I haven't read any Steven King in several years, but recently decided to finish reading his Dark Tower series. Is anyone else a fan? Also here's a quiz to decide which character from the series you most resemble.

http://www.quizilla.com/users/SaltnSnail/quizzes/The%20Dark%20Tower%20Character%20Test

My result:
You are Roland! As the last Gunslinger, you have a courageous and steadfast nature, and are unswerving in your actions. Because you act calmly in the face of danger, people like to to have you as an ally. However, you can be cold when it comes to human contact, and have betrayed your friends in the past for your own needs, and need to learn how to love others, or you will become just as heartless as the forces you are trying to fight! Try lightening up a bit.

I kind of thought I might get Eddie Dean instead.

You are Eddie! Eddie is often called the ka-mai, or destiny's fool, by Roland, and to others it may seem as if you are shallow and silly. But you actually have a better understanding of what is going on then most, and hide your deep feelings with humor. As long as you learn to keep your jokes appropriate...

That kicks ass. Personally, I hope I'm The Waste Lands Eddie since he had some of the coolest roles and lines in that book.

I am very much a fan of the series.

You are Alain! Quiet and introverted, you prefer thinking to talking. Even though you aren't that social, you have a kind heart, and will help those in need. You often see things from a unique perspective, but people seem to ignore your feelings. Learn to speak up, and show that you take pride in what you do!

Alain?!!!! aw goddamit!!!

Anyways yes I am a dark tower nut, just last night I had another dream about it. Dark Tower rules. Just to note, Insomnia, another book by King, towards the end it contains info very much relevant to the ending of the Dark Tower. Insomnia isnt that good though.

1st dt book kicked ass despite what most people say, very entertaining and very cool
2nd book was quite good
3rd book yuh!!! best in the series imo
4th- Very atmospheric
5th- Rubbish, simply nothing happened and it wasnt very good
6 and 7 were average. In fact that last 3 which he wrote towards the end of his career really indicate the fact that he was at the end of his career, in that they were a bit ropey. Still the ending is brilliant and by that I mean the "infuriating" one.

I liked the fifth book. Father Calahan's story was interesting, meeting the people of the calla shed some light on Roland's world, and they revealed that Susannah was pregnant.

I put off reading it for six months. The "infuriating" one, that is. Stephen King said don't read on if you're satisfied, and I was. I wish now that I hadn't read it.

Absolutly loved the series. Read Wastelands when I was 11 and finally got around to reading Dark Tower a few months ago. Dark Tower series was a part of my life for 12 years and I was sad to have finished it. As for the annoying end, I did stop where king told me to but after about a week curiosity made me pick it up again and I was irritated for a while but after some tohught I realised it all fit and Roland having his horn this time gives you a glimmer of hope.

I was kinda hoping for walter.

I love those books. The only thing that sucked is that they took so long for them to come out. I started reading the first book maybe like 15 years ago. I waited so long before the others came out that I read a few at first but figured I would wait until they all came out and then read them all at once. Are they all finished? Some of the best reading ever! The last book I read was the one that I think ended with them on some f****d up train named Blaine.

Heh heh, I named my hamsters Roland and Marten.

They are absolutely my favorite series, own them all in hardback and pocket paperback, own all the audio books, and even a while ago co-founded a Dark Tower RP on here. It was pretty cool. ;)

I got Alain, and I can kinda see that.

Yeah, they're done. I stopped reading them for the same reason. It took too long between books. I'm finally finishing up the series. I'm almost all the way through the last book.

My advice...there are two endings to the last book. Stop at the first ending. Seriously.

I won't be able to. Much as it might suck, I have to find out what's in the second ending.

You are Jake! Even in the weirdest situations you don't panic, and instead, go with the flow. Your innocent nature may be the reason for your amiable ways, or maybe it is because you really don't feel like you have a home anywhere. At heart you are like a kid, and view life as an adventure. Sometimes you can be too trusting, but you are good at making friends.

Jake? How strange.

Anyway, I liked the early volumes but when I got to the point where King wrote himself into the plot as a main character I thought the series had jumped the shark. And I saw the ending coming almost from the beginning of the last book. If you want to read fantasy where the plot works out that way, read ER Eddison's The Worm Ouroboros. It's way shorter.

I agree. Song of Susannah was IMHO the weakest of the series because King wrote himself into it. Seemed too gimicky.

Of the newer ones, I love Wolves of the Calla. I think I read that one in two days. I remember trying to read it in the shower with my arms sticking out of the curtain. My philosophy prof. got kind of annoyed with me until I showed him what I was reading, then he was slightly less vexed.

I still like to go around saying "Man Jesus!" and "thankee sai" every once in a while. ;)

trivia: ever wonder why Stephen King made blaine the train a baddie? A partial explanation- when he was 5 his friend was playing on the tracks at a train station and got knocked down (ie splattered) by a train, King came back smiling to his parents, when asked where his friend had gone, he said he didnt know (obviously in shock).

As for Dt there was a proposed marvel comic adaptation of it coming out.http://www.comixfan.com/xfan/forums/showthread.php?t=36307

There was also a rumour a year ago that there would be a dt 8.

When he introduced himself I thought it was over indulgent, especially where he remarks that he looks like Roland. I like to think of song of susannah as less of a book and more like a link piece between 5 and 7. Imo 5 was just dire, where he lifted the plot of another book and ran with it for 100 pages, the first 100 pages just consisted of

"they walked for miles and miles and miles,

Eddie: oh shit 19, that number is so weird, roland what are we doing,
Roland: I dunno,

they walked for many more miles" etc.

the artwork for 5 is the worst too, none of the character look like the way theyre described in the texts, Roland looks like a dork, Eddie Dean, looks like Flash Gordon, the wolves look lame, best artwork was in 7 and 8 imo.

and the wolves got defeated way too easily. I didnt like how the series took a very abstract/almost nonsensical turn of phrase, I would have liked to know how the old ones got destroyed, I think if he stuck with the ethos of book 3 the series would have turned out much better, but as it stands its pretty damned good.

hehe for ages after reading them I said "thankee-sai" also, maybe I should start doing it again. unrelated, but I also say "yeb'm" and "nome" a lot after reading To Kill a Mockingbird when I was 15 (12 years ago).

It took me 20 years to finish it, but that was Stephen King's fault. It's a great series. I liked the real ending, it was a fitting end to the series.
