So, do you think the PS3 will win the next-gen console war? Or will the 360 win with its head start? Or will the Wii wow everybody with its unique gameplay?

An overview of the games being scheduled for each system:

PS3: Quite a bit of RPG games, some console strategy games (Also known as the bane of console gamers), some adventure titles. Quite a bit of platformers too, actually. Quite a bit of fliers, as well.

XBOX: Mostly action games. First person shooter stuff. Some action-rpg games. Some hack and slash stuff.

Wii: Three words. Red. Fucking. Steel. Who doesnt want to use the Wii controller like a katana? Or actually have to move your hand like youre pumping a shotgun to actually pump the shotgun in game? Wii essentially equals: Innovative gameplay.

The Wii only came out a few days ago too...

By the way, does anyone know what games are launching the PS3? Im not sure what they are...

I cant wait to get a PS3 but I'm gonna have to wait till the summer when I can buy it. Kinda sucks friggin $600 for it. Havn't seen many different prices around where I live. Its either $600 or its $550

I'm quite happy to just upgrade my PC, at least then I can tailor it to how I want it.

My plan is to offer some poor sap ten bucks for his PS2 to help pay for the PS3. Then I can play Katamari when I have friends over. Other than that, I'm going to get a Wii sometime after Christmas and enjoy the swinging of swords and such.

This time around, I think that the console wars really comes down to individual taste.

*PS3*

Advantages: Really fucking powerful, insane hi-def, excellent roster of games (FF Series, Metal Gear, etc.), extremely versatile (Music player, BLU-RAY!), backwards compatible

Disadvantages: Very complex, extremely fucking expensive!

*Xbox360*

Advantages: Hi-def, reliable Xbox Live setup, equally excellent roster of games (Halo, Dead Rising, etc.), versatile (DVD Player, music player, etc.), reasonable price tag.

Disadvantages: Not as powerful as PS3, rather delicate (don't nudge the bastard while it's got a disk inside), limited backwards compatibility

*Wii*

Advantages: The Controller! (Need I say more?) excellent and classic library of games (Zelda, Red Steel, SUPER SMASH BROS!), user friendly, low price tag (250$ blows the others out of the water here)

Disadvantages: Not as powerful as 360 and no where NEAR as powerful as PS3, not nearly as versatile, so-called "kiddy game" roster (Eternal Darkness would beg to differ however).

I have a 360, as it seemed it combined excellent games and versatility with a reasonable price tag. I might get a Wii later, simply because it's so innovative and is priced to move.

The PS3...The only real reason I would buy it is for Metal Gear Solid 4 and Grand Theft Auto, the latter of which is coming out for the 360. I don't need a Blu-Ray player (my DVDs work fine thank ye), and I don't feel like spending that much money...

But I am but a mere pawn in the console wars. What dost thou think?

Nintendo Wii.

I'll buy it when I can afford it. That means either I get more money or the price drops. I have some legal fees and college to pay for first.

Anyhow...I'm glad it's as expensive as it is. Hopefully the price tag will cut down on the younger gamers buying it and therefore limit the number of "Bob The Builder's Excellent Adventure" type games released. I'm looking forward to a more mature system that will escort gaming into the mainstream, bringing them closer to the accepted status of movies and television.

I'm not going to lie, the Wii looks amazing, but honestly the EyeToy was a cool gadget for a few months as well, but then the novelty grew old. Granted I'll probably end up with a Wii in a few years (I always end up getting a used Nintendo system for the few golden games they release...zelda...super smash bros...) but I won't be thinking about it until then.

As for the 360...it'll be interesting to see if it even matches up with this "next gen." The system almost seems like a halfway point between say the playstation 2 and 3. It does have some fun games, but it's a very American system, which in the world of gaming isn't always a good thing. You need to balance the grand theft autos and the maddens (both favorites of mine) with the likes of the final fantasies and the devil may cry's of the world. (two more favorite series.) Sure 360 has amazing first person shooters and sports titles, and some interesting takes on the free-roaming GTA format, (killing zombies in a mall is fun.) but it is notoriously lacking in other genres.

If you are unaware of the status of video games versus other forms of mainstream media then you better educate yourself, because certain members of both sides of congress are in the process of taking your rights away as you waste time on an internet website. That's what I'm on.

As for my bob the builder reference...I was talking about childish games. With a pricetag of $500 or $600, less and less soccer moms will be buying it for their 12 year olds come christmas time. It will, however, be purchased by those who have the money to buy it: young adults in an older age range. Games are made for who buys the system...the older the people buying it...the more mature the games will be.

I'm not going to ask the cliche "are you kidding me?" because it seems like you're not. I was unaware that I was dealing with a 12 year old. My mistake.

First of all, I said nothing of the sort. Obviously people have tried to ban and/or restrict television and movies. Same goes with music, writing, and, as I said, all forms of media. Interactive media, aka video games, is the newest "evil" for congress to fight, and they're taking a much harsher stance than they have on other media forms. Regardless, even if I didn't think that "people haven't wanted to ban and/or restrict television or movies," it wouldn't matter. That has absolutely nothing to do with what I was saying, and it not a valid counterpoint.

Likewise, the fact that there are television shows and movies for kids and that both television and movies are mainstream means absolutely nothing because neither television nor movies are thought as media to be exclusively for kids. The widely accepted idea of video games, however, is that they are toys, not acceptable media, and specified for children or young adults. Our parents didn't have games at the level that we do, and therefore it is considered unacceptable in society for adults to be "gamers."

With our generation getting older, gaming is becoming a hobby for those who are older as well. My hope, as I stated, is for the PS3 to be a vessel for this switch in society, due to its increased price tag facilitating an older "audience."

As an example one of the new games scheduled for it, Lair, is about dragon riding and combat and you can shake the controller forward to speed the dragon forward or have it attack opponents.

It'll be expensive, but I see the PS3 as being king in the long run if it doesn't get overshadowed by naysayers and advertising campaigns.

First of all, I said nothing of the sort. Obviously people have tried to ban and/or restrict television and movies. Same goes with music, writing, and, as I said, all forms of media. Interactive media, aka video games, is the newest "evil" for congress to fight, and they're taking a much harsher stance than they have on other media forms. Regardless, even if I didn't think that "people haven't wanted to ban and/or restrict television or movies," it wouldn't matter. That has absolutely nothing to do with what I was saying, and it not a valid counterpoint.

As for the PS3...I'll be honest: I was going to get one and sell it for thousands of bucks on eBay. But I decided to do this too late, and thus cannot make the kind of useful money I could that way. I'd have been fine with it, since it's not like I was forcing people to pay that kind of money: they were choosing to, KNOWING that if they just waited they could get it for far less. That's not unfair business there. That's sense.

Luckily, in a way, I won't have to actually force myself to accept that explanation, thus saving me from my conscious.

I think PS3 isnt that much better looking than 360 (even HD, which I dont have). They look relatively the same to me.

Plus, I'll be getting a new computer next month, and that quickly the PS3's graphics will be less than mine. (mmm, GeForce 8800GTX! *drools*)

The one thing I just hate is Sony fanboys still claiming 360's break like glass jaws. My 360, bought in April, has not had a single problem. It was the launch release that had problems, and now IBM projects 5% of PS3 processors will fail.

Plus, I just dont know how they can market $600 as the cheap one.

EDIT: As an aside, as an avid Nintendo maker fun of, the ads for the Wii and the way the control works have started to make me want to humble my prior self and maybe get one. I know that the PS3 control has something similar, but damn-if you really shoot webs by flicking your wrists like that kid in the commercial. Well, damn. I'm intrigued. Actually, they are "truly" losing money. I'd believe that. So is the 360. But they work up to break-even by selling games. Ever wondered why 360 games are so expensive?

That isn't even the worst of it. There has been at least one stabbing in my area and numerous cases of tramplings, intimidation, and beatings. In Connecticut a group of men held up a group of 20 or 30 waiting in line and robbed them, one who resisted wound up shot (thankfully he is now in stable condition). A few miles away, a seventeen year old was held at gunpoint by a older man to hand over his system. A group of teenagers attacked another group with a tire-iron and chains.

This behavior over a gaming system is disgusting and wholly moronic. All the direct blame lies with the punks and assholes who rob and beat people, but I lay all indirect blame on the pissant market strategy of releasing only 400,000 units to the US, and then overinflate the hype.

Sony: This is the shit that gives the gaming community a bad name. And to whoever came up with your bullshit marketing strategy, better no press...than bad press...think of that next time you try to pull some shit like this when you release the PS4...

Think about it: if they were TRULY losing money THEY WOULD NOT SELL THEM.
They're selling a very few at a "cut rate" to whip people up so that they'll be willing to pay more later for their system.

they might well sell them if sony's aim was to maximise their market share. and with stiff competition from the 360 (the advertising is everywhere for it at the mo and the lead its had in sales has gotta count) and the wii means Sony are probably more worried about keeping thier brand #1 atop the gaming pile for long term profits than making small short term losses on the hardware. its a valid business strategy, and Sony can afford to pull it off.
plus they probably recoup losses with inflated software prices, i guess (40 or 50 quid for a fucking game?!)

The one thing I just hate is Sony fanboys still claiming 360's break like glass jaws. My 360, bought in April, has not had a single problem. It was the launch release that had problems, and now IBM projects 5% of PS3 processors will fail.

Wii: Three words. Red. Fucking. Steel. Who doesnt want to use the Wii controller like a katana? Or actually have to move your hand like youre pumping a shotgun to actually pump the shotgun in game? Wii essentially equals: Innovative gameplay.

You can move your hand like you are pumping a shotgun, but I'm pretty sure it won't doing anything. Reloading is done by shaking the nunchuck. I don't think I'll get Red Steel, because I don't like the sensitivity, and as far as I know it can't be calibrated, I have little money so until a FPS gets done right on Wii, I'm not buying it (MP3 doesn't count (FPA)).
