You caught the big Christian fish

A New Jersey highschool student caught his history teacher preaching instead of teaching in public school. The history teacher was also a Baptist minister, and had decided that it was more important to preach about heaven and hell than do the job he was hired for.

When challenged the history preacher lied and said he didn't mix religion with history, but when confronted with evidence he made the comment in the quote below. It strikes me as if he felt he had every right to preach religion on the public dime and he's angry at the student for turning him in.

At first Paszkiewicz denied he mixed in religion with his history lesson and the adults in the room appeared to be buying it, LaClair said. But then LaClair reached into his backpack and produced the CDs.

At that point Paszkiewicz remarked, according to LaClair, "Maybe you're an atheist. You caught the big Christian fish."

Another argument for a hardline separation of church and state.

Ahh, nothing more moral and upstanding than lying and going against the rules you promised to follow when you started your teaching. I guess there's no shortage of hypocrites out there...it's a shame to have them associated with the honest priests and pastors who actually follow the rules and practice what they preach, not dress it up in self-righteous indignation.

What a jackass.

Absolutely. And imagine all the good sermon material he's going to get out of this. "I was fired for preaching the word of Gawd!"

I'd be interested to see what the "corrective action" actually turns out to be. If it's anything short of firing his Christian fins, I say that's a travesty.

He's a poor example of being a Christian. I'd turn his ass in and I'm not an atheist. Why does someone have to be an atheist to think you're an asshole?

Quite a few famous archaeologists have been devout people, but I get the impression your instructor went a little farther than just being a believer.

That's going to be my Quote of the Week (smile.) Talk about being hoisted upon our own petard; the teacher has given every person complaining about the danger of violations of the Establishment clause perfect ammunition to attack the practice of practicing religion in public schools.

"You caught the big Christian fish." This will end up being one of the most famous quotes of the century---guaranteed.

This is true. He should still be fired.

Sentence him to listen to Richard Dawkins for a span of time equaling the time his students had to listen to his crap. And grade him on it.

What's disturbing is that he's been teaching since 1992... and probably getting away with this the whole time.

Nah, this is just a service DCD provides. And the "serious" news gets to be a bit depressing as a constant diet, we need a little relief.

Reminds me of this story ...

When Samuel Taylor Colerlidge asked Charles Lamb (his best friend), "Have you ever heard me preach?" Lamb replied,"I've never heard you do anything else."

I think the teacher would have to sit there and be silent, the position his students were in when he did it.

just out of curoisity: is there somewhere we can go to listen to the tapes?

anyway: the only time I've ever heard religious stuff in the school was a highschool literature class where we compared about half a dozen different creation myths.

It was taught entirely from a literature-based perspective, and did not assess the veritability of any of them, just the style in which they were written.

He rightfully should have been if true ... High school science class is not the place for a political discussion
That no more belongs in the science class then creationism does.

It's at the very end

And the Lorde did speaketh:"yea: guys? If you need to, feel free to ignore anything I just said. That whole 'love your enemies' and 'when struck, turn the other cheek'? Forget about it. and 'fix your own problems before you start messing with other people'? sorry: my bad." Amen.

trust me: it's the one they read to each other before each abortion clinic bombing and before wars and stuff. It's all good.
