Decisions, decisions...

I am facing one of the toughest decisions I have ever had to make: to go to prom to not go to prom...

Pros: once-in-a-lifetime event that shouldn't be missed and could be a lot of fun.

Cons: bad music, too many people (many of whom I am not too fond of), bad food, way overpriced, and this list goes on.

So, should I go or should I not go? What have your prom experiences been like?

PS. I know it's a little too early to be thinking about this, but I need to start the shopping if the decision is in the affirmative.

My School Ball was down right awesome.
We(NZ) have maybe 12% of the Bullshit that you might suffer in your Sugar Falvoured Iceland but it was truly awesome.

Do not miss it.

but it costs so much, and is so bothersome, and I would probably spend the whole night not talking because most of my close friends are at other schools/cities/countries.

I didnt go to mine, everyone who went told me it was terribly implemented, but I always regretted that I missed it anyway. Because, no matter how trashy prom was- you'll always be "That guy that never went to prom" and somewhere along the line you are going to wish you had.

If you go, you can always say "Well, that sucked."

If you don't go, you'll be left with the classic "What If".

As far as the $$ money, I don't know your specific circumstances, so I can't necessarily comment to that. But it doesn't have to be all that posh. My friend and I went in kilts, got some goofy looks, but look back at it now (some 12 years later) as one of the highlights of high school.

Besides...how can you get the obligatory post-prom tail unless you go to prom ?? :)

Well, the only school dance I ever went to net me a girlfriend for about five months, which was kinda neat. But I didn't go to my prom, and I don't regret it. It's not really worth it. All it is, in essence, is an overpriced, overhyped dance where everyone wears clothes that they would never wear normally and generally just wastes their money.

I didn't go to my high school's prom. I saved $90 (Cdn.), a whole lotta other fees (tux, transportation, etc.) and a few hours of my night. And personally, I don't have any regrets whatsoever.

It was basically and event designed by and for everyone from my highschool I never wated to see again. Mind you, my expectations going into it were pretty low, so I suppose it's no surprise that they were abundantly met.

You should go, it's the only chance you'll really get for something like that. So long as you have a couple of decent friends there it'll be great. :)

Only one of my direct friends wen and they were forced to sit at a different table(They were going out with someone a year or two younger, my excellent attitude to life scared away my partner and when it came to it i had a wealth of tables to sit at, whether it was because of pity or because people have this idea that i am a nice guy, who knows.

I had a bloody awesome time, and then the after party.http://assets.jolt.co.uk/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif

I enjoyed my school formals immensely. Go, I think you'll regret it if you don't.

My personal opinion is that it's better to regret doing something than to regret not doing it.

If you go and it sucks, oh well. There's been worse. But if you don't go, you do kinda risk always wondering if you would have had fun or not.

In my former high school there was a tradition that 5th graders helped on the prom of the 6th graders (the seniors). Unfortunately it only lasted one year, so we did the helping, without getting a prom the year after.

Not much a tradition then is it?:p

proms, or balls as we call em, can be great fun. i went to all of mine (we seemed to have a lot at school). if any of your friends are going it will be fun and if you don't like people there just take the piss out of them. mostly my memories of school balls involve being drunk, smoking cigars, falling in swimming pools and wearing stolen sunglasses at night. good times :)

don't bother. my experience was shit music, a million people you didn't know, half-hour queues at the bar, and all for waaaaaaay too much money.
it was shit at uni.
at college though, it wasn't quite that bad... still not worth it imo

Go for it. The one I've been to was just amazingly awesome. And this is pretty much something you have to experience at least once in your life, even if it does suck quite a bit.

Just my words.

And, besides: For good or bad, it WILL be a memory to last you for life.

As a former foreign exchange student, I have two clear memories of the US High School: The Prom, and a broken nose ;)

Fact is the prom is Just Another School Dance(an outrageously expensive one, but otherwise no more meaningfull than any other). And without your friends there with you, there is nothing worth going for.

And no, you won't be plauged by "what if's" or any other junk like that. Not to say some people wouldn't, but you've made it clear that the prom means little(if anything at all) to you, so you won't be missing anything by not going, and you won't be plauged by guilt or curiosity. In five years time, this whole thing will have all but dissapeared from your memory. Hell, if it wern't for having wandered into this thread, I wouldn't have rembered ignoring prom(and graduation, and every other social function in high school).

Save your money, and spend the time doing something you know you'll enjoy. And fear not, there's plenty of other opportunities for stuffy, pointless and forgettable social occasions.
