Actually - this is not the first time - in my Paper News they reported another model who died recently in the same article.
Thing is - she died of starvation the day before she was to appear in a photo shoot.
THIS WOMAN STARVED TO DEATH AND UP UNTIL HER DEATH FROM STARVATION SHE WAS STILL WANTED IN PHOTO SHOOTS
That is SICK!
She was not 'skinney'. She was not 'thin'. She was dying of starvation - and that's exactly how they wanted her to look.

Spain took a step in the right direction by banning too-thin models from the runways. Maybe others will wise up and do the same...although we need the market to dictate that for the most part. No way in hell will some governments touch that, especially the U.S.
But yeah, it's about damn time that anyone tried to keep up a ridiculously insane weight just for a fucking job. And it's not just models, either - wrestlers (not pro wrestlers, I mean legitimate wrestlers like the the Olympics and colleges) often starve themselves and run insane exercise routines to make weight, and football players often go the other way to be bigger and bulkier. Honestly, it's absolutely insane. People kill themselves just for some job that most people don't even appreciate.
What's really strange is that really skinny women are not attractive at all. And yet for some reason all the models still want to be/get pressured into being skinny.

I wonder if there are any studies done to determine what people actually find "attractive." I will say this, though - anyone who looks like she might break in half if I bumped into her is not attractive.

That would be an interesting study.

they have. men are attracked to wome with a certain waist to hip ratios, women dont necessaryily have to be skinny. marilyn monroe, compared to current modles, was "over wieght".

There was a survey of who people would most like to see on the catwalk - Kelly Brook won.
Linkey (http://www.entertainmentwise.com/news?id=23004)
Note - others in the top ten include:
Kate Winslett (curvey)
Charlotte Church (curvey)
Coleen McLoughlin (curvey)
Nigella Lawson (curvey)
Billie Piper (curvey)
Cindy Crawford (curvey)
Kate Moss (skinney)
Keira Knightly (skinney)
Victoria Beckham (skinney)
The results are very UK-centric - so I assume it was a UK poll.
Cindy Crawford is the least skinney of the curvey lot, by a long way. If you don't count her as super skinney then you ahve to go to Seventh place for a skinney woman - Kate moss.
And the winner - Kelly Brook - just becase I like postig her pictures :)

I hadnt really thought seriously about this matter recently untill I saw a pictre of a model on another site. You could see her should blades and each and every single vertebrae through her skin and her arms were so thin it was amazing she was able to stand up with the weight of the dress on her. That is so ridiculously unattractive its not funny. Who are these models appealing to anyway?

For those of us who speak in Imperial units, i got 5'8" and 88 pounds out of that. No one should weigh that little. That isn't sexy. That isn't even borderline attractive. That's looking like you've been starved for eight fucking months, like you've been playing Survivor for that long. It's the complete polar opposite of sexy. Why it is that the modeling industry tries to cram it down our throats is beyond me. Some idiots are buying it. Howard Stern claims to love it. I can't imagine why.

Oops, sorry. Forgot to add the conversion. And yeah, that's not attractive; someone that height and weight is just skeletal. Frightening, really.
I've heard that some models actually have to have fat airbrushed onto their photos for magazines and catalogues, because they just look too skinny otherwise. Well, not fat, I guess; mass or substance, maybe (they're certainly not being made to look overweight, that's for sure). I don't have a source for that, it's just hearsay - but I'd have no problem believing it, considering the way some models today look.

5'8 and 88lbs...that was me at age 18. The joys of being a workaholic. 500 calories a day(worked through breakfast, fell asleep after dance practice and missed dinner), and about 4 hours of sleep. I WAS starved, sick, exhausted. And nobody took a second glance. Now that I'm about 50lbs heavier, there are people snapping pictures of me at the bar, following me around the mall, and begging me to dance when I'm out at the club. Curves are HEALTHY, and it seems the people around here know it. If only the rest of the world would wake the fuck up...

Ooooh-kay, I see...since a lot of the products they model for are women's products, and women appreciate thinness, that's why they're so thin. On the other hand, if we're talking about selling to men, then the women may look a little healthier. May.

Not really. Men and women are perfectly capable of appreciating the same attributes -- it's the media perpetuating the idea that your girlfriends are going to talk shit about you if you're not rail thin, and the idea that your buddies are going to think you're wussy or gay if you're not pumped full of steroids.

If she was sick enough in the head that she would die of starvation in order to achieve the perfect body, then she should have been committed. The fact that she wasn't tied up in a mental facility with food in her belly and shrinks in her head tells more about the people closest to her than her.
That being said, I have little sympathy for the idea that skinny = healthy. Healthy people can be thin, but the fact that you're not thin doesn't necessarily mean you're unhealthy.
I'm thinking of those girls that see Tyra Banks and say, "I'm obese. I wanna be like her. I think I'll starve myself and maybe I'll get down to her weight." No, Tyra Banks has nutritionists and fitness advisors in order to maintain her weight.

For many people, walking and taking the stairs isn't enough. And how much you eat is not as important as what you eat. Most people who are thin have to work at it. This is especially true the older you get.

I know that. And I know that there are plenty of people who do NOT need the extra exercise. Depending on your metabolism, eating habits, and work habits, you could either need several hours or 30 minutes.
Some just don't realize that the recommended 15-30 minutes 2-3 times a week doesn't have to be intentional exercise. It can be running an errand, chasing kids while you're visiting relatives or babysitting, or just walking the dog. That's the point I'd like to get across.
Make a habit of taking the time to walk. Maybe wake up 30 minutes early so you can walk to class instead of waiting on the bus. It's all in the habits, barring any pre-existing medical issue.

I run 3+ miles every day, my aerobic conditioning is very good. But I still have somewhat of a belly. I'd like abs I could wash a bedsheet on, but I'm not willing to do the 5000 crunches a day I'd need to do to get it. So I'll still have my little gut.
The kicker, though: I don't bitch about it like they do. :D
Technically, you could wash the bedsheet with the rolls of fat, maybe?

Well, in that case, they're just covered in fat ,which crunchs wouldn't do you any good for. You burn about the same amount of calories just laying down. Personally, I advocate Sudoku as a weight loss system. Thinking hard burns calories.

Not everyone who is skinny is anorexic. I'm naturally skinny (105 pounds, 5'6'' tall, 17.3 BMI), and I eat plenty of food (roughly 1600-1800 calories per day, which is enough for someone my size). Disorders like anorexia and bulimia are terrible, and so is the image that the only way to be attractive is to be skinny. I'm glad that But that doesn't mean that people who are naturally skinny are neccesarily unhealthy.

My bf's BMI is like 16.5 and he eats a tonne of food. He just doesn't gain weight, but then his mom's side of the family is apparently all like that. Really tall and really thin.

Yeah, my younger brother is taller in than me and at about the same weight, so his BMI is somewhere around 16. He eats a lot more than I do (although maybe that's because he's a teenaged boy). I just looked mine up again and found that it's gone down, and is now actually 16.9 (the 17.3 was from when I was the same weight but was 5'5''). My mother was about the same size when she was my age.
She has no boobies!

Now: I work in an office on my college campus, party weekly, go out dancing whenever the hell I feel like it, eat whatever the hell I want WHENEVER the hell I want, and regularly indulge my geeky side -- this weekend, roomie and I are doing a Doctor Who marathon, complete with popcorn and assorted junk food.

That looks appallingly unhealthy, and ridiculously unattractive.

I ditto this. I'm certainly not overweight, I'm at the underweight side of healthy, and I've always had a bit of a belly.

I've never understood why models think it's attractive to be skin and bones.
My girlfriend only weighs like 105 lbs, but that's not bad, since she's 5'2. I find her really attractive, naturally, and not to sound shallow, but her shapely hips really make me go all... well... never mind. Curves make a woman look sensual, attractive. Without them, she looks... juvenile.

I sure don't.
The sad thing about modeling agencies as well as the rest of the media is that Holocaust victim/starving Ethiopian kid look = sexy, when in fact it's very unhealthy. I may have a BMI of 17 (for a 14 year old though that's on the light side of healthy) but if they ever offer me a modeling job (which they probably won't because of my acne... :() I will ask if I can wear a size 3. If they say I must be size 0 I will not take it.
Did you know that most of the models in magazines are 14-15 years old? Sarting the thinness indoctrination very early. :(

Yeah, curvy is definatly better than skinny. My gf is 5'6ish and 110lbs and she gets people approaching her thinking she is a coke addict. Its natural though, I am the same way. 6'2 and 150lbs as a guy is skinny, and I eat pretty bad foods all the time.
We both are also poor and in the city, so we do get good exercise.
