhat alarmist, but it does go into decent detail on what can one actually expect from various yield weapons, what life would be like near a blast site, etc.

NB: This book was written before Chernobyl, so we have a better view now of radiation, what with 20 years of a real-world test lab.

This calculator sucks, I wanted to see Charlotte, NC!

Anyways I doubt anyone would do this, because if they did, then well, it's the end of the world.
