I've been hooked on ADOM (www.adom.de) for a few years. Sometimes I give it a rest for several months, and then I get right back into it and don't sleep for a week. It's a drug. :(

I prefer games with either plot or decent action. (System Shock has both. F- yeah.)

Steamband (http://angband.oook.cz/steamband/steamband.html), a Steampunk/Victorian-era version of Angband (an old ASCII-based adventure game).
It has some of the most surreal combinations of literary characters you'll ever see: Bet you didn't know that Count Dracula moonlighted as a T-Rex trainer, or that Countess Báthory was known to chill out with the aliens from War of the Worlds.

ADOM actually has a reasonable level of plot: there are certain tasks which must be performed in order to win, but there is also a great deal of freedom of player choice as to the order and selection of goals they seek to achieve. This isn't really apparent when one starts the game, other than at the most basic level, but once you get a character up to about level 20 (about a third of the way through a standard game) there are sufficient entities to interact with or strategies to undertake that a plot of a type is generated.

Of course, I've had my periods of being hooked on ADOM, so I'm clearly biased. The thing is that the mid and late games are so rich and open to different courses of action that one quickly forgets any numerical concerns and starts to invest the character with quite an emotional attachment.

Anyhow, how could you not love a game where mixing two bottles of plain water can lead to a spontaneous and often fatal explosion?

GNU Backgammon (http://www.gnubg.org/). I can do fairly well against the computer set at "supremo," but usually only in single games. In multipoint matches, I tend to get ripped several new ones very quickly. Can't figure it out. (edit: I used to play backgammon a lot at Yahoo!, but unfortunately this required interacting with other people. GNU Backgammon won't call you name or abandon games when it starts losing a game... Intelligence - any speck of humanity = finally a decent opponent. :D )

I never "got" Tetris. The whole point was to make horizontal lines of blocks so that just a few of them would dissappear, but it was much faster and easier to just make all the blocks dissappear by building one vertical line, so why bother?

Good old Minesweeper, of course.

According to the statistics feature in the particular clone I use (http://kmines.sourceforge.net/), I've played 3557 "expert" games. I've won exactly 51 times.

I play mostly for the carpal tunnel syndrome.

My version doesn't tell me how many times I've played; just my scores, on which I've made much progress since I began playing regularly a few months ago.

My favorite online game is:
http://www.kingdomofloathing.com/
It's a humorous, click-based fantasy rpg-ish game. You play characters with classes like Seal Clubber, or Disco Bandit, accumulate items and such, and do little quests. It's one of those where you have a limited number of turns per day.

For a normal time-waster game, I usually play something like solitaire. I rarely find a game addictive enough that I don't wander away from it and never think of it again after a short while.

I did enjoy "Burning Monkey Puzzle Lab" for a long time - it's a tetris-alike, with a couple of slightly different game modes that made it interesting for a while.

My sister really enjoys
