So I was looking over the requirements for Secret Service Special Agents and I of course stopped to check out the application. Not surprisingly it's very thorough and long (35 pages), but it does have things scattered throughout that make you wonder.
My favorite questions are found on page 23. They ask you if you've ever used illegal drugs. Then they ask you if you've ever used Marijuana, how many times, and when the last time was. Following, they ask if you've ever used more "hardcore" drugs again.
It almost makes you wonder if they really care if you've smoked weed before or not. Or perhaps they don't care if you've smoked it before in the past, as long as you don't do it anymore? Or maybe they're just looking to see if you admit to taking a few puffs previously before they give you the lie detector test?
Also, they ask if you've ever been convicted of a crime, not a felony as most job descriptions do, probably so you have to describe whatever it was you were charged with. I wonder what the list of "acceptable crimes" is verses "non-acceptable crimes."
Haha...I just figure this would be an interesting thing to ponder...so go ahead...ponder away. What are your opinions on the matter?

Guess I was the only one who thought it was interesting...
Does it ask if you're a terrorist?

That's because they probably have more stringent standards which you have to pass. They might not accept minor criminals; they don't just rebuff felons.

Obviously...
I was wondering what types of crimes they deemed acceptable and which ones would keep you out of a job...

Obviously...
It's possible that they want a more complete record, but can also accept those who have committed a felony.

Considering it's the secret service and they can check if you have a criminal record I'd guess they're checking how honest you are. Or if you're aware of your criminal record.

Why do they even ask then? People, obviously knowing this, would answer truthfully.

Of course they care. They do it this way so that people who think marijuana is doesn't fall under the category as "illicit" (which it is) or "hardcore" (which it isn't) can't use those questions as a loophole.

Its easier than digging through endless records?

There's a difference between using drugs and being arrested for it.

Haha...so do you think using pot once excludes you from getting a job? If not...where's the line that they draw?

I'd assume that they won't allow past drug abuse, but I have no idea how strict they are...

Especially with Presidents being admitted "experimenters" in the past. It makes me wonder, with so many people in the service people who had to have grown up in the 70's or 80's...how many of them "experimented" in their past. I'm sure none were ever hard core drug addicts...or even pot heads...but I seriously doubt if none of them ever took a few puffs in their day...

Probably anothr aspect of the psych profile they build on you. They have to cover all of their bases, like "Is this guy a complete idiot?" or "Does he have compulsive lying disorder", or even "Is this some punk kid/foriegn spy just messing with us?"
In the Australian Army psych test they ask you questions like "When you stand next to high cliffs do you feel like jumping off?" and such.

They do a seperate background check on everyone who gets through primary screening, I would assume. This just gets rid of the easy cases, cutting down on workload.

Precisely what the hell is funny about it? I think the only people who'd find this funny are potheads and dope addicts, as well as people who have committed felonies and misdemeanors.
The Secret Service has one of the most important jobs in the entire US, which is protecting the President, even if it means giving their own life to do so.
Yet you seem to think they shouldd allow people who regularly use illegal drugs to join.
That level of stupidity is stunning, and mindboggling.
And you also seem to think that they should allow convicted murderers, rapists and drug dealers to join.
Nice.
Actually, protecting the President is only a small part of what the Secret Service does. They also deal with counterfitting as well as drug and terrorism.
To deal with those things I want the very best of the best and the dopers can go fuck off.
