Thread Killer

Curious Inquiry
14-11-2006, 20:17
I remember one of the first threads I posted in on NSG. The OP was lamenting being a thread killer. It seemed like whenever she posted in a thread, it died. We all commiserated, shared our own stories of thread killing, and did everything we could to keep the thread alive. But, nowadays, I find myself wishing I could be a thread killer, and post the post that will end the rest of the posts in a thread. Of course, there's an obvious downside to this, that I'll leave to my fellow Generalites to point out. But, how about you? Ever want to kill a thread? What current threads would you kill?

Yeah, I'd like to be able to kill threads that I'm not interested in, or might be interested in but are too long to catch up with. But I realise that that would be incredibly selfish, so I probably wouldn't wish it.

I'd like to kill the Post of Death thread.

The first post was posted 19-03-2006, 2:07 AM.
Quite a few times it has happened that I contribute in a thread and eagerly await comments and replies to my post, but the thread just never gets any more posts. It feels like my post caused the thread to die, and I watch it drop out of the first page.

Anyone else feel like this?

The last post was posted today:
well...im back to say only one thing....and then maybe a few other things to follow up on that one thing.

I still find it impressing that it's being posted in though, even today :p

I'm not a thread killer, I just wind up getting posts ignored/skipped over. I'm the thread speed bump.

As for threads I would balefire:

(So-and-so) is a troll.
Threads where people argue for ten pages over whether one math error is more right than another math error.
My God is better than your (whatever).
The gods-damned Dutch thread.
... more I can't think of right now. I'll edit later.

The one problem with them is that if you don't get in at the begining it can be impossible to get upto date, I usually don't bother posting on anything which is over about 4 pages, its just to much hassle.

And there are never enough good science treads everything is either about religion or politics and so my post tend to just get steamroled over and egnored.:(

Sorry, what was that? You want me to bump the British thread again? ;)

Generally, I just ignore those threads I don't like. I do sometimes like the idea of bringing a heated discussion to an end with my point, made with total, undeniable logic and reasonableness, but for some reason this never seems to actually happen. :p

I just tend to put my ideas in randomly or join an ongoing debate - they're always the same basic arguments, so trawling through 20 pages is a bit pointless when you know exactly how it will go. A dash of politics and religion is always good, but anyone starts taking it wildly OT and I either roll with it or scream abuse at them until they stop :p

Plus, massive threads are always good for a bit of spamming :D
