Bo Schembeckler dead at age 77 :(

It seems almost too much of a coincidence that the day before the biggest game in the infamous Michigan - OSU rivalry, a Michigan legend would die.
Spending 6 years of my childhood in Ann Arbor, I became a Michigan fan. I even had the opportunity to meet the legend and get his autograph.
You will be missed Bo.:(
I bet Michigan will turn around tomorrow and kick some Buckeye ass in your memory. It will bring back great memories for Michigan fans such as Bo's first game in the rivalry when he defeated Woody Hayes and his undefeated Buckeye team.
RIP Bo. You're up there with Bob Ufer and Fielding H Yost in Wolverine Heaven

As long as sports news shuts the fuck up about Michigan-Ohio St. I'll be happy. I can't even turn on ESPN without hearing about it. I hope they tie, just to give the BCS a big middle finger.

Bob Ufer, the former voice of the Michigan Wolverines read this great poem in 1969 when Bo in his 1st year crushed the undefeated and #1 ranked Buckeyes.
And the forum sighed its collective "meh."

Just leave the freaking thread troll. I know you just love trying to piss people off so get the hell out of my thread.
What are you getting so twisted about? Ask yourself--are you really upset at me, or are you upset that no one else seems to care that one of your sports idols passed on?
Just get out of this thread unless you have something to say about Bo, the "10 Year War" or anything else about the battle between the Maize and Blue and the Scarlet and Grey.

As a born-and-raised Buckeye, I have learned to accept Ohio State as the Lord and Savior of all football, to hate all things maize and blue, and to accept Jim Tressel as the Messiah. Then I went to Ohio University and distanced myself from it, fortunately. I am not a blind Buckeye supporter, though I will be pulling for them this Saturday.
I have this to say - I am revising my prediction. Michigan by a touchdown. And he will be missed. As much as we are opposed to all that is maize and blue down here, it's impossible not to respect a man who did so much for that program. As a college football fan, I can say that those who call themselves college football fans but have no respect for Schembechler are deluded.
And damn if that wasn't the craziest timing.

The funniest I heard was that he really died when he fainted on the 16th of October. They've just been using a robot for the TV appearances. They waited until today to announce it so Michigan would be motivated to go kick some Buckeye ass. I hope this game goes just like the 95 game or the 69 game (which started the 10 year war). In both years, Meeechigan defeated an undefeated and #1 ranked OSU team.

I agree with LG's 'Conspiracy Theory', except it's Michigan who's started it.
And I think IDF's right about the whole 'Weekend at Bo's' scenario.
This is obviously a communist plot to get into the Buckeye's heads. Won't matter though; O! H! I! O!
Buckeyes still win by more than a touchdown. And if they don't...well, I'll already be three sheets to the wind, so it won't take much more to kill the pain...
Regardless, I still think (unless it's a blowout for either team) that this game will be replayed on 8 January. Best two teams in the nation, they deserve to compete for the National Championship.

Funny note on the O-H-I-O thing. I went to the 2002 game (yes I know OSU kicked ass and won the National Title that year). I was in the Meeechigan/visitors section and we were in the area when the I's got around. We gave the OSU student section the bird.

Easy, dude. I know OSU fans can be pompous, self-righteous, we're-better-than-you, set-your-car-on-fire, pretentious assholes, and they had no right to issue middle fingers in that regard, but leave the band out of it. I am partially biased because my brother's in the Purdue marching band, but there are plenty of other OSU fans who are more deserving of the middle finger. Like half of them.
And yes, they're a bunch of swaggering jackasses with fans who aren't happy with perfection, but they're my hometown's swaggering jackasses and my hometown's fans who aren't happy with perfection. We actually called for Jim Tressel's head here before he even coached a game. We criticized the team openly for their performance in the season opener - an easy victory. Ohio State's fans, or the miserable part of them, don't deserve a national championship. Just once, OSU should go 0-12.
Not that it will matter. When Michigan stabs the stake through Buckeye country's hearts this Saturday, it will be deserved, at least to those miserable fucks who are incapable of being happy.

Well, for better or for worse, conference championships don't necessarily matter. Although they can help with the charlie-foxtrot known as the BCS, which is what matters.
There should be a playoff. I don't think that the bowl committees would go for it, though, unless they could be guaranteed more money.

The OSU fans actually booed the Michigan band. I love that band. "Hail to the Victors" is the best college fight song.
Oh yeah, I did see the riot in 2002 when 50 cars got torched. The uprights were greased so the OSU fans had trouble climbing them and tearing them down.

You should do what my mom and grandpa did when my mom was in college. My grandpa is a dyed-in-the-wool Buckeye fan, and my mom went to USC out on the west coast. This was when OSU and USC played in the Rose Bowl frequently. The rule was this - if USC won, my grandpa put a USC bumper sticker on his car for a year. If OSU won, my mom put an OSU bumper sticker on her car for a year.
Of course, do you really want to risk having a Michigan bumper sticker on your car in Ohio? You're likely to be shot.

See what I mean? Half of all OSU fans are assholes. And by assholes, I mean the ones who write letters to the editor right after a big win lambasting the team's performance. I mean the ones who tip over cars and burn couches. I mean the ones who threaten the safety of out-of-town visitors (last year, we got a LOT of complaints from people coming up to watch the Texas game.)
Also, "Hail Purdue" > "The Victors", just as "Hail Purdue" > "Across the Field." All three > Notre Dame's fight song.

I could care less who wins this weekend. I do, however, really believe that, and not just because the Arkansas Razorbacks have an outside chance, if they win out, to be in the Championship game. USC would have to lose again, as that's who beat the Hawgs in the season opener.

Aside from the OSU-Michigan winner, I am really pulling for Rutgers to make the title game just because that would be cool. It's an outside shot and a couple of teams probably have to lose (Arkansas is among them) but Rutgers was the butt of jokes for so many years in college football. Imagine them in the title game.

For Rutgers to make it, I think they'll have to run the table, and everyone with one loss will have to lose again. I just don't see it any other way.

About a week ago, I posted this, from ESPN.com. It (more or less) said what had to happen for the State University of New Jersey to make the championship game...some of it has happened, some of it hasn't....
This is what needs to happen -- either all of this, or at least most of it:
Northwestern beats Ohio State; Indiana bests Michigan; South Florida and UConn dispatch Louisville; Florida State makes Florida pay for its recent hard times, with South Carolina and/or Western Carolina doing the same; Kansas State and Texas A&M put away the Longhorns; Georgia and Alabama make short work of Auburn; Oregon and, if it would like to chip in, UCLA wipe out USC; Arizona and Stanford muscle out Cal; Air Force and Army blitzkrieg Notre Dame; Cincinnati and Pitt humble West Virginia; Tennessee and Mississippi State handle Arkansas; and, finally, Alabama and Ole Miss run roughshod over LSU.
This is not a suggestion that anybody should lie down in order to fulfill Rutgers' destiny. On the contrary, it's asking 20 or so schools to rise above what will mostly be underdog berths and clear the decks so Rutgers can be in a position to fulfill its own destiny on January 8th.
Isn't that the least they can do?

If this were to be settled by a Division I tournament, I would think that only conference champs would be seeded. The idea that the BCS monstrosity would allow a conference runner-up to play in a championship game is silly.

Well, let's look at that.
The ACC has only one one-loss team, and it's fucking Wake Forest. And unbeaten Rutgers is better than a one-loss Wake Forest.
The Big 12 is out of one-loss teams. Even Texas has two losses.
Conference USA, the MAC, and the Mountain West? Don't make me laugh. BYU has two losses. Everyone else in those theee conferences has at least three, including my beloved Ohio Bobcats.
USC has to survive Cal, UCLA, and Notre Dame. That's tough for a team that couldn't beat Oregon State.
Out of the Sun Belt and the WAC, Boise State is still around, but the WAC couldn't possibly produce a BCS title game contender.
That leaves the SEC. So simply put, USC, Florida, Arkansas, and Notre Dame all have to lose one more time. USC and Notre Dame play each other. So do Florida and Arkansas. If the winners of those games lose one more time (i.e. USC beats Notre Dame but loses to Cal, and then Arkansas beats Florida but loses to, say, LSU) then Rutgers is a shoo-in. If any of those teams makes it with just one loss, it becomes tough.
That's all assuming Rutgers beats West Virginia. If West Virginia wins that game, Florida and Arkansas are likely playing for the right to go to the national championship.

Well, one of the problems that you have, is that 'Conference Championships' aren't consistent. For example, the Big Ten doesn't have a tournament, while other conferences do.

I don't know why that's a problem. The teams can compare conference records and it's pretty easy to figure out who the winner is.

Woody was a good guy, despite the public image that was projected during his last year of coaching. I took a couple military history classes because I wanted to be able to say I had met him. More than just seeing him walking across the Oval, that is.

They both came from an age where football was still a game. A very serious game, to be sure, but it wasn't the big business that it is now. I'm sure each of them cared far more about their players than just to know how well they would play on Saturday.
After Woody had been fired from coaching, he was teaching history. I walked into class one day and I was the only one in the room for a few minutes. Coach Hayes actually knew who I was, what I had turned in recently and what I needed to do to improve my work in that class.
Bo definitely was known for caring for his players. If someone on the reserve squad needed something, he was there for them.
Bo still kept an office in Schembechler Hall (which was obviously named for him). He hasn't coached in 17 years, but he had office hours and met with players every day. He even spoke to the team to give them a motivating speech just yesterday and spoked at a press conference on Monday.
Bo is one of the last of a great era of coaches that included Woody and Bear Bryant. The last of that generation is Bill Mallory (he really got screwed by the Athletic Department at IU).
